WE WISH ARDFERT THE VERY BEST OF LUCK ON SUNDAY.... Kerry and Munster Junior Club Football Champions, Ardfert, play the Galway and Connacht Champions, Loughrea, on this Sunday at 1.00 p.m. Croke Park. We wish all the players on the panel and officials the very best of luck and hope that they will bring the All-Ireland Junior Club Championship title back to the Kingdom for the second successive year. The Ardfert parish and community have been given a great boost by the success of their football team and everybody in Kerry is delighted with the high profile and national exposure they are getting as a result. Playing the All-Ireland Final in Croke Park is a tremendous experience for the team, officials and supporters and they carry the best wishes of everybody in Kerry for the biggest day in the history of the club. It is going to be an unforgettable day and one that will be remembered by the people for many a long day. The village has been decorated with the black and white colours of the club as the community spend these last few days looking forward to their big day out at Croke Park on Sunday. Admission to Croke Park is by ticket only and tickets are available from Brendan Slattery 087 27688092, Stan McCarthy 086 8330331, Sean Dineen 087 2395439 and Niall Horgan 087 6797696. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE Our Senior Footballers did themselves and the county proud at Páirc Uí Rinn last Saturday night with their superb and tenacious second half display against Cork in Round 2 of the Allianz National Football League. It was a very close contest and scores were difficult to come by despite Kerry enjoying the lion’s share of possession. The wet evening and slippery conditions was a mitigating factor and although we started to pull away from our opponents during the second half, nevertheless, Cork, as is their custom, never gave up and kept the pressure on right up to the end. These are the kind of games that will do the team a power of good and once again it is good to see the new players settling into their roles. There is a break in the league until the beginning of March when we play Fermanagh at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney on Sunday March 5th. The players and team management are in Portugal this week for a weeklong training camp. They will undergo tough and hard working training sessions that will stand to them in the weeks and months ahead. NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE On this Sunday February 19th at 1.30 p.m. the Kerry Senior Hurling team begin their Division 2B Allianz National Hurling League campaign away to London at Ruislip. Their first home game is against Mayo on the following Sunday February 26th. Kerry can expect a tough challenging game at Ruislip on Sunday if anything can be gauged from London’s performances in last year’s league and later in the Nicky Rackard Cup. Kerry defeated London in a hard fought encounter in last year’s league meeting at Austin Stack Park. Goals at vital stages in the first half paved the way for Kerry’s win. London threatened right up to the end and really put it up to the Kerry team throughout that game. At the end of last summer London hurling was given a tremendous boost when they won the Nicky Rackard Cup Final at Croke Park. We urge Kerry people living in London to come to Ruislip on Sunday to support the players. It can also be a wonderful opportunity for Kerry people in London to have a get together and socialise before and after the game. Kerry are playing in Division 2B in a five team group with London, Mayo, Westmeath and Kildare. Jerry Molyneaux manages the team. Ger Power and John O’Keeffe have been doing the physical training and the selectors are Mike McKenna, Lixnaw, Timmy Weir, Abbeydorney and Mike Slattery, Ladies Walk have been working very hard for the past few weeks in preparation for the league. The team played two games in the Waterford Crystal Cup and Shield and challenge games against Glen Rovers, Newtownshandrum and last Sunday against St. Finbarr’s of Cork. So the preparation has been done and it is now up to the players to do themselves justice on the field and raise the profile of Kerry hurling during their league campaign. They have home league games against Mayo and Kildare and away games against London and Westmeath. SYMPATHY We extend our deepest sympathy to the wife and family of Con Courtney, Castleisland. Con was a regular stiles man at games throughout the county and also at Munster Championship games. On the night before his sudden and untimely death, Con was on stiles duty at Austin Stack Park for the Kerry v Mayo National Football League game. He was also well known as a driver for Nelligan’s Bakery in the Killarney for the past forty years. We also extend our deepest sympathy to the wife and family of Declan Horgan, Tralee and Killarney.
