Kerry GAA Gala Celebration will be a night to remember

Saturday night promises to be the highlight of the GAA social scene for many a year and a night to remember when Kerry’s seven All Ireland senior football winning sides from 1997 to 2014 will be honoured at Killarney’s INEC at a function jointly hosted by Kerry County Board and their ever present sponsors, Kerry Group. Needless to say, many comparisons will be made between these heroes and those from other successful eras, particularly the 1975 to 1986 team whose deeds are there for all to be seen in that wonderful video/CD that covered their heroic deeds from 1975 right up to their demise in 1987. Suffice to say that the latest successful era produced its own heroes many of whom would stand tall with any of their predecessors. One has only to think of the likes of Maurice Fitzgerald, Seamus Moynihan, the three Ó Sé’s Declan O’Sullivan and Colm Cooper, to name but a few, and you get an idea of how privileged we have been. The achievements of many of these players have been recognised nationally with 68 All Stars and 7 Footballer of the Year awards coming to the Kingdom in the thirty year period from 1987 to 2016.  Now however, there is an ideal opportunity to honour all of the players in the various squads and in all, 87 players will be honoured as will the 25 members of the various successful management teams.

The celebration will also feature the launch of a specially commissioned DVD featuring the great players and personalities from this era, their stories and highlights from those wonderful games. This DVD, “Kerry’s Magnificent 7” which will pick up from where the Golden Years Video left off will cover the period 1988 to 2016 and is sure to be a popular best seller. The DVD will be on sale in time for the Christmas market. A 40 page souvenir booklet is also being published for the occasion and a limited supply of this booklet will be on sale to the general public next week.

All proceeds from the night will go towards the development of the Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence at Currans and the high performance unit at Tralee IT. Along with the grant funding received  from Croke Park and the Munster Council as well as a very generous donation from major sponsors Kerry Group, Kerry GAA, under the shrewd stewardship of county chairman Patrick O’Sullivan, undertook a major ground breaking fundraising drive in the USA  over the last couple of years. The funds raised have ensured that the clubs of the county, many of whom are already under financial strain, will not have to carry the burden of financing this major capital development project. Development in Currans is well underway and the favourable weather over the past few weeks has greatly helped to ensure that the roof of the complex will be in place ahead of harsher climes in the coming months. The complex is well on course to be operational in late spring at which stage attention will turn to the development of the high performance unit in Tralee IT which is projected to be operational in 2018.
