EXPECT AN EXCITING SEMI-FINAL CLASH THIS SUNDAY... The semi-final of the Allianz National Football League between Kerry and Laois at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney on this Easter Sunday at 3.45 p.m. will be highly charged given the great rivalry between Kerry and Laois at minor level a few years ago. Both teams come into this semi-final with a proven record of success in the league rounds and a close game is certainly on the cards. Last Sunday, as expected, all the drama, suspense and tension of the very competitive Division 1A of the league took centre stage at Fitzgerald Stadium. After the referee blew for full time, Kerry and Dublin shared the league points in this decisive game. There was still further drama and tension after the full time whistle sounded in Killarney. Injury time still being played in the other top of the table game at Castlebar between Mayo and Tyrone, As injury time was running out, Mayo and Tyrone were deadlocked on level scores, Tyrone were awarded a scoreable free and had it gone over the bar they would have qualified with Mayo for the semi-finals. They failed to score from the free and as a consequence of that missed opportunity Mayo and Kerry went through to the semi-finals. Kerry and Tyrone both finished in joint second place with 9 points and Kerry were ahead of Tyrone by one point on score difference. This is the reverse of last year, when we lost out to Tyrone for semi-final qualification by one point on score difference. Jack O’Connor and Mick O’Dwyer will be looking to Sunday’s semi-final as a barometer in the run-up to the Championship. In last year’s Leinster Championship Final, Laois were very disappointed when they were beaten by Dublin by just a single point and later by Armagh in the All-Ireland quarterfinal. Their confidence and their belief in their own ability has since improved greatly, particularly during the league campaign this year. Kerry have also shown a hunger and passion for success this year and playing in the league semi-final against Laois on Sunday is an added bonus, giving the players and management yet another opportunity to copper fasten and galvanise the team with at least another competitive game before the championship. There is no substitute for highly competitive games at this time of the year with the imminent approach of the championship season. The winners will meet either Mayo or Galway in the League Final at Croke Park. Kerry decided to toss for home venue with Laois after very careful consideration for our players and our supporters. Playing at a neutral venue would not have served any useful purpose because, from a Kerry point of view, we had an even chance of playing the game at home. We urge all our supporters to rally behind the team at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. It is a very important game for the team and they will certainly respond to the sounds of the supporters’ cheers of encouragement just as they did last Sunday against Dublin. ADMISSION PRICES The admission prices for the league games are decided by Central Council and for Division 1 entry to the stand is €20 and admission to the terrace is €15. The admission for students and senior citizens is €5 on production of a current and valid identification. Juveniles under the age of sixteen are admitted free. MINOR FOOTBALL CHALLENGE Kerry Minors will play Laois minors in an intercounty minor football vhallenge game at 1.45 p.m. at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney on Sunday as a curtain raiser to the Allianz National Football League semi-final. NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE In last Sunday’s quarterfinals Westmeath defeated Derry to qualify for the Division 2 semi-finals and Meath and Mayo finished level and they will have to battle it out again for the remaining semi-final place. Intermediate Champions, Legion in this game. Emmets are now out of the 2006 championship and will play in the 2007 Intermediate Championship.
