QUALIFIERS V LONGFORD... Kerry play Longford in the Round 4 Qualifier of the Bank Of Ireland Football Championship on Saturday afternoon July 29th at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. MINOR & JUNIOR INTERCOUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS The Kerry Minors All-Ireland quarterfinal against Mayo and the All-Ireland Junior Football Championship Final between Kerry and Roscommon will be played as a double bill on Sunday July 30th at Cusack Park, Ennis. The Minor Quarterfinal is at 2.00 p.m. and the Junior All-Ireland Final is at 3.30 p.m. CHRISTY RING CUP The Kerry Senior Hurling team lost to Carlow last Saturday and as a consequence we are now in a relegation playoff against Roscommon to retain our Christy Ring Cup status for next year’s championship. The playoff is on this Saturday at 2.00 p.m. at Cusack Park, Ennis. UNDER 16 & MINOR & U21 INTERCOUNTY HURLING The Kerry Minor Hurling team defeated Wicklow last Saturday to qualify for the Final of the All-Ireland Minor “B” Hurling Championship. They will meet Westmeath in the final. The details of the fixture for this final were not available at the time of writing. The Kerry Under 16 team play Westmeath, in the last round game of the All-Ireland Under 16 “B” Hurling Championship at a venue and at a time to be arranged. The game, which was due to be played on this Saturday, has been postponed because of a drowning tragedy in Westmeath. Effectively the winners of this game will qualify for the quarterfinals. COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE On Saturday last Castleisland Desmonds defeated An Ghaeltacht in a back game in Division 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League. On this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. Milltown/Castlemaine play Gneeveguilla in another Division 1 back game. Round 7, which was arranged for the weekend of July 30th, cannot go ahead because of the All-Ireland Qualifier, the All-Ireland Minor Quarterfinal and the Junior All-Ireland Final. AIB & CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS Milltown/Castlemaine narrowly defeated Legion after extra time in their Round 3 Replay in the AIB County Senior Football Championship, played at Milltown on Saturday last. They will meet Dr. Crokes in the quarterfinal. In the Castleisland Co-Op Mart, Junior and Novice Championships Duagh defeated St. Ballylongford defeated Cordal in the Junior Championship. The game between Skellig Rangers and Lispole was not played. The quarterfinal between Renard and Firies will be played at Renard on this Sunday at 2.30 p.m. In the Novice Championship Moyvane defeated Ballydonoghue and Fossa defeated Tuosist. Na Gaeil will be at home to Scartaglin on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. and the postponed game between Derrynane and Listry will also be played on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. In the Novice Shield the games between Brosna and Templenoe and Knocknagoshel and Kilgarvan were both postponed because of bereavements. Clounmacon defeated Gale Rangers. The postponed game between Asdee and Knockanure will be played on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. UNDER 21 CHAMPIONSHIP The First Round games of the County Under 21 Football Championship will be played on this Thursday at 7/30 p.m. Extra time will be played if necessary. Laune Rangers are at home to Shannon Rangers, Dingle host mid Kerry and Kerins O’Rahillys are at home to St. Kieran’s. An Ghaeltacht are at home to Dr. Crokes. St. Brendan’s play Kilcummin/Rathmore at Blennerville and Feale Rangers play Kenmare at Clounmacon. In the final of Division 2 Kilgarvan defeated Kilmoyley at Glenflesk on Thursday last. A round of the Division 1 league is being arranged for this Sunday. A meeting of the hurling clubs was called on Tuesday night to arrange dates for the County League and the AIB County Senior Hurling Championships. JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES Round 9 in Divisions 1 of the Credit Union County Junior Football Leagues will be played at 8.00 p.m. on this Friday July 21st. It has reached the semi-final stages in the other divisions and most of them are down to be played on this Friday at 7.30 p.m. Extra time will be played if necessary. In the Division 2 semi-finals played last Friday St. Mary’s defeated Gneeveguilla and Spa defeated Sneem. The Final is arranged for this Friday at 7.30 p.m. at Cromane. In Division 3 Na Gaeil drew with Lispole in a back game on Friday last and Ardfert defeated Castlegregory in a semi-final. The second