‘The Kerryman’ headlines after the game:
A victory to be cherished
IT was a day that Kerry people will remember
for many a long day. It was a day when, in many cases, boys became men in the
burning cauldron of a seething Croke Park. A day when Kerry produced the aces
in the pack to contain Armagh's vibrant challenge and, in so doing, won
themselves a place in the All-Ireland SFC final against Galway on September 24.
For Kerry's part, this was a triumph for sheer
football ability, for courage and fearlessness and, above all else, for superb
physical fitness which saw the green and gold clad footballers of the Kingdom
impose their mastery on the Ulster champions in extra time.
I could
never see Kerry losing
It was a great day to be a Kerryman in Croke
Park and you'd have to be very proud of the way our lads performed. Armagh, of
course, deserve an awful lot of credit too and I just hope they get the
All-Ireland they deserve down the road, though I would never like to see it at
our expense.

‘The Kerryman’ headlines after the game:
Fortunate to survive
IN
what can only be described as a truly extraordinary Bank of Ireland All-Ireland
SFC semi-final at Croke Park on Sunday, Kerry were extremely fortunate, in the
end, to live to fight another day against a resilient and battling Armagh
combination.
WHAT
would have happened to John Bannon on Sunday if Roy Keane was playing on the
Kerry team?
When somebody like Seamus Moynihan got so annoyed with the official that he was penalised for dissent in the second half, then it just proves to me how inadequate Bannon was on the day.
WHEN WE MET IN THE FINAL – 49 YEARS AGO!
27 September
1953 – All-Ireland Senior Football Final – Croke Park
Kerry 0-13 _v_ Armagh 1-06
Captains: Jas Murphy
(Kerry) & Sean Quinn (Armagh)
Referee: Peter McDermott (Meath) _Attendance: 86,155
“A
novel paring, between Kerry and Armagh, the first of the segregated counties to
contest an All-Ireland final”, was how the official programme previewed the ‘53
final, which was played before a record attendance.
Armagh
had the better start, with a goal by Mal McEvoy giving them a 1-1 to 0-2 lead.
Two pointed frees by Tadhgie Lyne had the sides level and Armagh held a slender
lead of one point 1-3 to 0-5 at the break.
The
sides were still level at the end of the third quarter before Tadhgie Lyne and
John Joe Sheehan gave Kerry a two point lead.
Then
came the defining moment of the game when Bill McCorry shot wide from an Armagh
penalty. Taking advantage of the let-off, Kerry finished with points by John
Joe Sheehan and Jackie Lyne to bridge a gap of seven years without a title –
their longest since the Sam Maguire was first presented in 1928.
