CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2007...

There were some very closely fought games and some that were not so close, a number of shock results and the North Kerry clubs have certainly been influenced by the recent successes of their neighbours, Finuge, Ardfert and Duagh. The North Kerry clubs had good victories over some of the fancied teams in the first round of the Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate, Junior and Novice Championships last weekend. Surprisingly St. Michael’s/Foilmore is the only club from South Kerry to survive the first round of the club championships.

In the Intermediate Championship Beaufort, Duagh, Listowel Emmets, Finuge, St. Michael’s/Foilmore, Currow, Castleisland Desmonds and Annascaul are through to the quarterfinals at the expense of Sneem, Waterville, St. Mary’s, Glenflesk, Gneeveguilla, Spa, Dromid Pearses and Ballymacelligott.

In the Junior Championship there were wins for Keel, Castlegregory, Firies, Moyvane, St. Pat’s, Cordal and Tarbert against Skellig Rangers, Kenmare, Ballylongford, Glenbeigh/Glencar, Renard, Valentia and Beale. Two of the games Castlegregory v Kenmare and Moyvane v Glenbeigh/Glencar went to extra time to break the deadlock of high intensity and closely fought championship encounters. The game between Lispole and Ballyduff was postponed as a mark of respect to the late John Carroll, former Ballyduff and Kerry Senior Hurler. This game has been rearranged for this Saturday at 7.00 p.m. at Lispole.

In the Novice Championship Na Gaeil, Scartaglin, Churchill, St. Senan’s, Tuosist, Likstry and Cromane are through to the quarterfinals. The appointed referee did not turn up for the Kilgarvan v Ballydonghue game and we apologise to both teams for this, especially to the Ballydonoghue players, mentors and supporters who made the long journey to Kilgarvan.

The draw for the quarterfinals will be made at the next meeting of the Competitions Control Committee. The quarterfinals are scheduled for the weekend of June 17th. The losing teams from the first round games will play in a Shield competition on the same dates as the championships.

CREDIT UNION COUNTY LEAGUE

An Ghaeltacht had a big win against Dr. Crokes in their Division 1 back game of the Credit Union County Senior Football League at Gallarus on Saturday last. A big man of the match performance by Rob Mac Gearailt guided his team to victory and they were without Darragh Ó Sé and Dara Ó Cinnéide. An Ghaeltacht have climbed up the table to join Laune Rangers in joint second place, one point behind the leaders, Kerins O’Rahillys.

Dingle won the 2006 Division 2 Final beating Ardfert in extra time on Saturday last at Castlegregory.

Two back games in Division 5 are down for decision this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. Churchill play Derrynane at Cromane and Kilgarvan are at home to Knocknagoshel.

COUNTY MINOR LEAGUES

A number of postponed games from Round 1 of the Keane’s Super Valu County Minor Football Leagues will be played on this Friday May 4th at 7.30 p.m. Clubs with players on the Kerry minor panel will be notified with details of their fixtures.

The home club is responsible for phoning in the result to the County PRO immediately after the game finishes.

MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Kerry play Limerick in the semi-final of the ESB Munster Minor Football Championship on Wednesday May 9th at 7.15 p.m. at The Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. Kerry defeated Tipperary in the quarterfinal last month and Limerick defeated Clare after a replay in their quarterfinal to qualify for the semi-final. Cork will play Tipperary at Kilmallock in the second semi-final also on May 9th. The replay date is Saturday May 12th. Tipperary qualified for the semi-final having beaten Clare in a replay of their first round game of the qualifiers group and Waterford in the second round. The final will be the curtain raiser to the senior final on Sunday July 1st.

JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES

The first round games of the Credit Union County Junior Football Leagues have been rescheduled for Bank Holiday Monday May 7th at 7.00 p.m. to facilitate the back games of the minor leagues on this Friday night. The home club is responsible for phoning in the result to the County PRO immediately after the game finishes.

Where the Round 1 fixtures for Bank Holiday Monday do not suit clubs are encouraged to agree an alternative date provided all games are played before the second round. The leagues will resume their regular Friday night slot for Round 2 on Friday May 18th.

JUNIOR ELEIGIBILITY

The following eligibility restrictions for playing in the 2007 County Junior Football Leagues have been agreed by the Competitions Control Committee. . A club’s first 15 players are automatically excluded, any player who starts a Club Championship game (a player coming on as a sub is eligible) or who plays in the Senior County Championship with a Divisional Team even as a sub is also excluded. All Senior, Under 21 and Junior County panellists are excluded. Clubs may make an appliction for a minor player. Players, who through injury or transfers were not available early in the season, cannot play in the junior leagues. Clubs may apply in writing to the CCC to regrade players after Round 1 of the Club Championships.

