Listry are Novice Club Champions 2014 2014-11-16 20:04:00

Castleisland Mart Novice Championship Final
Listry 0-15    Lispole 1-11

Listry are County Novice Champions for the first time following a narrow one point victory over a gallant Lispole side before a big attendance in Milltown today. Listry had to do it the hard way coming from six points down after just six minutes to dominate the game for long periods thereafter but they had to withstand a grandstand finish from the West Kerry men before they finally prevailed with a point deep into injury time.
Lispole got the best possible start with a goal by midfielder Garret Noonan after just two minutes of play and two fine Declan O’Sullivan points and a pointed free from Noonan had them 1-3 to no score ahead after just six minutes on the clock. Gradually however Listry got into the game and once Jimmy O’Leary and particularly Paul Kennedy found their feet in midfield, they threatened to overrun the West Kerrymen. The points began to flow as Listry cut through the Lispole defence with Ronan Buckley leading the onslaught with two, the second of which just screamed over James Dempsey’s crossbar. Garret Noonan replied with a point but back came Listry to force a fine save from Dempsey when Buckley was in on goal. Buckley pointed the resultant “45” in the 15th minute and that was the first of 7 unanswered points by the winners before the interval with Gary O’Sullivan helping himself to three of those. At the break it was 0-9 to 1-4 for Listry.
John Foley increased that lead on the resumption but Lispole fought back well with a brace of points from Donnacha Higgins and Declan O’Sullivan to leave the minimum between the sides. Gary O’Sullivan – afterwards named the Castleisland Mart Man of the Match – and Garret Noonan exchanged points at the end of the third quarter but then Listry struck for home with a point from Impressive sub Sean Lehane and two more from John Foley and Gary O’Sullivan and indeed James Dempsey had to make a great save to deny Joe Clifford in the 48th minute at which stage a goal would certainly have wrapped it up. Listry were then reduced to 14 men and taking heart from this Lispole began a fightback that yielded points from Garret Noonan, Adrian Rayel whose shot was just over the bar, and Colm Hurley before Declan O’Sullivan sent over a tremendous equaliser under pressure in the 60th minute. However, just when it looked as if a replay would be needed, Derry Aherne kept his cool to slot over a 30 yards free in the 62nd minute to claim victory for Listry.
After the game the Hickey- Quirke Cup was presented to winning Captain Jimmy O’Leary by County PRO John O’Leary and the Castleisland Mart Man of the Match was presented to Listry’s Gary O’Sullivan by Jimmy Roche of Castleisland Mart.
