INTERMEDIATE, JUNIOR & NOVICE C'SHIPS KICK OFF... The first round games in the Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate, Junior and Novice Championships are on this weekend with games on Saturday at 7.00 p.m. and on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. Extra time will be played if necessary. The opportunity to play at Croke Park in an All-Ireland Club Final is the ultimate prize for all the clubs embarking on that road this weekend and each and every one of them would love to follow in the footsteps of Ardfert, Duagh and Finuge. For that reason I’m sure every club team will give their all in this weekend’s first round games as they take the first step towards capturing the county Intermediate and Junior titles. Earlier this year it was Ardfert, who set the standard for the Intermediate Championship winning the All-Ireland Intermediate All-Ireland Club title at Croke Park. Duagh followed in the footsteps of Ardfert and Finuge to contest the All-Ireland Junior Club Final and although they did not win the title they gave a great account of themselves at Croke Park. Winning the Munster Club title after a fantastic final against the Cork Champions, Adrigole was a big morale boost for the club and subsequently they got full value from their participation in the All-Ireland series, which gave their players the opportunity to play at Croke Park. There are some mouth watering and interesting contests in store for the club players and their supporters over the weekend. If last year’s experience is anything to go by then there could be some shock results when the cut and thrust of championship football grips the players, who would all dearly love to have experience of eventually playing in an All-Ireland Intermediate or Junior Club Final in Croke Park. We all know from the experience gained by Ardfert, Finuge and Duagh the impact for a club and local community of playing in the Munster and All-Ireland Intermediate and Junior Club Championships. The Intermediate and Junior Club Provincial and All-Ireland Series are quickly gaining the same level of interest as the Senior Club Championship. The road to All-Ireland glory and the experience of playing in Croke Park could start for some Kerry club this weekend. RESULTS: Short match reports can be faxed to the above fax number or e-mailed to prokygaa@gofree.indigo.ie at any time on Saturday night or on Sunday. They can also be phoned after 8 o'clock on Sunday night. These reports need only be sixty or seventy words long and should include the half-time score and the important scores and scorers of each half as well as any incident that was of significance in the game, such as a penalty or an important save by the goalkeeper. The full-time score, however, should be phoned immediately after the game in order to meet the deadlines for the national papers and radio. It would be desirable to have reports from every game in the Intermediate, Junior and Novice championships. HOGAN CUP FINAL It was a disappointing day for Tralee CBS in the final of the Hogan Cup, the All-Ireland Colleges Senior Football Championship at Croke Park last Sunday. A very strong and talented team from Omagh CBS defeated them. The winners enjoyed good possession and even though they squandered some good scoring chances there was little that Tralee CBS could do when they were had a minimum of possession and getting well closed down in attack when they had possession. It is difficult for them to accept defeat after enjoying a very successful campaign in Munster and in the All-Ireland Semi-final. The players and their trainers, Eamon Walsh and John O’Keeffe can be proud of their Corn Uí Mhuirí title, a competition that has always carried a great deal of prestige in Munster Colleges and the opportunity to play at Croke Park is valuable experience for the players who will hopefully have further opportunities to play there with Kerry teams and even their club teams. CREDIT UNION COUNTY LEAGUE Dr. Crokes had their first victory in Division 1 after beating Ardfert in a back game on Sunday last in a back game. They play An Ghaeltacht in another back game at Gallarus on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. In a Division 2 back game Beale defeated Waterville last Saturday and in Division 4 St. Pat’s defeated Ballyduff. Division 1 Dr. Crokes 0-11 Ardfert 0-08 Dr. Crokes opened the scoring in the second minute with a James Fleming point, Ardfert quickly replied with points from John Egan & Stephen Wallace, a long range effort from minor Johnny Buckley brought parity in the 10th minute, Wallace restored the lead for Ardfert in the 13th minute. 4 unanswered points from Dr. Crokes Fleming (2) & Brian Looney (2) gave Crokes a lead they were not going to relinquish. Further minors by Wallace & Egan for Ardfert and Kieran O’Leary and Brian Looney for Crokes left the halftime score Dr. Crokes 0-08 Ardfert 0-05. Michael O`Grady opened the scoring in the second half with a point in the 3rd minute, Wallace with a free and Jonathan Best narrowed the gap 0-9 – 0-7. O`Grady increased Crokes lead with a fine effort in the 10th minute. From here to the finish both sides were guilty of some wasteful shooting with Crokes being the more guilty party. Eamon Ferris with a long range effort in the 16th minute completed the Ardfert scoring and Buckley with a free in the 21st likewise for Dr. Crokes. Best for Dr. Crokes were the outstanding Michael Moloney at full back ably assisted by Keith McMahon and John Payne, Luke Quinn never put a foot wrong at centre back. Johnny Buckley & Ambrose O’Donovan dominated the centre field exchanges while Brian Looney, James Fleming & Michael O’Grady were the pick of the forward line. M. Moloney, E. Ferris, J. Egan, J. Dowling tried hardest for Ardfert. Division 2 Beale 2-14 Waterville 1-11 Team: S.Dee, C.Kissane, C.Kissane, B.Horgan, B. Browne, J.King, J. Griffin, O.Horgan (0-8), M.O Connor, T.Hayes (1-2), J.Horgan, S.O Sullivan, B.O Mahony, I. Blake (1-2), J. McMahon (0-2). Subs: F.Stack for S.O Sullivan. In the other divisions the most of the postponed Round 1 games remain to be arranged. Details of these fixtures will be in next week’s edition.