Clubs first 15 lists must be approved by District Boards and sent to County CCC.

SOCIAL & RECREATIONAL GAMES

The County Junior Leagues are regarded as social and recreational games. In Kerry we are well ahead as far providing recreational games programmes for players and they have proved very popular. Players look forward to playing in these leagues every Friday evening throughout the summer. The leagues provide opportunities for those interested in playing Gaelic games outside of the traditional competition structures.

Social games are an integral part of club life and there is a responsibility on GAA clubs to provide games for all their members and not just the elite. There is much that can be done by clubs to promote the playing of our games in a recreational or social context and clubs are encouraged to examine ways in which they can develop non-contact games on a social level among their members.

The emphasis on participation and fun and to encourage the participation of those whose interest in sport is primarily recreational and social and for whom competitive success is not a priority.

CO. HURLING LEAGUES

St. Brendan’s play Abbeydorney and Ballyheigue play Kilmoyley on this Friday at 7.30 p.m. in Round 4 of the Credit Union County Senior Hurling League. Crotta O’Neills play Lixnaw on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. The game between Ballyduff and Causeway is postponed because of the rescheduling of Ballyduff’s Junior Football Championship game against Lispole.

Round 2 in Division 2A of the Credit Union County Senior Hurling League will be played on this Wednesday May 2nd.

AIB COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Round 1 games of the AIB County Senior Football Championship are just a week away and all the competing teams are in full championship preparation mode for what promises to be a hectic weekend of action. The three in a row reigning County Champions, South Kerry have a bye into Round 3.

ALL-IRELAND SCÓR SINSEAR FINALS

Congratulations to the Figure Dancing Group and the Set Dancing Group from Spa, and the Rathmore Quiz team on winning All-Ireland Scór Sinsear at the All-Ireland Finals of Scór Sinsear held at the INEC, Killarney last Saturday. The Instrumental Music from Glenflesk were not successful but they competed with distinction and were excellent representatives for their club and county.

DEFIBRILATORS

Clubs wishing to purchase a defibrillator should forward cheque to the County Board Office without delay.

Central Council at their February meeting decided that an automated external defibrillator (AED) must be made available and easily accessible at venues for inter-county games. The ruling was based on a recommendation from the National Medical, Scientific and Welfare Committee who also strongly advise that every club venue should have an AED. They further recommend the concept of basic life support training for all full time staff members in clubs and as many ordinary members as possible.

In an effort to encourage counties and clubs to meet these requirements/recommendations, they decided to make a bulk purchase of defibrillators at national level. It means that clubs and counties will be able to purchase defibrillators at the keenest of prices, €990 +21% VAT which is way below the purchase price for individual defibrillators.

Clubs must purchase defibrillators through their County Committee. Individual orders from clubs will not be accepted. Please note that while training can be purchased through Heart Safety Solutions by clubs or County Committees, individual clubs or counties may arrange their own training. We are looking into the possibility of acquiring a national sponsor for training and will let you know the outcome of that before the first defibrillators ordered are distributed (3/4 weeks).

VHI CÚL CAMPS

The “VHI GAA Cúl Camps”, will run throughout Kerry during the summer from Monday to Friday, 9.30 am to 2.30 pm, at venues around the county. In addition to learning the skills of Gaelic games under the tutelage of qualified GAA coaches, participating children will receive a full set of playing gear (jersey, togs and socks) and a knapsack.

The huge growth in numbers attending the summer camps established a need for their organisation on a national basis, thus enabling the promotion of the camps in a more streamlined manner and ensuring that quality of standards and principles of best practice will be observed nationwide. A national promotional programme has been initiated to publicise VHI GAA Cúl Camps and children will be able to apply for inclusion in the camps this year by contacting their local camp co-ordinator at the Coaching Office, The Pavilion, Austin Stack Park, Tralee.

The football and hurling camps will be of five days duration from 10.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. each day. The venues and dates for the Kerry camps have been published in the 2007 Eolaire and in the Kerry Coaching and Games Manual. Application forms are also available from the Games Promotion Officers and coaches on their schools visits.

SYMPATHY

We extend our deepest sympathy to the family of the late John Carroll, Ballyduff. John won Senior County Hurling Championship medals and also played senior hurling with Kerry winning an All-Ireland B Senior Hurling medal in 1976.
