HANDBALL

Community Games
Three Teams from the County took part in last weekends Community Games Munster Handball Finals, which were held at Limerick venues. Ballymac pulled off a remarkable double as they won the U13 Girls and U15 Girls Munster Titles, while the U15 Boys from the Ghaeltacht were pipped at the finishing line. It was a great achievement for Ballymac to pull off the two Munster Titles in the Girls Section, as they were up against a very strong outfit from Clare [Clooney] in both Finals.
The U15 Team powered their way to a comfortable victory by 107-58, a victory that reflected well on a very well balanced group of players: Fiona Griffin, Aine Casey, Hazel Prendeville and Lorraine Horan, constitute a formidable outfit and are well capable of going all the way this year. Their younger compatriots on the U13 Team did themselves proud, by winning their Final by seven aces: Ciara Griffin, Cornelia Prendeville, Nicola Horan, Laura Keane, and Anna Prendeville put the icing on the cake as they completed a double for the Ballymac Club. The Ghaeltacht U15 Boys Team knew they were up against it in their Semi Final, as they were drawn against Tulla [Clare]. The West Kerry outfit entered this game knowing that they were up against the favourites, and that it would take a mighty effort to pull off a victory. Sean O Se, Cian Mac Eoin, Colm O Luing, Caoimhin O Se, Eoin O Cathain and Eanna Mac Gerailt played out of their skin and were still in the match going into the last singles game. Alas they went down by eleven aces overall, but they really pushed the Banner boys all the way to the finish line.
So the County has two Teams heading for the Finals in August. Kerry have a very good record at Community Games Level: An Ghaeltacht U15 Girls won Gold at last years National Finals, while the Ballymac U13 Girls won Silver. We wish Ballymac all the best at the National Finals, and thank everyone for their work in preparing all the Teams.

One Wall Championships
The World Championships in Edmonton next August, were on the minds of three Kerry players last weekend as they made their way to the One Wall Nationals in Sligo. Ashley Prendeville [Ballymac], Maebh Prendeville [Ballyamac] and Colm O Luing [Ghaeltacht] are playing One Wall at the World Championships, so they pitted their skills against the best in Ireland in this annual competition. Ashley was Runner up in the Ladies Open-her sister Maebh bowed out at Semi Final stage in the U16 girls, while Colm captured the U14 Plate Trophy.
Ashley was one of the favourites for the Ladies Open Event, with the biggest threat expected to come from the Roscommon girls. The Ballymac girl cruised through her first round game against Marie Gilligan 38-10, and had an equally convincing win against Katie Costello [Roscommon] in her Semi Final. Both these games were played on the Saturday, with the Final set for Sunday against Marianna Rushe. The first game went to the Roscomon girl on the tightest of score lines 15-13. Marianna had a wider margin of victory in the second game, winning by 15-8. Maebh Prendeville put up a mighty show in her Semi Final of the U16 Girls, going down by just three aces to one of the strongest girls on show-Laura Mannion. Colm O Luing encountered an odyssey in his games in the U14 Boys section, playing four games on the one day. He accounted for John Tighe in his first game, which set him up for a second round clash with the raging hot favourite M Donaghy [Tyrone]. Donaghy stormed into an early lead 11-3 and was threatening to make short work of O Luing. However the Gaeltacht boy tapped into reserves of courage and stamina that he has used before to telling effect. He stormed back into the game to not only reel in his opponent, but lead him by 12-11 to set up a grandstand finish. This superhuman effort drained Colm, and Donaghy sensing this responded to edge away from him to eventually win by 25-16. Colm then went into the Plate Competition, where he had a titanic struggle with O Beara from Galway pipping him by one ace 15-14. He accounted for R Hogan [Galway] in the Final, by a very convincing margin 30-10. It was a tough day for Colm with the number of games he had to play, but he kept plugging away in true West Kerry style.
One Wall is a very specialized form of handball, requiring a huge amount of court time and brain power to succeed. Every shot has to be placed and directed with the right amount of power, and fitness is vital in this close quarter game. This was great training for the three Kerry players, and will stand them in good stead next August in Canada.

Tom O Connor 60x30 Tournament
The Annual Tom O Connor Tournament will take place on Sunday July 16 at Ballymac Handball Alley. There is a big entry [over twenty] with players from Cork, Clare and Kerry taking part.