semi-final between Ballymacelligott and Lispole will be played on this Friday at 7.30 p.m. at the Na Gaeil Pitch, Tralee. The Division 4 semi-finals, Churchill v Ballyduff and Moyvane v Beale, are not going ahead this week. The Division 5 semi-final between Waterville and Valentia will be played on this Friday at 7.30 p.m. at Renard. CÚL CAMPS From Monday July 24th to Friday July 28st next week the 2006 VHI Cúl Camps continue with the football camps at Killorglin, Fitzgerald Stadium, Knocknagoshel and Ballybunion while the hurling/camogie venues are Ardfert and Glenflesk. The camps are from 10.00 a.m. in the morning up until 2.30 p.m. in the afternoon. If you have not registered yet but would like to still join the camps then registration will be taken the morning of the camps. The camps will include a wide range of football, hurling and camogie activities, providing children with learning experiences in an environment of fun and enjoyment. All ranges of football and camogie skills will be taught. Children will take part in mini leagues, fun games and a variety of skill-based activities. The following are the Players of Week and winners of the Signed Kerry HURLING CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE The IT Tralee Hurling Centre of Excellence eight-week programme will assist in the development and promotion of Hurling within the County. Local Clubs and current underage Kerry Development Squads, coaches and referees will have the opportunity to avail of the state of the art Sports Facilities provided by the Institute of Technology Tralee and in addition will receive expert tuition from top quality personnel within the County such as Kerry Hurling stars Shane Brick and Michael Lucid and also coaches from other Munster counties. Hurling clubs from all over the county will be invited to Institute of Technology Tralee to experience the Kerry County Board Hurling Centre of Excellence. Clubs and Development squads will receive top quality coaching sessions as well as advice on various aspects of Hurling which will include Diet, Nutrition, Stretching Techniques and much more. In addition, the coaches will introduce clubs to the new Go Games initiative. Each club are requested to send their underage players to the Hurling Centre of Excellence. Each club/squad will receive a healthy meal at Lunchtime for all participants. It will be fully supervised, however, it is COMPULSORY that each club send a minimum of two underage coaches with each team. If clubs are unable to attend the Centre then the coaches will facilitate them by undertaking the sessions in their local grounds at a date that suits. Evening sessions are also a possibility in order to maximise participation from club coaches. The coaches will endeavour to meet the needs of the clubs whatever they may be. This is the second year of this exciting initiative with clubs such as Kilmoyley, Ardfert, Causeway, Ballyheigue, Abbeydorney and also the South Kerry and Kerry underage development squads already benefiting from the initiative this year. Each day will commence at 10.30 a.m. in the morning until 3.45 p.m. in the afternoon with the exception of those clubs who prefer evening sessions. Clubs involved this week: Thursday 20th - Dr Crokes and Friday 21st - Rathmore CROTTA NIGHT AT THE DOGS: The O’ Neills Crotta Hurling Club are holding a fund raising Night at the Dogs on this Saturday July 22nd in Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee. The First race will commence at 7.45p.m. Proceeds of the night will be used to erect a hurling wall at the Club’s grounds at Dromakee, Kilflynn. A hurling wall is an important aid towards developing the hurling skills of young girls and boys. It will be a Family night out. Tickets are on sale from club officers or at gate on the night at only €10. Children are admitted to the track free of charge. Your support would be greatly appreciated. NEW YORK NEWS Kerry had an easy 0-15 to 0-5 victory over Clare to give them three wins out of three in this year’s New York Senior Championship in 90 degrees temperature. They led by 0-7 to 0-2 at half time. Damien Breen in his first game in New York was outstanding and got massive help from Michale O’Donoghue, Dan Doona and Ross O’Donovan. The Juniors had two victories beating St. Raymond’s 2-12 to 1-9 and they came from eight points down at half time against Brooklyn Shamrocks to win by a point on a scoreline of 1-17 to 4-7 after a brave second half comeback. Brendan Henchy and Eugie O’Sullivan are in charge of the Juniors and John Riordan and P. Kearney are in charge of the Seniors.
