Brosna are Junior Club Champions 2014 2014-11-15 19:39:00

Castleisland Mart Junior Championship Final
Brosna 0-8 Dromid Pearses 0-7

Brosna were crowned Castleisland Mart Junior Champions at Fitzgerald Stadium yesterday following a narrow one point victory over Dromid Pearses. The game was very tight throughout with defences on top for the most part and it was evident very early on that scores were going to be difficult to come-by. The North Kerry side were victorious mainly due to the fact that their forwards as a unit carried more of a scoring threat though it must be said that the absence through injury of county star Declan O’Sullivan was a huge blow to the south Kerry side. O’Sullivan did come into the fray for the final 18 minutes but he operated too far from the Brosna goal to pose any type of a threat.
Gearoid J O’Sullivan for Dromid and Tom McGoldrick for the winners swapped early points but Brosna then passed up a goal chance when Peter Curtin lost possession at the vital moment. Chris Farley, by far the best of the Dromid front six, had two points to put his side 3 to 1 up by the 20th minute but Timmy Finnegan and Tom McGoldrick soon had the sides on level terms and after Farley again had a fine score for Dromid, McGoldrick equalised on the stroke of half time to leave the sides deadlocked, 0-4 each, at the break.
Brosna had the best of the play during the third quarter and Tom McGoldrick had them in front for the first time when he pointed a free in the 33rd minute. Flor McCarthy, afterwards named man of the match, came forward from half back to increase Brosna’s lead four minutes later but for all their play, that two point lead was scant reward for their efforts. Chris Farley from a free and Thomas Curran had the sides level once again by the 46th minute as Dromid upped the tempo with the introduction of Declan O’Sullivan but they were over reliant on Farley up front who continued to be their only threat. Padraig O’Sullivan, who was at the end of a good Dromid move in the 48th minute punched wide when attempting to pass when a goal looked on and thereafter Dromid quickly ran out of ideas. Brosna broke away a minute later for Mike Finnegan to point his side ahead and when Tom McGoldrick pointed a free seven minutes from time Brosna were two points to the good. Dromid kept pressing but a point from Aidan O’Connor four minutes from time was all they could muster and Brosna held on for a win that they just about deserved.
After the game, Patrick O’Sullivan, chairman of the county committee, presented the Con Brosnan Cup to winning captain Don McAuliffe.

Brosna will now meet Millstreet of Cork in the Munster Junior Club Championship semi final at a Kerry venue yet to be named on next weekend. Kill of Waterford and Glin of Limerick are in the other side of the draw.
Brosna: Tom McGoldrick 0-5 (4Fr), Mike Finnegan, Timmy Finnegan and Flor McAuliffe 0-1 each.
Dromid Pearses: Chris Farley 0-4 (2Fr), Aidan O’Connor, Thomas Curran and and Gearoid J. O’Sullivan 0-1 each.
