Maurice Fitzgerald ratified as new Kerry Selector

Former 2 time All Ireland Football winner Maurice Fitzgerald has joined  Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s management team as a selector in place of Diarmuid Murphy who stepped down earlier this year after six years in the position. The St Marys Cahersiveen Clubman was ratified at Monday night’s meeting of the Kerry County Committee in the IT Tralee.

Eamonn Fitzmaurice welcomed the appointment of his former teammate to the management team; “I am delighted to welcome Maurice into the Kerry senior football setup. His football knowledge, work ethic and personality will be a huge asset to us”.

Fitzgerald will join Trainer/Selector: Padraig Corcoran (Dingle) and selectors Mikey Sheehy (Austin Stacks) and Liam Hassett (Laune Rangers) as part of the backroom team.

Maurice Fitzgerald Factfile

Maurice Fitzgerald played Minor for Kerry in 1986 and 1987 and followed that as an Under 21 between 1988 and 1990 picking up an All Ireland medal in his final year in the grade with victory over Tyrone in the final. He made his Senior debut against Waterford in 1988 and his tremendous display against Cork in that year’s Munster final when scoring 10 points, though on the losing side, earned him an All Star in his very first year at senior level. Those were lean times for Kerry however but Fitzgerald won his second All Star in 1996 and followed that with The Texaco and All Stars Footballer of the Year in 1997 when his 9 points in the final against Mayo secured Kerry’s first All Ireland title since 1986 and a third All Star for the St Marys man. The Millenium Year 2000, will also be remembered for some Fitzgerald heroics particularly the drawn semi final with Armagh when Fitzgerald rescued Kerry with a goal and then equalised from a long range free to send the game to a replay. Later that year he collected his second All Ireland Medal against Galway in the replayed final. He retired from the intercounty scene in 2001 following Kerry’s defeat to Meath in the semi final.

Fitzgerald won 3 County Championship medals with South Kerry between 2004 and 2006 and most recently was manager of the St Mary’s team that won the Kerry Intermediate title last year and capped that by adding the All Ireland title to that win earlier this year.
