CO. CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007... After the Round 1 games of the AIB County Senior Football Championship last weekend Ardfert, An Ghaeltacht, Kerins O’Rahilly’s, Laune Rangers, Austin Stacks and Dr. Crokes are through to the third round from the Club Section and St. Brendan’s, Mid Kerry, Kenmare and East Kerry are through from the Divisional/Group Teams Section. South Kerry, have a bye into third round. The ten losing teams from last weekend’s first round play again this weekend in Round 2 to determine the remaining five teams to go into the third round draw. On Saturday evening at 7.30 p.m. Feale Rangers play St. Kieran’s at Listowel, West Kerry play Shannon Rangers at Annascaul and Rathmore host Kilcummin. On Sunday afternoon at 2.30 p.m. Milltown/Castlemaine are at home to Dingle and at 7.00 p.m. Legion play John Mitchels at Fitzgerald Stadium. The draw for Round 3 will be held after the game on Sunday afternoon on Radio Kerry between 5.00 p.m. and 6.00 p.m. The three losing teams from the clubs section will have to playoff for retaining their senior championship status. One game will be drawn and the winners of this playoff retain their senior status while the losing team will play the club that got the bye. The winners of the second playoff retain senior status and the losing team will be relegated. MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP A very accomplished Limerick team held Kerry to a draw in the semi-final of the ESB Munster Minor Football Championship last Wednesday at The Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. In last Saturday’s replay at Austin Stack Park there was little separating the teams during the first half and for the fifteen minutes of the second half. A few inspirational substitutions and positional switches turned the game in Kerry’s favour and saw them emerge as comfortable winners at the finish. The full time score did a disservice to a gallant Limerick team who battled hard to the finish. Kerry will face Cork in the Munster Final on Sunday July 1st. The final will be the curtain raiser to the Bank Of Ireland Munster Senior Football Final. Round 5 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League will be played on the weekend of May 27th with games on Saturday at 7.30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2.30 p.m. Listry are at home to Laune Rangers B on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. in a back game. MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES The replay of the Munster Minor Football Championship Semi-final last Saturday caused the postponement of many of last weekend’s games in The Keane’s Super Valu County Minor Football Leagues. Many teams have already qualified for the knockout stages of the league but rank order of the teams on the league tables are not decided until the results of back games are known. A number of factors such as Kerry minor team preparation, the postponement of the first round games in mid March due to bad weather, colleges games and school tours meant that the regular Friday evening schedules were seriously disrupted. We now face into the proximity of the Leaving and Junior Certificate examinations. This means that the leagues will not be completed until after the exams. MINOR HURLING LEAGUES In the Keane’s Super Valu County Minor Hurling League Kilmoyley have qualified for the Division 1 Final. St. Brendan’s, Ballyheigue and Crotta finished in joint second and on Sunday last Crotta O’Neills received a walkover from St. Brendan’s in a semi-final playoff. Crotta O’Neills will play Ballyheigue in the semi-final on this Saturday at 7.00 p.m. at Ballyduff. Extra time will be played if necessary. Causeway defeated Ballyduff by just a single point in the very high scoring Division 2 Final played at Causeway last Sunday. JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES The Round 2 games of the Credit Union County Junior Football Leagues will played at 7.30 p.m. on Friday this May 18th. The home club is responsible for phoning in result immediately after the game. In the past the return of results from these leagues has been very unsatisfactory. Clubs are asked to rectify that situation this year. CO. HURLING LEAGUES The Round 5 games of the Credit Union County Senior Hurling League will be played on this Sunday at 2.30 p.m. with the exception of kilmoyley v Causeway which will be played on this Friday at 7.30 p.m. Round 4 in Division 2A and Round 3 in Division 2B of the Credit Union County Senior Hurling League will be played on this Wednesday May 16th. All games are at 7.30 p.m. The home club is responsible for phoning in the result to the County PRO immediately after the game finishes. COUNTY COMMITTEE MEETING The May meeting of the County Committee will be held on Monday May 21st at 8.30 p.m. at The Pavilion, Austin Stack Park, Tralee. VHI GAA CÚL CAMPS The official Munster launch of the “VHI GAA Cúl Camps” took place on Monday at the Mallow GAA Complex. Speaking on behalf of the sponsors Tom Hennessy of VHI expressed his delight at the success of the Cul Camps last year and he was confident that they will be even more successful this summer. Munster Council Vice Chairman, Sean Walsh said that the camps are an integral part of the GAA summer calendar in Munster and he hoped that all the children attending the camps during July and August in each of the six Munster counties will get the maximum enjoyment from them and that they will learn the skills of football and hurling in a fun atmosphere. The camps will run throughout the summer from Monday to Friday, 9.30 am to 2.30 pm at various venues in each county and in addition to learning the skills of Gaelic games under the tutelage of qualified GAA coaches, participating children will receive a full set of playing gear (jersey, togs and socks) and a knapsack. Camps will be held at different venues throughout Kerry each week during July and August. The camps will include a wide range of football and hurling activities, providing children with learning experiences in an environment of fun and enjoyment. All ranges of football and hurling skills will be taught. Children will take part in mini leagues, fun games and a variety of skill-based activities. Additional details are available from Camp Coordinator Bernie Reen (087) 2020143 or Kerry County Board (066) 7122061. Application forms are available from Kerry County Board, schools.
