Acorn Life Co. Under 21 Hurling Final
Causeway 2 – 17 Abbeydorney/Ballyheigue 3 - 8

Causeway are the 2015 Acorn Life Co. Under 21 hurling champions following their 2 – 17 to 3 – 8 win over Abbeydorney/Ballyheigue in the final, played at Kilmoyley on Saturday before a large and enthusiastic attendance.

The wind was a major factor in this game, although 2 goals from full forward Tomas Casey in the first 5 minutes for the Abbeydorney/Ballyheigue side gave his side a major boost when facing into it in the first half. Causeway lined out with the assistance of a number of players from Ballyduff (Eoin Ross, Jack and David Goulding, Cathal Kearney and Daniel Kearney) while playing at wing forward was Kerry All-Ireland minor football medalist, Brandon Barrett. On the negative side they were minus Kerry senior hurler and Christy Ring All-Star, Keith Carmody.

That early 2 goal boost proved to be a false dawn for the Abbeydorney/Ballyheigue side as Causeway gradually got to grips with the game and they were aided greatly by the superb scoring rate of corner forward Paul McGrath. Causeway had levelled matters by the 11th minute, 2 – 0 to 0 - 6. Then McGrath got an excellent solo goal on 12 minutes when he gained possession 30 metres out near the side-line and moved closer to goal to rifle a rocket to the net. This left it 1 – 6 to 2 – 1 and a lead for Causeway that they were never to lose. McGrath pounced on a rebound from a great save by goalkeeper Brendan Dunne in the 21st minute for his second goal to increase the Causeway lead. By half time they were 2 – 11 to 2 – 3 to the good.

Abbeydorney/Ballyheigue rallied somewhat in the early stages of the second half with the O’Leary brothers, Paudie Carroll and Philip Lucid leading the charge. Lucid was accurate from frees and play to keep them in touch. He goaled from a placed ball on the 44th minute to leave it 2 – 14 to 3 – 8 as the game entered the last quarter. However Causeway upped it a gear again with Tommy Casey, Jack Goulding and Jason Diggins superb in defence. In the end Causeway had 6 points to spare, an accurate reflection of their dominance throughout.
