Valentia Young Islanders 0-12 Asdee 1-08

Playing in their home venue of O'Connor Park in Valentia in blustery conditions on Saturday night, the Valentia Young Islanders footballers recorded their first Co. League win of the season, by defeating Asdee on a score of 0-12 to 1-08 in the Co. League Div. 5.

The islanders, defending the village end goal and playing against the strong wind, started well with the first two points coming from corner forward Paul O'Connor and midfielder Brendan O'Sullivan adding another point to put them three nil in front. However, the Asdee full forward Eoin Kennedy opened their account, with a point in the thirteenth minute, which was added to by a further point by their number 13, Mike Breen, to leave the scores at three points to two. Valentia's Andy Quigley pointed to open a gap of four points to two, but a free each from Mike Breen and Eoin Kennedy saw the teams go in level at half time on four points each.

The islanders commenced the second half,aided by the strong wind, and also had John Daly introduced as a wing back, instead of Aaron Quigley. Their corner back,Ger O'Shea, made an early fine timely block on an effort for goal by the Asdee number 10, Darragh Keane, but Keane soon added a point to put the Shannonsiders ahead by five points to four. The islanders, now playing with the strong wind, drove on and with their centre half back and man of the match, John Curran, driving through the middle and being involved in the making of scores on numerous occasions, they established a lead of ten points to six. The Valentia midfielder, Ger 'The Plumber' was also showing to the good. The points came from Andy Quigley, Brendan O'Sullivan with two, one a free, Mikey Moriarty, Paul O'Sullivan and Paul O'Connnor with Asdee's point coming from an Eoin Kennedy free. Asdee's Mike Breen and Andy Quigley exchanged pointed frees, to leave the score at eleven points to seven. Midway through the half, Asdee's midfielder, John Doran, was red carded for a striking action on a Valentia player.

Mikey Moriarty made a second half appearance for Shane O'Connor. Mikey went to wing forward , Junior Murphy went from there to wing back and John Daly went into the fullback line instead of Shane O'Connor. With about seven minutes left, the islanders were comfortable with the aforementioned lead of eleven points to seven, when Asdee's Noel Long goaled for them, to leave just a point between the sides. The Valentia substitute, Brian Falvey for Mark Lynch, steadied the ship with a point with the final score coming from Asdee's Charlie Dalton at full forward, to leave the islanders gaining their first Co. League points of the season on a final score line of 0-12 to 1-08.

With regard to the Valentia defense, Colm Casey acquitted himself well at full back, as did Ger O'Shea in the corner. John Lynch at wing back was prominent, particularly in the first half, and John Curran as stated gave a man of the match performance at centre half back.
Full back Martin Collins had a fine game for Asdee, ably assisted by corner back Eoin Carroll. Padraig Ruddle was industrious at midfield, with Darragh Keane at number ten for Asdee prominent among his aforementioned forward colleagues.
