St. Mary's Caherciveen 2-13              Waterville  1-9

Playing conditions were excellent in Con Keating Park, Cahirciveen last Sunday for the meeting between St Mary's and neighbours Waterville in Round 2 of the Intermediate Championship. It was a highly anticipated game but both sides had injury concerns. St Mary's cornerback Killian Nolan suffered a training ground injury and Waterville were without the services of Gearoid O'Sullivan and Fionan Clifford. Five minutes into the game, Stephen O'Dwyer and Barry O'Dwyer put Waterville on the board with a free and a point respectively but Pauly O'Donoghue quickly responded with a point of his own. Centre forward Stephen O'Dwyer put Waterville 2 points ahead with another free but Bryan Sheehan drew the sides level with a point and a free in quick succession. Sean Cournane and Niall O'Driscoll were quick to add further to the scoring for St. Mary's and they both notched a point from play. There was no reply from Waterville until the 23rd minute when Barry O'Dwyer scored a goal to take the lead by a point. However two minutes later, after a great display of teamwork, the ball found itself in the hands of Sean Cournane who found the top corner of the net, giving Ciaran Dennehy no chance to save it. Alan O'Shea put over a free for Waterville, leaving the half time score 1-5 to 1-4 in St Mary's favour.

Alan O'Shea started the 2nd half off with another point but Dan O'Sullivan kept the Mary's a point ahead two minutes later. The home side took full advantage and with a point from Bryan Sheehan, and a second goal from Sean Cournane as well as two more points from the corner forward, St Mary's widened the gap. The next five minutes saw two further points for each side, thanks to Seamus O'Sullivan, Bryan Sheehan and Dan Daly but the last ten minutes proved futile for Waterville. A point from Greg Gibson and a free from Stephen O'Dwyer were replied to with a point each from Sheehan and Cournane but the full time whistle left it 2-13 to 1-9 to the boys in blue.

There was a good demonstration of teamwork by the home side but were best served by Ian Casey, Dan O'Sullivan, Bryan Sheehan, Denis Daly, Pauly O'Donoghue and Sean Cournane. Best for Waterville were Barry O'Dwyer, Alan O'Shea and Cormac O'Sullivan.
