WHAT A WEEKEND IT PROMISES TO BE...

Kerry and Cork have reached this Sunday’s Bank Of Ireland Munster Football Final in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney without having a serious challenge along the way. Kerry had an emphatic victory over Waterford in the semi-final and in their two outings Cork easily disposed of the challenges of Limerick and Tipperary in their quarterfinal and semi-final. It’s Kerry v Cork in the final of the ESB Munster Minor Football Championship. The Minor Final is at 12.00 p.m. and this also promises to be a thrilling encounter. In the Senior Final at 2.00 p.m. Cork are putting their Munster title on the line with Kerry seeking to regain we title lost in the replay of last year’s Final.

It’s Munster Football Final weekend and what a weekend it promises to be. Everything is in place for one of the great events in the year’s sporting calendar and with The Army Band of the First Southern Brigade providing the music it promises to be an even greater sporting spectacle.

This year’s football championship seems to be going along the predictable lines with the provincial titles appearing to favour Tyrone in Ulster, Galway in Connacht and Dublin in Leinster. Kerry and Cork is always difficult to call and few would be brave enough to predict the outcome given the results of games between the counties over the past few years. The performances by Kerry and Cork in the earlier rounds of the Munster Championship could not be seen as a gauge of what will happen at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. We can only hope that they have kept their best performances for Sunday’s final.

The Munster Final games between the counties have seldom disappointed and as the build up and atmosphere around Killarney begins with the traditional early arrival of many Cork supporters on Friday night and Saturday it should be a great weekend event culminating in a good hard fought Munster Final between Kerry and Cork.

The counties met three times in last year’s championship, the Munster Final at Killarney, the replay at Páirc Uí Chaoimh and the All-Ireland Semi-final at Croke Park. They have met in the league earlier this year but it is the championship encounters that thrill the hearts of players and supporters alike adding a special significance and special atmosphere to this most awaited of championship encounters.

At half time in Senior game the boys and girls from Primary School Selections from Kerry and Cork will take centre stage in the Primary Go Games and this is a very big occasion for the young players from the national schools of the two counties.

We urge our supporters to come to Fitzgerald Stadium early and give our minors the best Kerry support possible. The sight of the Green and Gold banners and flags on the terraces and in the stands along with plenty of loud vocal support will give our team a great morale boost in what is going to be a very special day for them. They have prepared well and trained hard all year and the least they can expect from the Kerry Supporters is that they come in good time to support them.

Kerry and Cork games in Killarney are always very colourful occasions adding an extra special flavour to this wonderful sporting occasion. We had a marvellous display of Kerry colour in past championship campaigns. Let’s hope for more of the same on Sunday next and give the team plenty of loud vocal support as well. That colourful display of support gives the team a great lift and contributes in some way to lifting the team’s performance in their games. Our teams deserve our support after all those hard hours of training and preparation during the winter, the personal sacrifices they have made and their determination to do their very best to bring championship honours to Kerry again this year.

We wish our Senior and Minor teams the best of luck on Sunday.

TICKETS

Patrons are strongly requested to arrive at the turnstiles before 1.15 p.m. at the very latest. They cannot expect to be admitted after the 2.00 p.m. throw in.

To ease the access of patrons to the ground everybody attending the game is asked to co-operate with the above requests and avoid long queues close to throw in time.

It is important that the holders of terrace tickets go to the correct stiles at the stadium on Sunday. The tickets are colour coded with the words GREEN, BLUE and RED printed on the ticket. Green ticket holders can only gain admittance through the stiles on Dalton's Avenue; this is through the car park at the stand end of the ground. Blue coloured tickets will enter through the stiles 13 to 25 on Upper Lewis Road and on the avenue up to St Finan’s Hospital and they are advised to approach the ground from the Bypass Road. Red coloured tickets holders will gain admittance through the stiles 1 to 11 on Lower Lewis Road - this is at the main gate of the stadium that leads on to the small practice pitch. This system must be strictly adhered to and will be enforced on match day.

Patrons are strongly advised to come early and to follow the above instructions on the entry points corresponding to the colour of their ticket. Ticket holders are requested to follow these instructions and co-operate in every way with the Gardaí and the stewards both inside and outside the ground. After the game those exiting from the terrace should leave the ground at the nearest exit to them, which to all intents and purposes corresponds to where they entered.

These measures have been taken to ensure the comfort and safety of everybody attending the game. Nobody will gain admittance without a ticket and that includes juveniles. The one person, one ticket system will be strictly enforced. Gardaí and stewards will man barriers on the approach to the ground and only ticket holders will be allowed through these barriers.

The county players were not made available for this round and their absence was obviously missed by their clubs with defeats for An Ghaeltacht, Dr. Crokes and Laune Rangers.
