Keanes Supervalu Killorglin MFL Final 3B 2014-05-09 09:21:00

Division 3B Final
Laune Rangers 3-10 Annascaul/Lispole 0-10
That old adage that “goals win games” was proved once again at Milltown on Friday night where Laune Rangers defeated Annascaul/Lispole to win the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Minor League Division 3B final in very trying conditions. The winners had the greater scoring threat upfront throughout and in John Tyther (afterwards named the Man of the Match) and Daniel McBeth they had two strong men who made light of the heavy downpour that fell throughout. The West Kerry side, who started without the injured Darragh Brosnan, were over dependant on Kerry Minor Brian Rayel up front, and while he did win a lot of possession, very often he was too far from the Laune Rangers goal to threaten an excellent defensive unit.

The losers had the better start but had three wides to their discredit before Brian Rayel pointed them into a two points lead with two pointed frees. Ominously, Rangers scored with their first real attack, a point courtesy of Daniel McBeth, before John Tyther extended their lead when he goaled from the penalty spot after a foul on Manus Gallagher. Worse was to follow for the Westerners when Eoin O’Sullivan’s long delivery deceived the Annascaul/Lispole defence and Aidan O’Sullivan finished to the net in the 13th minute. Brian Rayel and Jack O’Connor responded with points for the losers but Patrick Daly restored the Rangers’ five points lead with two pointed frees before the break to leave his side leading by 2-3 to 0-4 at the short whistle.

Rayel moved to full forward for the losers on the resumption but they continued to rake up the wides – they finished with 13 in all - and though they kicked some good scores during the third quarter, especially from Alan Falvey and Fionn Coakley, that five points margin still separated the sides at the three-quarter stage (2-6 to 0-7). Annascaul/Lispole needed a goal but when the goal came a minute later, it came at the other end when David Costello finished off a great run by John Tyther. Try as they might thereafter, and despite an abundance of possession, Annascaul/Lispole could make no inroads into a tightly marshalled Laune Rangers defence and the Killorglin side ran out deserving winners on a 3-10 to 0-10 scoreline.

After the game, the Division 3B shield was presented to Laune Rangers captain, David Costelloe, by County Committee PRO John O’Leary and Peter Keane of Keanes Supervalu Killorglin presented the Man of the Match to Laune Rangers centre back John Tyther.
