DUBLIN TRAVEL TO KERRY FOR DECISIVE NFL CLASH... The last round in Division 1A of the Allianz National Football League on this Sunday will see all the drama, suspense and tension of this very competitive division take centre stage at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney at 3.30 p.m. for the decisive game between Kerry and Dublin. Mayo set the pace at the outset in this division and they have maintained their top of the table position despite losing to Dublin in Round 6. Kerry, who faltered twice, against Mayo in the first round and against Tyrone in Round 6 are in a strong position for a place in the semi-finals, provided of course, we win this very important game on Sunday. Tyrone won their postponed game against Cork last Sunday and the result puts Tyrone into contention provided they beat Mayo on Sunday. We are guaranteed a very competitive game and I’m sure there will be a big turnout of Kerry supporters to cheer on the team in this vital game, which has taken on the top billing along with the Mayo/Tyrone game. The results of these two games will decide the two semi-finalists. We urge all our supporters to rally behind the team at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday. It is a very important game for the team and they will certainly respond to the sounds of the supporters’ cheers of encouragement just as they did during the game against Offaly two weeks ago. We can also expect a big crowd of Dublin fans so our supporters need to be out in force and no doubt the traditional banter between the Kerry and Dublin supporters will add a tremendous atmosphere to the occasion. ADMISSION PRICES The admission prices for the league games are decided by Central Council and for Division 1 entry to the stand is €12 and admission to the terrace is €10. The admission for students and senior citizens is €5 on production of a current and valid identification. Juveniles under the age of sixteen are admitted free. Last Sunday at Austin Stack Park, Tralee the Kerry Senior Hurling team defeated Kildare in the last round in Division 2B of the Allianz National Hurling League. Kerry finished top of the table in Division 2B after their victories over London, Mayo, Kildare and the draw against Westmeath. Our main rivals in the group, Westmeath, defeated London by seven points in last week’s round to finish level with us on points. Kerry’s one point advantage in the score difference determined Kerry as the winners of the division and automatic qualification for the semi-finals. Dublin finished top of the table in Division 2A and qualified for the semi-finals. The semi-finals are scheduled for Easter Sunday. The second and third placed teams will play against the second and third placed teams from Division 2A to decide the remaining two semi-final places. In next Sunday’s quarterfinals Westmeath and Derry and Meath and Mayo will battle it out for the remaining semi-final places. This year has so far been a very rewarding one for the Senior Hurling Team. They can do no more than play the teams that are put in front of them and in the league they have won three games, drawn one game and lost no game. While people are entitled to hold opinions regarding the standard of hurling played by the team, results of games are all that count at the end of the day. They are doing their best, their attendance at training is excellent and that proves their commitment to the county team. Instead of criticism the players and management need support, encouragement and appreciation for the efforts they are making. Playing important intercounty games before attendances of less than a hundred people cannot be inspirational. MUNSTER MINOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP Kerry were well beaten by Waterford in the first round of the ESB Munster Minor Hurling Championship last Saturday at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. Waterford qualified for the semi-finals and Kerry will have a second chance when they play the losers of the Tipperary v Clare first round game. COUNTY LEAGUE ROUNDUP WILLIE O’CONNOR An Ghaeltacht are top of the table in Division 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League with maximum points from the two opening rounds after their narrow one victory in the Round 2 game against Kilcummin on Saturday evening. Listowel Emmets, who drew with St. Mary’s and Kerins O’Rahillys who defeated Milltown/Castlemaine are in joint second place. In Division 2 Dingle, St. Michael’s/Foilmore and Annascaul are making a strong bid for promotion as they have full points from their two rounds. Finuge are in hot pursuit with 3 points from their two games including their away win against Sneem in this round. Tarbert and John Mitchels are the front runners in Division 3 with full points, Castlegregory and Kenmare hot on their heels with three points each. Keel and Ballyduff are on maximum points at the top of Division 4 