MUNSTER CAMPAIGN GETS UNDER WAY....

The day’s programme gets under way with the Junior Championship First Round game at 1.45 p.m. and the Bank Of Ireland Senior Football Championship game starts at 3.30 p.m.

It ‘s not so long ago since our last competitive game at Senior level when we beat Galway in the final of the National League at the end of April. Since then the panel have been in intensive training in preparation for the Bank Of Ireland Championship campaign.

We wish all the players and the team management the very best of luck for this yeart’s championship campaign and the dearest wish of everybody who supports the Kerry team is that it will ultimately lead us to retaining our Munster title and winning the All-Ireland Final. But we must take every game as it comes and on Sunday next all of our attention and focus will be on winning a place in the Munster Semi-Final where Tipperary await the winners on Sunday June 11th.

The Kerry Junior Football panel have been in training for some weeks now and Buddy O’Grady and his selectors, Donie O’Leary and Jim Foley have put a very strong panel in place.

We urge the Kerry supporters to come early on Sunday next and give their full support to the Kerry Juniors and to the Kerry Primary Game Team. The Primary Game between the Kerry and Waterford National School selections will be played at half time in he Senior game we wish the young players the very best of luck on their big day out in Fitzgerald Stadium.

HANDBALL

40x20 Girls Inter Provincial All Ireland Championships

The old saying-so near and yet so far, springs to mind as Connacht edged out Munster by just three aces in the All Ireland Final of the 40x20 Girls Inter Provincial Championship last Saturday in Clooney. This was one of the tightest ever finals-Munster pipped Connacht in the 60x30 Final in 2004. This competition is divided into five age groups: U13 to U17, with a doubles pairing playing two games to fifteen in each age group-with the highest aces deciding the winners.
The Cork and Limerick combination of Catriona Casey [Ballydesmond] and Martina Mc Mahon [Cappagh], gave the Munster girls a great start as the won their two games by 30-5. Aine Casey [Ballymac] teamed up with Lisa Loughnane [Clare] in the U14 doubles-the two girls found the going tough as they went down 10-30. This left the score Munster-40 and Connacht-35 going into the third series of games. Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh [Ghaeltacht] and Aisling Hannon [Clare] increased Munsters lead in the U15 doubles, as they beat their counterparts 30-13. This left the score Munster-70 Connacht-48, facing into the penultimate doubles game. The U16 and U17 doubles were the two games, where Connacht were expected to ask big questions of the Munster girls. Edel Murphy [Glenbeigh] joined forces with Kate Lynch [Clare] in the U16 Section, as they went down to 23-28 in a rip-roaring encounter-score going into the last doubles game Munster-93 Connacht-76. Sharon Twomey [Ballymac] and Anne Marie Fitzgerald [Clare] took on Marianna Rushe and Deirdre O Donoghue needing fourteen aces to secure victory. The two Connacht girls denied Sharon and Anne Marie the spoils, by claiming the two games by 30 aces to 9 aces.
Since its inception six years ago Munster have dominated this competition, with Leinster winning one Title and the Connacht girls breaking the Munster stranglehold last year as they won the 40x20 and 60x30 All Irelands in 2005. Munster had their chances to deliver the gold medal, and bearing in mind the narrow margin at the end it was a hard game to loose. You have to give credit to Connacht for pulling it out of the fire in the last game-“the game isn’t over till the fat lady sings” was well and truly demonstrated here. As usual between these two Provinces-sports woman ship was of the highest order-both teams were a credit to their mentors. Kerry and Clare had five players in action with Cork and Limerick one each-everyone of the girls played their part on the day. Thanks to Noreen Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Dermot Casey and Tom Loughnane for their time in putting the Team together.

Upcoming Events

The Adult and Juvenile players from the County, are in a quite period at present as there was no handball activity on the playing scene last weekend. This is the first competition free period since the start of the year, so it is a good time to re charge the batteries. The next outing for our adult players will be in the 60x30 Munster Championships, which will be starting shortly.
Our Juveniles will resume National and Provincial Competitions next month. Two Teams will be in action at Feile Na Gael, which will be held in Cork on weekend 16-17 June. Fergal Mc Namara, Lorcan Seymour, Conor Ringland, Brian Og Caball and Kieran O Connell will represent Tralee in the Boys 40x20. Ballymac will have the following girls in action-Fiona Griffin, Aine Casey, Ciara Griffin, Aine Casey.
Both Teams will give a good account of themselves, and should be in the shake up for honours. An Ghaeltacht flew the flag last year as their Boys Team won Division Three-Colm O Luing, Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Eilis Ni Luing, Caoimhin O Se and Cian Mac Eoghain.
Four Teams will represent the County at the Community Games Munster Championships. The Kerry representatives will have a big say in this years Provincial Honours. The Ghaeltacht U15 Girls Team-Louise Ni Mhuircheartaigh, Eilis Ni Luing, Ciara Ni She, Neasa Ni Luing, and Sunniva Ni Raghallaigh won gold at last years Finals. The Ballymac U13 Girls Team-Aine Casey, Ciara Griffin, Nicola Horan, Laura Keane, Cornelia Prendeville and Hazel Prendeville took silver at the National Finals. The Munster Championships take place at Limerick venues on the following dates; Semi Finals on July 1st and Finals on July 8th
The full lineout for the County is as follows:
