A KERRY V CORK FINAL IN KILLARNEY IS SOMETHING SPECIAL...

What more does the football enthusiast need in the Bank Of Ireland Munster Football Final in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney only to have these two great rivals Kerry and Cork pitted against one another. The Kerry Minors play Tipperary at 2.00 p.m. in the ESB Munster Minor Football Final and this also promises to be a thrilling encounter. The seniors are putting their Munster title on the line against The Rebel County at 4.00 p.m.

It’s Munster Football Final weekend and what a weekend it promises to be. Everything is in place for one of the great events in the year’s sporting calendar and with The Artane Band providing the music it promises to be an even greater sporting spectacle.

This year’s football championship has had few notable games or performances that would be considered worthy of an All-Ireland title. Many regard Dublin’s performance against Laois in the Leinster semi-final as one of the better team displays this year. The performances by Kerry and Cork in the earlier rounds of the Munster Championship were not in any way inspirational. Let’s hope that they have kept their best performances for Sunday’s final. The Munster Final games between the counties have seldom disappointed and as the build up and atmosphere around Killarney begins with the traditional early arrival of many Cork supporters on Friday night and Saturday it should be a great weekend event culminating in a good hard fought Munster Final between Kerry and Cork.

The counties met twice in last year’s championship, the Munster Final at Páirc Uí Chaoimh and the All-Ireland Semi-final at Croke Park. They have met in the league earlier this year but it is the championship encounters that thrill the hearts of players and supporters alike adding a special significance and special atmosphere to this most awaited of championship encounters.

At half time in Senior game the Primary School Selections from Kerry and Cork will take centre stage in what promises to be a very big occasion for the young players from the national schools of the two counties.

We urge our supporters to come to Fitzgerald Stadium early and give our minors the best Kerry support possible. The sight of the Green and Gold banners and flags on the terraces and in the stands along with plenty of loud vocal support will give our team a great morale boost in what is going to be a very special day for them. They have prepared well and trained hard all year and the least they can expect from the Kerry Supporters is that they come in good time to support them.

Kerry and Cork games in Killarney are always very colourful occasions adding an extra special flavour to this wonderful sporting occasion. We had a marvellous display of Kerry colour in past championship campaigns. Let’s hope for more of the same on Sunday next and give the team plenty of loud vocal support as well. That colourful display of support gives the team a great lift and contributes in some way to lifting the team’s performance in their games. The supporters of the Cork and Tipperary hurling teams added greatly to the atmosphere in this year’s Munster Hurling Final in Thurles and with these two county supporters coming to Killarney on Sunday to support their teams in the senior and minor finals we must match and even surpass their colourful displays with our own Green and Gold.

Our team deserves our support after all those hard hours of training and preparation during the winter, the personal sacrifices they have made and their determination to do their very best to bring championship honours to Kerry again this year.

We wish our Senior and Minor teams the best of luck on Sunday.

TERRACE TICKETS

A limited number of Terrace Tickets €20 are available to buy on line from the National GAA online ticket service, www.gaa.ie
It is important that the holders of terrace tickets go to the correct stiles at the stadium on Sunday. The tickets are colour coded with the words GREEN, BLUE and RED printed on the ticket. Green ticket holders can only gain admittance through the stiles on Dalton's Avenue; this is through the car park at the stand end of the ground. Blue coloured tickets will enter through the stiles 13 to 25 on Upper Lewis Road and on the avenue up to St Finan’s Hospital and they are advised to approach the ground from the Bypass Road. Red coloured tickets holders will gain admittance through the stiles 1 to 11 on Lower Lewis Road - this is at the main gate of the stadium that leads on to the small practice pitch. This system must be strictly adhered to and will be enforced on match day.

Patrons are advised to come early and to follow the above instructions on the entry points corresponding to the colour of their ticket. Ticket holders are requested to follow these instructions and co-operate in every way with the Gardaí and the stewards both inside and outside the ground. After the game those exiting from the terrace should leave the ground at the nearest exit to them, which to all intents and purposes corresponds to where they entered.

These measures have been taken to ensure the comfort and safety of everybody attending the game. Nobody will gain admittance without a ticket and that includes juveniles. The one person, one ticket system will be strictly enforced. Gardaí and stewards will man barriers on the approach to the ground and only ticket holders will be allowed through these barriers.

MINOR & JUNIOR INTERCOUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kerry won both games in the double bill at Austin Stack Park last Wednesday night. In the ESB Munster Minor Football Championship Semi-final Kerry defeated Limerick and Tipperary who defeated Cork in the other semi-final are their opponents in the Munster Final at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. In the second game of the double bill Kerry were victorious against Cork in the Munster Junior Football Championship Final.

The Kerry Juniors play Meath in the All-Ireland Semi-final on this Saturday at 2.30 p.m. at Dr. Cullen Park, Carlow. We urge our supporters to do their utmost to travel to Carlow on Saturday to give the team their support and encouragement. It is a very busy weekend on the intercounty scene for Kerry teams but notwithstanding that our Junior team deserve to be well supported in their bid to reach the All-Ireland Final.

CHRISTY RING CUP

The Kerry Senior Hurling team play Mayo on this Saturday July 8th at Austin Stack Park at 3.30 p.m. This is a very important game for the team and a victory is essential if we are to avoid the relegation playoff.

We have lost our two games to date in the competition by narrow margins and maybe with a little bit of good fortune and a positive attitude by everybody they will win their game on Saturday.

NEW YORK NEWS

Kerry snatched a last minute victory over Leitrim in what was a pulsating game played in 28 degrees heat at Brooking on Sunday last. The score at full time was 2-8 to 1-9 in favour of Kerry. At half time Leitrim led 1-3 to 0-2 and it looked ominous for the Kerry lads at that stage. In true fashion with the pride of the kingdom at stake the players rose to the challenge. Two goals by Ross Donovan during the closing minutes gave Kerry a thrilling victory. Joan Henchy said afterwards that it was the best ever fight back performed by a Kerry team. Dan Doona scored three points, even though he was closely marked by two opposing players for the full hour. T. Lynch even though selected at corner forward played as an extra defender following the current pattern played by the majority of teams in Ireland. Pa Murphy was outstanding in the second half at wing back and Alan O’Sullivan had a storming second as well. Donovan, Foley, Doona and Donoghue all shone in a great half display.

Team: S. Clifford, Laune Rangers, A. Glackin, Mayo, N. Corbett, Firies, Pa Murphy, Glenbeigh, O. Lawlor, Gneeveguilla, C. Cronin, Spa, A. O’Sullivan, Tuosist, D. McSweeney, New York & Kilcummin, C.
