Ardfert are Intermediate Club Champions 2014 2014-10-19 19:51:00

Castleisland Mart Intermediate Club Championship Final
Ardfert 1-12    Spa 0-10
Ardfert were crowned Castleisland Mart Intermediate champions at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday evening following an extra time victory over a Spa who had shaped like winners for much of the first half. Indeed were it not for some heroic goalkeeping by Nicky O’Sullivan in the Ardfert goal, then the winners could easily have found themselves three or four goals in arrears at the break as Spa passed up a number of gilt edged goal scoring chances in that opening period. As it was, the St Brendans Board side were just three in arrears and though they may have considered themselves a little unlucky not to have won the game when wind assisted in the second period, they proved their worth in the extra time.
Spa were quickly into their stride from the throw in and were 3 points to 1 to the good after 10 minutes with Kerry Minor Liam Kearney prominent at midfield. John Dowling for the winners and Craig Hickey swapped points before Ryan Carroll, after a great run, was narrowly wide with a great goal chance in the 13th minute. Kearney pointed a great sideline kick but David Griffin responded with a fine effort from a 45 yards free and after both pointed again  in quick succession (Griffin’s effort was Ardfert’s first from play in the 22nd minute) Kearney hit the butt of the post from close range and Michael Finnegan brought a great save from Nicky O’Sullivan at the death with Andrew Garnett pointing the resultant “45” to leave Spa leading 7 points to 4 at the break.
John Egan and David Griffin reduced the deficit on the resumptionand after sub Michael O’Donoghue pointed with his first touch for Spa, two Egan frees left the sides on level terms at the three quarter stage. There were just two points in the remaining quarter with Kearney pointing a free for Spa and Mike Moloney levelling matters in the 49th minute before scoring dried up. James Devane in the Spa goal ensured extra time for his isde with a fine save from a punched effort from Mairtín Ferris in the final seconds to leave the score 0-9 each at the end of normal time.
A point from a John Dowling free for Ardfert was the only score in the first additional period as Spa failed to capitalise on the wind advantage and the winners outscored their rivals by 1-2 to no score in the second period with the goal coming from a breakaway by David Griffin, agterwards named as the Man of the Match.
Ardfert: David Griffin 1-3 (2 Fr), John Egan 0-4 (Fr), John Dowling (Frees) and Shane Griffin 0-2 each, Mike Moloney 0-1.
Spa: Liam Kearney 0-5 (Frees), Andrew Garnett 0-2 (Frees), Craig Hickey, Michael O’Donoghue and Eoin Cronin 0-1 each.
