Coming soon after the hard-fought and successful
campaign of 2000, Kerry began their league campaign in not unexpected
fashion – suffering losses in the opening rounds to Louth, Tyrone, Offaly and
Roscommon. The first victories of the year came in April when Kerry defeated
Dublin and Donegal by 5 points. In the final round of the league on April 15th
Kerry lost to Galway by 6 points. Kerry’s four points were not enough to save
them from relegation and they face Div. 2 in 2002. The Championship got under-way on May 13th when
Kerry, as defending champions, traveled to Clonmel and easily defeated
Tipp. In the semi-final against Limerick a great performance by Mike F.
Russell secured victory and set-up a classic Munster Final encounter with
Cork on the 15th July. Pairc Ui Chaoimh was the venue and a
determined Kerry showed their superiority and captured the Munster title
for the fifth time in six years, defeating the rebels by 0-19 to 1-13. The new qualifier format saw Kerry drawn against Dublin in
the All-Ireland quarter-final, and this pairing proved to be the
highlight of the year with the teams serving up two thrillers in Thurles. In
the first match, Dublin had scored two late goals and lead by a point when,
in a moment not to be forgotten, Maurice Fitzgerald stepped up to a sideline
ball and scored a wonder-point to force a replay. In the second game, on
August 11th, two superb goals from John Crowley, some terrible
Dublin misses and strong defending from Seamus Moynihan saw Kerry overcome
the Dubs on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-12. (Seamus’ shouldering of Murphy over
the sideline is another cherished memory!) And then came the semi-final against Meath. Croke
Park, September 2nd - seen by many as the game of the year and
eagerly awaited by all, I doubt anyone had foreseen the eventual outcome. On
a day when nothing went right for Kerry, and Meath played their best football
all year, the royals dethroned the champions in unbelievable fashion,
outscoring the Kingdom 1-8 to 0-1 in the 2nd half to claim a
fifteen point victory. For a team who had been training
every month since October 1999, a ‘bad day at the office’ had to come
eventually. A tough defeat to take, but the team played some great football
during the year, retained the Munster title and will have learned a few
things along the way. Rest, regroup and rise again in 2002! |

The Senior Hurling Team had a very successful year under
trainer Maurice Leahy and selectors Anthony O’Carroll and Eugene O’Sullivan.
An excellent League campaign led to a NHL Div. 2 Final against Westmeath,
which Kerry won by 7 points. This victory was all the more sweeter as
Westmeath were the only team who had defeated Kerry during the league. Kerry began their Intermediate Championship campaign
in July, when they defeated Roscommon in the quarter-final. This led to a
semi-final meeting against Carlow on the 28th July. The game ended
all-square and the replay was fixed for Thurles on Aug 11th. Once
again the teams were level after normal time and with no option of
extra-time, a second replay was fixed. The fixture was finally resolved on
August 25th, when a late comeback by Carlow gave them a single
point victory. Two losses in fourteen games and a National League title
along the way sums up a good year for the Hurlers. A young talented team
who can only get stronger. Positive signs for 2002! |
