Kerry were deserving winners as the fitter and sharper Kingdom side were a step ahead of a hard working Down side for all but the first 10 minutes of the game. In fact in the early stages Down made all the running and were ahead by 1 – 3 to 0 – 1 after those opening 10 minutes, the goal finished by Danny Toner when he was set up by Steven Dunne following a long solo run. Kerry regrouped and gradually got into the game and over the next 17 minutes hit 1 – 4 without reply, the points coming from Darren Dineen, Patrick Kelly and 2 from Shane Nolan, punctuated by a Padraig Boyle goal when he caught and finished a long centre to the net. Toner responded with a 27th minute pointed free but Kerry finished the half strongly with 2 long range points from the excellent Kelly and a superb Colm Harty solo goal.

Donal Hughes scored a Down point in the 37th minute to reduce the gap to 5 points at the break, Kerry 2 - 7 Down 1 – 5.

Kerry introduced John O’Neill (Clonoulty-Rossmore) on the re-start for his Kerry debut. James Coyle hit an early Down point but Kerry reeled off 4 further points without reply, from Kelly, Padraig Boyle and 2 Shane Nolan frees. Down responded in the 50th minute with another Coyle point and the 10 minutes following this was their best period of the game. They scored 3 further points but made little overall impression. Kerry were very much in control and with their defence coping very well the scoring continued and they added 4 points to Down’s 1 in the final quarter to end up winners and advance to round 2 on a 2 – 17 to 2 – 10 scoreline.

For Kerry, Michael O’Leary was very impressive, gaining quite an amount of possession while Patrick Kelly hit 4 great points from play from long range. Goalkeeper Stephen Murphy made some great saves and was very assured while Padraig Boyle and Darren Dineen had first class outings.

For Down, Danny Toner played outstandingly and always threatened while Conor Cassidy, James Coyle and Michael Hughes also stood out.
