Comments: Congratulations to the worthy Dingle team on their excellent performance against the Gaeltacht in the West Kerry Final on Sunday last at Lisople. Super sub John Dowd saved the day for Dingle as the Gaeltacht made a mighty come back in the closing minutes. The Gaeltacht put up a hard fight with superb play by Tomas O'Sé and Roibeard Mac Gearailt. But Dingle were too strong for the lads back West. They stayed on top of their game all the way through. Man of the match Fenton Ashe, along with the Dowd and Geaney brothers played well. They sure played well in the Hillgrove Sunday night!!! Hard luck to the Gaeltacht lads. D'imir sibh go dial ach ní raibh an t-adh libh.

Time: 1999-11-17 19:06:58
Comments: A View from the Stand On October 24, in Gaelic Park, the New York Kerry team won the championship after a long lapse of 32 years. They were captained by the lion-hearted Paddy O'Conner (Cloghane) and backboned by the 3 Driscolls of Camp. It was a heartwarming display of pride and passion of Kerry football at it's best. They beat an All-star Donegal team made up by players from several counties and were assisted by Phillip Clifford and Nicholas Murphy from Cork and Anthony Rainbow of Kildare. Kerry had the rock solid Robbie Dowd in goal and his prodigious kick outs were a great relief to Kerry. A fullback line of Riney Gallivan and Dillon stayed with the task of marking 3 county players and never gave an inch for the full 70 minutes. The half back line of 2 Driscolls and captain Paddy O'Conner played their usual storming game and for sheer athletic ability and football craft would be hard to be equaled anywhere. They kept pushing forward and put tremendous pressure on the Donegal backs. Midfield more than held their own with John McGlynn. A workaholic and his strength on the ball were a tremendous asset for the full 70. An astute move by manager Pat Kearney placing Louis Holland at midfield worked to perfection. His size and bulk were invaluable. Mike Carmody took his scores with confidence and conviction, and in John Sexton at #11, Kerry had a battering ram that could not be moved with a derrick. What can you say about that man Bingo Driscoll to explain his worth to the team? He was here, there, and everywhere, all over the field, even back in defense towards the end when he could see the light at the end of the tunnel. He took his scores well, especiallly at crucial times during the game. Dave Mccarthy could play in any company and would not be found wanting. His strength and scores came at vital times. Willie O'Donnell in a roving role was immaculate and in full flight is like a streaking greyhound and his scores were classy. Dessie Farrell fitted in perfectly and looked like he played with them all his life. Paudie Mullvihill came on and played the role of super sub all year and started several games. Other players who made a huge contribution during the year: Naill Sugrug, John Fogarty, Adrian P. Riney, Ciaran Cull, and Timm Foley. Visiting players from Ireland during the year who often made great sacrifices dashing to and from airports and jobs were: Denis O'Dywer, Dara O'Cinneide, Ken Leen, John Crowle, Seamus Moynihan, and Seamus Harkin. Kerrry took an early lead and were ahead by 8 points to 3 at half time. But early in the second half, Donegal drew level, but Kerry as is their history, and like many a Kerry teams before them, when the honor of the green and gold was at stake, rose magnificiently to the occasion and won on the score of 0-13 to 0-10. A Kerry team that played in Division 2 this year and rose from the ashes to reach the promised land. The odds of this happening at the start of the year would have to be in the hundreds as they improved with every game. The back room team led by Pat Kearney did their homework well and made the right moves at the right time all year. When New York pick their manager for the team to play Galway next year, he is the only one that should be considered. His aides were John Riordan, John Hayes, Jim O'Donnell, and Gerry Bambury. The team: Robbie Dowd, John Mitchells, and Peter Riney(Sneem); Paul Galvin(Waterville); Paul Dillon(Meath and Duagh); Paddy O'Conner-Captain(Cloghane); Johnie Driscoll(Camp); Kieran Driscoll (Camp); J. McGlynn 0-1(Curragh); Louis Holland(Bantry); Mike Carmody 0-3(Tarbert); John Sexton(Limerick); Bingo Driscoll 0-2(Camp); Dave McCarthy 0-2(Kiilcummin); Dessie Farrel 0-3(Dublin); Willie O'Donnell 0-2(Duagh). During and after the game, the scenes from the stand were unbelievable. The Kerry flags and banners were waving proudly once again and it was a revelation to see all the young Kerry supporters wearing the colors and cheering the team. It is 30 years since we had that kind of atmosphere at Gaelic Park. You can not beat young people for enthusiasum. Kerry and the GAA are back with a bang in New York. All credit to Donegal, who played it hard but fair and were the first to congratulate Kerry. They have been piped at the post a couple of times in the last few years but their day will come. If a few of the Kerry old timers were teary eyed at the end it was understandable, but smiles as wide as the gap of Dungloe on the faces of them was easy to understand. Among that crowd were: Sean Healy, Sean O'Shea, Steve Sullivan, Tim Keating, Timmy Curtin, Jim Mackessy, Pat Hennessey, Tom O'Carroll, Kevin Hoare, Mike Halpin, Johnie Lynch, Dick Galvin, Tom Murnane, Tommy Murphy, and Danny Twomey. LONG LIVE KERRY FOOTBALL.

Comments: After watching the huling final the last day between Crotta and Lixnaw, I must say I ws a bit surprised to see 15 subs named when in the county minor final stacks with a panal of 35 plyers were only allowed to name 24 players. I feel it was very unfair on the 11 players who were left off the program as they had trained as hard as eveeryone else and fully diserved to have that program as a memory of the match and something to show their kids and grandchildren in the future. By the way Eoin you really have a good site and it was recommended to me by two Stacks players Brian Phelan nad Mike Finn. They both told me how good a site it was and requested that I leave with these words GO ON THE STACKS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bye for now.

Comments: Austin Stacks will be back next season we were very unlucky this year but I feel with a new brand of youth emerging into the senior team it is only a matter of time before Austin Stacks will retain their rightful place as kingpins of Kerry football. I suppose I should talk about the Minor county final well to be honest it is a fair judgement to say that we were robbed but in fairness we really should not dwell on the matter, South Kerry are a good team and so the blow was in some way softened by us losing to an amalgamated team of ten teams. Although now we have our sights set on the county league and the town championship, after winning the town league quite easily over Ballymac although I must complain that it really is not fair that a team is not allowed to play it's full team because of the quality of opposition. Dara Long, Dave Varley and I should have been allowed to play and it is a disgrace that we were not allowed to do so. But anyway enough said on that issue, I must go now and read your report on the county final. So until next time, stay true to the game!!!!!! Oh yea and don't forget Stacks will be back and Rock Street will be the street of champions once again and justifibly so!!!!!!!!! This is Mike Finn signing off

Comments: Its no wonder Kerry football is going no where!!! I have often seen a man by the name of Liam Purtill in action for Ballylongford and i must say he is one finest footballers of the modern game. Yet the Kerry senior selectors seem to think otherwise. It is patently obvious that he is the 2nd best forward in Kerry (Maurice been no.1 on his day), a forward that will score at will when on his game. He has the skill and dash of a John Egan and the accuracy of a Mikey Sheehy. As a Corkman all I can say is lony may ye keep ignoring this footballing genius.
