ITS KERRY V MONAGHAN ON THE 12TH...

The long six week wait since we beat Cork in the Munster Final is almost over as Kerry were drawn to play Monaghan at 2.00 p.m. on Sunday August 12th at Croke Park in the Bank Of Ireland Football Championship Quarterfinal. The game will be played as part of a double header with the All-Ireland Hurling Semi-final between Limerick and the winners of the Cork and Waterford replay.

After such a long break following our Munster Final win against Cork on July 1st its back to the real business of the Championship this week as the team and management can now focus on their opponents, Monaghan. It’s been a long break and it remains to be seen how Kerry will respond. It is unusual to have such a long interval between Championship matches and one wonders if is it easier for Monaghan to focus on their build up to the quarterfinal after their more regular schedule of competitive games. Kerry played just two championship games this year, against Waterford on June 3rd and Cork on July 1st.

By comparison Monaghan played three highly competitive games against Down, Derry and Tyrone in the Ulster Championship. In the final against Tyrone they were highly competitive and might well have caused an upset, a game they lost by just two points. It also showed that they that they can rise to the challenge and have no fear of causing an upset to the leading championship contenders. They ended Donegal’s championship hopes with an emphatic win against them in the Round 3 qualifier last Saturday. Derry, whom they beat by two points in the Ulster Championship, also qualified for the All-Ireland Quarterfinals with a good win against Leinster finalists. Laois. Monaghan have an impressive championship campaign by any standards and will undoubtedly pose a strong and formidable to Kerry in the quarterfinal.

Kerry last played Monaghan in Round 4 of the National League in March of last year at Scotstown and it took an injury time point from Colm Cooper to clinch a one-point victory. That win was crucial in consolidating our position on the table and it kept us on course for one of the two semi-final places.

COUNTY LEAGUE

Rathmore and Kerins O’Rahillys are still the joint leaders in Division 1 after finishing level in their top of the table clash at Rathbeg last Saturday in Round 9 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League. An Ghaeltacht, who had a big home win against Milltown/Castlemaine, are now in third position and Kilcummin are just one point behind in fourth place. The game between Kilcummin and Ardfert was not finished because of an injury to a Kilcummin player during the first half. Listowel Emmets drew at home with Dr. Crokes on Friday night. Dingle and Gneeveguilla had important wins in their efforts to get off the bottom of the table. On this Friday there is back game between Listowel Emmets and Gneeveguilla and the result of this game will have big bearing on the bottom of the table positions. Dingle, Austin Stacks, Emmets and Dr. Crokes have 5 points each at the bottom of the table with Emmets and Crokes each having a game in hand.

We also had a top of the table clash in Division 2 when the unbeaten leaders, St. Michael’s/Foilmore travelled to second placed Annascaul on Sunday. Annascaul won the game and that win along with Desmonds’ victory against Finuge has closed the gap at the top of the table to just one point. Despite their defeat St. Michael’s/Foilmore are still in pole position. John Mitchels had a good win against Spa but they are still second from the bottom above St. Mary’s, who would appear to be relegated at this stage.

There was also a top of the table game in Division 3 on Sunday when the leaders, Tarbert traveled to third placed Kenmare. This game finished in a draw and Tarbert as a result have opened a three-point lead at the top of the table with Kenmare and Glenflesk in joint second place. The game between Glenflesk and Renard was postponed and also the game between Tuosist and Beaufort.

Three teams, Keel, St. Pat’s and Duagh now share the top of the table in Division 4. The leaders going into Round 9, Keel drew with Brosna on Sunday and second placed St. Pat’s had good away win against Ballydonoghue also on Sunday. Joint second placed Duagh made the long journey south profitable with a win against Valentia.

Division 5 leaders Fossa stay on course for promotion with their big win against Laune Rangers B and Moyvane are in second place after their home win against Asdee and Knocknagoshel had a comfortable home win against Templenoe to saty in joint second place with Moyvane.

The next round of games is Round 10, a midweek round, scheduled for Tuesday August 14th.
