Kerry win the Todd Nolan Tournament

Kerry won the Todd Nolan Munster Development Tournament that was held in Abbeydorney GAA grounds under brilliant sunshine on Saturday last when Kerry welcomed Tipperary and Cork Development Squads.

Kerry accounted for Tipperary on score line of 2-12 to 2-10 and Cork defeated Tipperary in the second game on scoreline of 3-18 to 2-17. Kerry and Cork went head to head in the final and Kerry set the tone from the start with early points from Shane Conway. Midway through the half with some great defending by fullback and captain of the side Lixnaw’s Liam Mullins, Conor O’Keffe sent a long clearance to fellow clubman Shane Conway who took on the Cork back line to give a perfect pass to Causeway’s Gary Carey who finished to the net to leave the score; Kerry 1-11 to Cork’s 0-2 at half time. Kerry enjoyed the support of a stiff breeze in that opening half with great performances from centre fielder Niall O’Mahony and the brilliant Barry O’Mahony.

Cork, with the help of the breeze, found it hard to close the half time Kingdom lead but came more into the game with three long range points and midway through the half Cork were awarded a penalty which was well struck to bring Cork to 1-5 to Kerry’s 1-11. From the puck out Kerry got more involved in the game with some great stick work from Conor O’Keffe at half back and Barry O’Mahony operating at centre half foward setting up some scores for Shane Conway. With ten minutes remaining Conway set up another great run at the Cork backs to release another perfect pass to the corner forward Gary Carey who finished to the Cork net for his second goal. Kerry tacked on two more points and with time running out a goalmouth scramble resulted in a Cork goal to leave the final score Kerry 2-17 Cork 2-7.

Kerry last won this competition in 2010 and after the game, Carmel Nolan, wife of the late Todd Nolan, presented the Todd Nolan Cup to Kerry captain Liam Mullins and Shane Nolan presented the Man of the Match award to Barry O’Mahony.

Referees on the day were Tom Godley (Kilmoyley) and Ian Liston (Lixnaw).
Abbeydorney pitch was in great condition and thanks to the club for hosting the competition and to everyone who helped on the day.