and Ballylongford, Knocknagoshel and Cromane are the early pace setters at the top of Division 5. Round 3 will played during the Easter weekend and many of the games in this round are local derby games to whet the appetites of players and supporters alike. Division 1 An Ghaeltacht 0-11 Kilcummin 0-10 A point scored by Marc Ó Sé in the final minute was the difference between the sides at the end of this very closely fought contest at Kilcummin on Saturday night. Kilcummin took the lead in the first minute with a D.J.Fleming point from a free and he extended the lead to two pints after his 6th minute free from 30 meters. An Ghaeltacht’s first score came in the 11th minute when Aodán Mac Gearailt sent the ball over the bar. Dara Ó Cinnéide had the sides level in the 14th minute. The visitors then began to dominate and well-taken points from midfielder, Eoin Mac Gearailt put them into the lead. They extended their lead to three points with two Rob Mac Gearailt points. Kilcummin replied with a Donald Dwyer point in the 24th minute and a fisted point from Kevin Bruton to leave just a single point separating the teams. Dara Ó Cinnéide scored a point just before half time to leave An Ghaeltacht leading 0-6 to 0-4 at the break. An Ghaeltacht extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half with two points from Dara Ó Cinnéide and a point scored by Aodán Mac Gearailt. D.J. Fleming narrowed the gap with a point from a free before Marc Ó Sé came upfield in the 11th minute to restore An Ghaeltacht’s five-point lead. Following that score Kilcummin rallied and reduced their arrears to two points after D.J. Fleming scored 3 points from frees followed by a point from play by John Devane. After Michael O’Connor pointed there was just the minimum separating the teams until John Devane collected a Michael O’Connor rebound to kick the equaliser. In a cracking finish both sides tried hard to get the winning score and it was Marc Ó Sé who attacked upfield to get the winning point in the last minute of the game. Teams & Scorers: An Ghaeltacht; Tomás Mac an tSaoir, Daithí Mac Gearailt, Muiris Mac Gearailt, Breandan Breathnach, Tomás Ó Sé, Rónan Ó Flatharta,, Marc Ó Se (0-2), Darragh Ó Sé, Eoin Mac Gearailt (0-1), Tomás Ó Conchúir, Dara Ó Cinnéide (0-4), Cathal Ó Dubhda, Conal Ó Cruallaíoch, Rob Mac Gearailt (0-2), Aodán Mc Gearailt (0-2). Subs; Eoin Ó Beaglaíoch, Sean Ó Conchúir, Ricí Ághas. Kerins O’Rahillys 0-12 Milltown / Castlemaine 0-09 An exciting encounter played in Strand Rd. last Sunday saw Strand Rd. emerge victorious but they had to fight all the way against a game Milltown / Castlemaine outfit. It was nip and tuck for the first quarter hour and the scores were level three times in that period. Milltown then made the most of wind advantage and poor passing by Strand Rd. ending the half with a 0-07 to 0-05 advantage. Colm Kerins kicking two points and Ian Twiss kicking a beauty from the sideline. The second half saw Rahillys storm into the game with Milltown / Castlemaine only scoring two more points. Benny Quill gave a man of the match performance at wing back finding time to kick a beauty of a point. Rahillys had further points from Walsh (2), Quill and Fitzgerald (3). With time running out Gary Kissane was forced into making a fine save from Colm Kerins and on the stroke of full time Milltown / Castlemaine had the ball in the net but referee Pat Sheehy (Clounmacon) gave a free out for a foul on the goalkeeper. St. Mary's 0-12 Listowel Emmets 1-09. The points were shared in Con Keating Park on Sunday afternoon last when the men from Listowel came up against the home side, St. Mary's, in a fantastic contest played in fabulous conditions. After the North Kerry men took an early advantage a Bryan Sheehan inspired St. Mary's side came back into the game and went in at the break ahead by 5 points. Listowel got themselves back into the game after a minute of the second half when Aonghus Fitzgerald buried the ball to the back of the net, but St. Mary's battled on and held the advantage thanks to Bryan Sheehan's 9 points from St. Mary's tally of 12, until deep into injury time when Brendan Kelly pointed into the town goal from the stand side to level the game. Nevertheless a draw was a fair result with both teams contributing to a brilliant compelling game of football. Listowel were first off the mark when Derek Galvin and Paudie Buckley both produced points without reply for Emmets, these were to be the only points that their side were to mark on the scoreboard during the first half while St. Mary's were finally getting into the thick of the action. Bryan Sheehan found his shooting range and with this he controlled the game from his boot, adding 6 points in a row, coming from a 30m free, 45m free, 45m sideline kick, long range and short range from play anything the man touched seemed to go straight and trough over the bar, while Emmets could only muster up a goal