John Mitchels and Spa qualify for Division 2 Playoff Final

John Mitchels and Spa have qualified for the final of the Credit Union Senior Football League Division 2 playoff when upsetting the form book to get the better of Rathmore and St Marys respectively this afternoon.

John Mitchels 2-8 Rathmore 0-12
John Mitchels needed extra time to dispose of Rathmore in the Division 2 playoff at Finuge this afternoon. Rathmore got the better start and led by 5 points to 2 at the end of the first quarter but a goal from Alan O’Donoghue saw Mitchels go in at the break on level terms, 1-4 to 0-7. The sides were still level at the three quarter stage and the game went to extra time when they finaished all square after 60 minutes, 1-8 to 0-11. There was no further scoring during the first ten minute but a goal from George Bastable worked the oracle for the Tralee side during the second period.

Spa 1-11 St Marys 1-8
Spa brought the St Marys winning streak to an end at Farranfore today when upsetting the odds to record a deserved three point victory. Indeed it was Spa who inflicted the last competitive defeat on the Cahersiveen side way back in Round 4 of the League last May. Spa got the better start and led by 3 points to 1 after nine minutes but Marys fought back to level 3 points all by the end of the first quarter. A penalty by Kerry minor Michael Foley saw Spa lead by 1-6 to 0-5 at the break. Denis Daly with a goal and a point from Bryan Sheehan had the sides level on the resumption but with Michael O’Donoghue and Dara Moynihan in fine form, Spa added on the winning points.

Spa and John Mitchels will now meet in the final of the promotion playoff next weekend with the winners joining Templenoe and Kenmare in Division 1.

Rathmore, John Mitchels, Spa and St Marys, who all finished on 15 points in Division 2 of the Credit Union Senior football league, will be involved in a four way playoff this weekend to decide the third side to be promoted to Division 1along with champions Templenoe, who will be competing in the premier division for the first time in their history, and Kenmare.

The draw sees John Mitchels play Rathmore and Spa play St Marys and those games are fixed for Sunday at 2pm. Venues to be decided and the final the following week.
