St Brendans are Credit Union SHL (2014) Champions

St Brendans 1-24 Ballyduff 1-16

St. Brendan’s senior hurlers are the 2014 Credit Union Kerry Senior Hurling League Division 1 champions after a thrilling 1 – 24 to 1 – 16 win over Ballyduff at Ballyduff on Friday. In fact it was triple joy for the Ardfert side as the game, by agreement of both clubs, also counted for points in the 2015 league and as the semi-final of the 2015 North Kerry Championship.
This was an excellent game, with little between the sides throughout. However, it was the performance of Kerry star, John Egan that was the talk of supporters afterwards. He was majestic all through, was the main difference between the sides and ended up with a personal tally of 1 – 15, all but 5 points of that from play.

Ballyduff opened well and were 3 points up in as many minutes. St. Brendan’s gradually got into the game and were level at 4 points each after 9 minutes and it was score for score for the remainder of the half, after which the sides were level at 10 points each.

Ballyduff were ahead by 13 points to 12 by the 40th minute. Then up stepped Egan for the decisive score of the game, an opportunist goal after Tim Hannafin had done some good work to retain possession initially. That put Ardfert 1 – 12 to 13 points ahead and the lead for the first time. Points from Kevin Orpen and Kevin Skinner stretched the lead to 4 by the 44th minute. Then, Padraig Boyle, who scored 1 – 9 of the Ballyduff total, scored a brilliant solo goal to narrow the deficit to 1 point again with 15 minutes left to play.

St. Brendan’s weathered the storm and gradually wore down the home side, who to their credit never gave up. The winners shot a succession of points in those latter stages, 2 excellent scores from Hannafin, 2 from Egan and 1 each from Kevin Orpen, Fionan Horgan and Brendan O’Connor and opened an eventual gap of 8 points at the finish.
This was easily the best game of club hurling played in the county this season, with full commitment from both sides, excellent conditions and it was well handled by referee, Tom Godley (Kilmoyley).

Tar éis an cluiche, bhronn Gerard McCarthy, Oifigeach Iomána Chiarraí, Corn Nicholas Scollard ar chaptaen Na Breandánaigh, Denis Moriarty. Jack Harrington, on behalf of Chapter 23 of the Irish League of Credit Unions, presented the Man of the Match trophy to the most worthy recipient, John Egan. This was St. Brendan’s first County League win since 1991.