chance from Brian Scanlon which was cleared off the line by Cormac O'Shea. With the first half coming to an end St. Mary's found time to add another point with the wind, before the break when Sheehan broke Declan McCarthy's kick out, Austin Constable picked up the loose ball and pointed from long range to leave the half time score St. Mary's 0-7 Listowel Emmets 0-2. Emmets were quicker out of the blocks in the second half when a combinations between Mikey Kennelly and Derek Galvin found Aonghus Fitzgerald unmarked in front of goal and he buried the ball past a helpless Cormac O'Shea. Brian Scanlon added a point for the visitors to cut the margin to the minimum, but then after 7 minutes of play in the second half, a team effort which included 9 St. Mary's players ended up with a Bryan Sheehan point from long range, this was a play worthy of the entry fee alone as St. Mary's moved the ball quickly and smartly and deserved everything they got. Derek Galvin cancelled Sheehan's point out with a close point a minute later, but then, after 42 minutes came a controversial matter when it had looked like St. Mary's Declan O'Sullivan had scrambled the ball cross the goal line, but referee Michael Lyne had judged the ball to have crossed the end line beforehand much to the dismay of the home supporters. Niall O'Driscoll had a chance to make up for this soon afterwards when he left numerous players in his trail and came one on one with Declan McCarthy in the Emmets goal but McCarthy pulled off an excellent save to keep his side in the game. McCarthy's save spurred on his side and they added three more points to their tally from Brendan Kelly 2 frees and Brian Scanlon to take the lead by two points. Bryan Sheehan added yet another piece of magic when he pointed a 55m free, Sheehan was on the mark again 3 minutes later when good Aidan O'Sullivan work set Sheehan up in front of goal and he didn't disappoint. With time running out both sides tried in vain to take the spoils when Listowel's Brian Scanlon and St. Mary's Daniel O'Sullivan and Niall O'Driscoll added points to give the Mary's a single point lead. Listowel then produced one last attack and with this a great point from Brendan Kelly from the left wing to leave the final score in Con Keating Park St. Mary's 0-12 Listowel Emmets 1-09. Best for the home side on the day were Cormac O'Shea, Paudie O'Shea, Aidan O'Sullivan, Man Of The Match Bryan Sheehan, Niall O'Driscoll, Daniel O'Sullivan and Adam Quirke while Listowel were best served by goalkeeper Declan McCarthy, Liam Keane, Fergus Reen, Brendan Kelly, Brian Scanlon and Derek Galvin. With a point for both sides, this will benefit Listowel that bit more. Added to their two points from the Stacks game they have made a good start to the County League, while St. Mary's would have been over the moon to take the 2 points to try and secure their division 1 status, but this is still a great start. St. Mary's will prepare for Gneeveguilla next on Saturday April 15th while Emmets look forward to Desmonds away who were defeated by Gneeveguilla this weekend. Finally for the stats people, this was the only the second time since October 16th 2004 that St. Mary's scored more than 10 points in a match, the other coming in the final round of the County League v Dingle in Con Keating Park. St. Mary's - C O'Shea, P O'Shea, JM Clifford, B Curran, MT O'Connor, A O'Sullivan, L Sheehan, B Sheehan (0-9,5f), N O'Driscoll (0-1), D O'Sullivan (0-1), R Keane, A Quirke, A Constable (0-1), J Fitzgerald, D O'Sullivan (P O'Donoghue). Dr. Crokes 2-7 Rathmore 1-8 Dr. Crokes opened their 2006 Co. League campaign with a narrow home victory over Rathmore. The visitors opened the scoring in the 3rd. minute with a point, Dr. Crokes instantly replied when ace marksman, Colm Cooper, turned provider on this occasion when setting up Kieran O`Leary for a goal in the 4th minute. 3 mins. later it was replicated when the same two players combined for another goal. Rathmore stormed down the field and Dr. Crokes goalie Kieran Cremin was called on to make point blank save from the tall Rathmore midfielder, John Buckley, who blasted the rebound to the net. Rathmore took over in the remainder of the half and aided by a strong breeze drew level at the break on 2-03 to 1-06 scoreline. Gneeveguilla 1-9 Castleisland Desmonds 0-9 Played at Gneeveguilla the home team opened the scoring with a point from a free scored by Liam Murphy in the 3rd minute and a minute later Tim Broderick replied with a pointed free for Desmonds. Desmonds took the lead two minutes later with a point from play by John McGaley. Gneeveguilla rallied with a point from John Brosnan followed with a goal scored by Michael Moynihan after taking a perfect pass from Fergus McAuliffe. Desmonds replied with points from Michael O’Connell and Kieran Brennan but it was Gneeveguilla, who finished the half strongly when Micheal Murphy and Ronan McAuliffe scored