Munster Junior Football Championship Final
Kerry 0-14 Cork 0-13
By Murt Murphy

Kerry upset the odds when they defeated Cork in this exciting Munster Junior Football Final, played at the Austin Stack Park Tralee thus completing three in a row at this grade.
Kerry who are reigning All-Ireland champions had to field a completely new squad while Cork had the bulk of last year’s team beaten by Kerry but, despite a gusty second half fight back, Cork were unable to pierce the champions defence.

Kerry dominated the opening half despite playing against the wind, with Adrian Spillane the dominant figure at midfield while Jason Foley served notice that he may well be a future senior full-back. The winners raced 0-6 to 0-3 in front by the end of the opening quarter, thanks to Paul O’Donoghue ( 2), and one each from Patrick Clifford, Adrian Spillane, Niall O’Shea and Kieran Hurley while Cork’s outstanding wing forward Michael Vaughan kicked two from play and Mark Sugrue added a free. O’Donoghue from the same club as Bryan Sheehan was unerring from placed balls and with Spillane running at the Cork defence in a tour de force display and Kerry led 0-10 to 0-6 at the interval.

Cork did rally in the second half with Killian O’Hanlon pulling the strings around the middle and three superb points from Vaughan plus two more from Eoghan Buckley closed the gap to two points with three minutes left. But Foley, Cathal Ó Lúing, Brian Ó Seanachain, Spillane and captain, Paul O’Donoghue, kept Kerry in front and it was fitting that it was O’Donoghue that nailed the ’45 which was the difference between the sides at the end.
Kerry go in search of another All-Ireland final appearance (their 4th in 4 years) when they face Warwickshire on July 23rd.
