PRIDE IN THE GREEN AND GOLD
Dúchas
You say tradition counts for naught when two teams take the field,
I fear you are mistaken, lad, but the years will make you yield,
And when your hair's as grey as mine, and time has made you old,
Then you'll invoke the truth I spoke of the Kingdom's green and gold.
You cannot box or bottle it, nor grasp it in your hand,
But pride of race and love of place inspire a love of land
Time honoured is our birthright, we'll never break the mould,
It's deep within the soul of us, who wear the green and gold.
Grey lakes and mountains soaring high, Mount Brandon's holy
hill,
The little church at Gallerus, our language living still,
The Skellig Rock, stout football stock, they can't be bought or sold,
For our county's fame, we play the game in the Kingdom's green and gold.
And when the battle's fiercest and the fortunes ebb and flow,
We're still alive, we can survive, we never will let go,
For the spirit of our fathers and of stories yet untold,
Will lead us on to victory, in the Kingdom's green and gold.
We savour Kerry victories, we salute a gallant foe
And when we lose, there's no excuse, we pick up our bags and go,
So raise your glass each lad and lass to our warriors brave and bold,
Who again aspire to the Sam Maguire in the Kingdom's green and gold.

The Pre-match
buildup:
" My Friends, We are fast approaching one of THE MIGHTY KINGDOMS biggest days out in two years. Not since that
glorious afternoon on 28th September 1997 have the green and gold ribbons of
our native Kerry been fixed to the arms of our good friend Sam Maguire.
I plea to you, my fellow county
man, to relax for the days and nights before. Don't over indulge unnecessarily
in ceremonious activities which could adversely affect YOUR performance
on Kerry's big day. YOUR voice, YOUR colours, Your expert advice
in the pre and post match analysis is required by YOUR county, by YOUR KINGDOM.
Worry not about accommodation, as
the capital is willing to cater for one and all Kerry supporters on this weekend. We may not sleep, but
sleeping merely makes us dream, and as chosen Kerry
people we need not dream, as victory is always a reality.
In the aftermath WE WILL
over indulge. WE WILL paint the town red (and not in memory of yet
another faltering year in the annals of Cork GAA history!!!). WE WILL
celebrate another wondrous performance by OUR HEROES in green and gold.... Be there my friend, your comrades and your
county needs you. "
"
Answer the call. Ask not what your county can do for you. Ciarrai go brach.
"

MATCH
REPORT:
All-Ireland Final
2000 - by Colleen Nelligan
For a game
that began with a Munster woman doing a lap of honour around Croke Park it seems
apt that it ended with a Munster team doing a lap of honour with the Sam. Kerry
emerged victorious after a 71 minute battle for supremacy, last Saturday, which
ended 0-17 (Kerry), 1-10 (Galway).
It wasn't
the disjointed game of the 24th, that was replayed on the hallowed turf of
Croke Park amidst the chants and jeers of the 64,000 strong crowd, rather a
close, man-marked, point-for-point contest, that the pundits had predicted
preceding the first game. The first half was a paradox of brilliant football
and wide shooting. Declan Meehan broke through Kerry's defense, in the 6th
minute, to score one of the best goals of the championship generating
thunderous appreciation from the maroon and white army who packed the grounds
to see their hero's play. Kerry supporters bowed their heads, at such a display
of shooting accuracy from a centre half back! Galway's startling one point lead
boded ominous for Sam's return to his beloved county. Kerry rallied and began
to pick their points amidst a shower of wides. The most definitive injury of
the half was that of Kevin Walsh (Galway midfield) who had to be replaced by
Joe Bergin, the much lauded 19 year old, Bergin didn't exert major influence in
the middle of the field and this led to Kerry's domination of this area
especially after Maurice Fitzgearld replaced Noel Kennelly in the 27th minute
and played as a third midfielder. As
the team broke for half-time the score was 1-4 (Galway) to 0-9 (Kerry) with a
pitiful 8 wides for Kerry, 7 for Galway.
A light
drizzle heralded in the new half. Maurice Fitzgearld settled into his position
with the professional role familiar to all from the '97 championship. Kevin
Walsh was re-introduced for mid-fielder Sean O Domhnaill to combat Fitzgearld's
influence but he never played as dominant a part in the game as he had prior to
his earlier injury. The deteriorating pitch surface took its toll as players
began to slip and slide along the Cusack sideline but with minutes left to play
Kerry had opened their lead to 2 points. At the final whistle there was an
exhalation of delight and frustration. The cup wad lifted amongst shouts of
approval and the scurrying haste of Galway exiting the grounds. The maroon sea
filtered out as the jubilant crowd began their celebrations and saluted their
tear streaked heroes of the championship.
A clearly relieved Mikey Sheehy (former Kerry
player) commented, "It's very appropriate that Kerry are bringing home the
1st cup of the Millennium. It was a great team performance… They all played
with great heart." Jack O' Shea mirrored that view, "Kerry played
exceptionally well. Galway had a very good start but I was always happy with
the way Kerry was going." He chose Maurice Fitzgearld as man of the match
"Maurice steadied the game up. He showed a lot of maturity and experience
in his play." Mikey gave the nod to Mike McCarthy - the corner back,
"Mike McCarthy should be Man of the Match - Derek Savage is one of the
best attackers in the country and he didn't get a smell."
Seamus
Moynihan got my vote, but Seamus is a legend.