a point each. Gneeveguilla led 1-4 to 0-5 at half time. They stretched their lead after the restart with points from Ronan and Fergus McAuliffe and Liam Murphy. John Brennan with two points from frees reduced Desmonds’ deficit. Ronan McAuliffe and Liam Murphy with a point each put Gneeveguilla into a four-point lead before Desmonds got their last score of the game with a point from John Brennan. Austin Stacks 0-6; Laune Rangers 0-4. The heavy underfoot conditions contributed in no small way to this low scoring, if eagerly contested game at Connolly Park. Laune Rangers had the upper edge in the opening period and were two points up after 10 minutes with scores from Mike Frank Russell (from a free) and Pa O'Sullivan from play. Stacks opened their account in the 16th minute with a Graham O'Connell point. In the 25th minute a goalbound rasper from Mike Frank was superbly tipped over by Stacks’ keeper Jonathan Conway. A Graham O'Connell pointed free two minutes later saw Rangers lead by 0-3 to 0-2 at the interval. Stacks upped their game in the second half putting over four more points from play courtesy of Mikey Collins (2), Kieran Donaghy and substitute Wayne Quillinan. Rangers’ only score in this half came from a Mike Frank Russell free midway through the half. Division 2 Spa 1-7 Skellig Rangers 0-7 Spa had to work extremely hard to take the points in this very closely contested game played at Fossa on Saturday afternoon. Indeed Spa can be grateful to their defence, particularly, goalkeeper James Devane and corner back Brian Gleeson, who were outstanding all through, especially in the closing stages when Skellig Rangers exerted continued pressure in their efforts to score an equalising goal. Michael O’Donoghue and Ross O’Donovan put Spa into an early lead before Sean Courtney scored Rangers first point. Michael O’Donoghue floated over another fine point from 30 metres and Paul Russell was on target after some good attacking play. Wayne O’Sullivan scored Rangers second point on the stroke of half time to leave Spa leading 0-4 to –02 at the break. The turning point of the game came in the 6th minute of the second half when Niall O’Mahony after a good run sent a centre across the goalmouth where Paul Russell was well positioned to punch the ball to the net for the game’s only goal. Tom Lynch extended Spa’s lead to five points before Skellig Rangers raised their game in the closing stages to reduce the deficit to three points. Due to excellent defensive play by Spa they could not penetrate the defence for the equaliser. Teams & Scorers:- Spa; James Devane, Shane Lynch, Hugh O’Donoghue, Brian Gleeson, Colm Cronin, Fergus Clifford, Conor O’Riordan, Ivor Flynn, Kevin Healy, Niall O’Mahony (0-1), Andrew Garnett, Paul Russell (1-1), Michael O’Donoghue (0-3), Ross O’Donovan (0-1), Tom Lynch (0-1). Subs; Andrew Regan, Conor Gleeson. Ardfert 1-5 Currow 0-8 Played at Ardfert, this was a well-contested game throughout with both teams finding scoring difficult. Currow were dominant in the opening quarter and opened up a four point lead after 20 minutes of play. The home team began to claw back the arrears with a goal from a penalty scored by Stephen Wallace. The teams were level with Ardfert 1-2 to Currow’s 0-5 at half time. Scores were equally hard earned in the second half as both defences stood firm. Stephen Wallace and Johnny McGlynn exchanged points as did Dan O’Shea and Alan Kelly. Francis Wallace scored a point from a 45m free to give the home side the lead going into the closing seconds of the game but Currow got a late free and John Buckley scored the equaliser to tie up the scores at the finish. Annascaul 0-14 Waterville 1-07 After a wet soggy week, the sun shone gloriously over the village for the meetingof Waterville and Annascaul on Sunday last at Waterville. Genie Farrell for Annascaul opened his side’s account after twelve minutes with a free and within five minutes added two more. Then in the nineteenth minute Waterville attacker Gearóid O’Sullivan won a ball out on the lake sideline and quickly found midfielder Niall Moran. Moran sent a long pinpoint, cross-field pass to Patrick Curran, which Curran slotted with ease between the posts. Annascaul held their nerve and hauled themselves back into the game through the outstanding Niall Sheehy at midfield and the ever reliable and elusive Genie Farrell in attack. At half time it was all square at 1-04 to 0-07. Annascaul started the brighter in the second half and ran into an early lead. Waterville were under pressure in most sectors and midway through the half Annascaul had built up a four point lead. Waterville however missed a number of good scoring opportunities, which were to prove expensive in the end. Substitute John D O’Shea got Waterville’s opening score of the half in the twenty second minute through a free and a minute later Patrick Curran followed with a fine score from play. The margin was now down to a manageable three points. Again it was Genie Farrell who widened the gap to four points with just four minutes left in the game. With two minutes left Waterville were awarded a penalty after a foul on full forward Denis O’Carroll. Patrick Curran took on the responsibility but his powerful shot rebounded off the crossbar. Immediately, the ball went upfield and resulted in another point for the visitors. Waterville had one more point before the end but had to settle for second best on this occasion. Waterville Team: Ciarán Dennehy, Shane Coffey, Seamus O'Shea, Kevin O'Dwyer, Buddy O'Shea, Haulie Courtney, Michael Curran, Niall Moran, Denis Donnelly, Keith Moran, Denis O'Dwyer, Gearóid O'Sullivan, John B O'Shea, Denis O'Carroll, Patrick Curran Finuge 1-10 Sneem 0-10 Finuge were the visitors to Sneem on Sunday last and made the long journey back to North Kerry with all two league points. St. Michael’s/Foilmore 2-9 Beaufort 1-6 Beaufort were at home St.Michael’s/Foilmore in the 2nd Round of the Co. League on Sunday last. The home side played with the breeze in the first half and had an early point from a Timothy O'Sullivan free. Mike Moriarty made a great save in the Beaufort goals from Ronan O'Connor. The impressive Sean Fogarty had a point for the visitors and this was followed by a point from Ronan O'Connor. Beaufort were winning the ball well on the full-forward line and Michael Hallissey set up Edwin Kelliher for a point on 9 mins. A defensive mistake by the visitors left Beaufort take the lead with a pointed free from Hallissey on 16mins. Adrian O'Connell had a chance of a goal but drove his shot wide. Bernard Kelly scored a free and was followed by a fine point Padraig King after Beaufort kicked away possession from a free. Beaufort should have gone in at half-time leading. They had a great chance of a goal when a flick-on by Micheal Hallissey to Edwin Kelliher resulted in his shot been saved and going out for a 45. Hallissey scored a point from the 45 to leave the visitors leading by 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time. Beaufort started the 2nd half well but Brendan Kelly had 2 points, 1 from a free and 1 from play, to put 3 points between the sides. Eanna O'Malley kicked a fine point from play Patrick O'Sullivanhad a point from play. Beaufort broke up a good move by St. Michaels-Foilmore but a bad clearance gifted the latter a goal which Ronan O'Connor scored. Beaufort to their credit replied almost immediately when a goal shot from Michael O'Sullivan was saved and James B. O'Shea was on hand to score from the rebound. Beaufort followed with a pointed free from Timothy O'Sullivan. Ronan O'Connor had a point from play and the game was out of reach when Sean Fogarty finished to the net though the hand trip on the full-back was missed and resulted in 3 Yellow cards being issued by Aidan Mangan for dissent to the homeside. St. Michael’s/Foilmore were best served by Sean Fogarty who put in a fine hour at mid-field, as did Brendan Kelly and Colin Granville and Adrain O'Connell. Brian Galvin had a good 2nd half. Beaufort had their best players in Mike Moriarty in goals, Kevin O'Brien at full-back ,Eanna O'Malley, Padraig O'Sullivan, while Edwin Kelliher and Micheal Hallissey played well in the 1st half. Division 3 Tarbert 2-7 Legion 0-8 This result was a great win for Tarbert who were up against last year’s county intermediate champions on a lovely spring day in Shannon Park. Tarbert opened the scoring with a long-range point from John O Connell. Straight from the kick out Patsy O Connell intercepted a pass and got another point. Coming up to the twenty-minute mark Tarbert attacked down the scoreboard side and when Shaun McGinley sent the ball across the goals, Shane Langan jumped high to punch the ball to the net. This was Tarbert’s last score of the half with Tarbert leading at halftime 1-03 to Legions 0-04. Ballymacelligott 2-9 Glenflesk 0-10 The second round of the County league had Ballymac taking on Glenflesk at home. Conditions for the game were heavy due to the spell of wet weather during the week. The first score of the match came from Glenflesk when Shane Dennehy scored a point. This was followed shortly afterwards with the first score from Gene O Keeffe for Ballymac. He followed this with another point. Play flowed freely for the next 10 minutes with scores coming from Glenflesk’s Mike O Shea and some great passing movements from Kieran Savage to DD O Rahilly saw George Savage score a brilliant goal. The score at this stage was Ballymac 1-2 to Glenflesk 0-3. An injured Tadgh Landers was replaced by Sean Brosnan. Ballymac failed to convert some scores and the next free was converted by Shane Dennehy from Glenflesk who also converted the next score into a point from a beautiful pass by Seamus Moynihan. In the final minutes Ballymac continued to take their scores and points were scored by Gene O Keeffe and DD O Rahilly.
