QUEST FOR THE BISHOP MOYNIHAN CUP BEGINS...

It’s that time of the year again when the quest for The Bishop Moynihan Cup begins with the Round 1 games of the AIB County Senior Football Championship on this weekend. Extra time will be played if necessary.

NATIONAL HURLING LEAGUE FINAL

The Kerry Senior Hurling were well beaten by Dublin in last Sunday’s Allianz National Hurling League Division 2 Final at Semple Stadium, Thurles.

The game never ignited and it could be said that our players are capable of playing much better than they did. In fact they played better in some of the league round games and against Mayo in the semi-final. They can take comfort and consolation from the fact that up until last Sunday they were unbeaten in the league and Dublin were highly fancied going into the game. Reaching the final was a great achievement for the players and the experience of playing at Semple Stadium is as good as it gets for any hurler, especially playing in the curtain raiser to Division 1 Final between Kilkenny and Limerick.

Kerry’s focus now turns to the Christy Ring Cup and their first game in the competition is a home game against Kildare on Saturday June 3rd.

MUNSTER MINOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Kerry Minors narrowly defeated Tipperary in the quarterfinal of the ESB Munster Minor Football Championship at Newcastlewest last Wednesday. They join Cork, Limerick and the winners of the playoff between Clare and Tipperary in the draw for the semi-finals, which will be played on Wednesday June 28th. The draw will be made after the winners of the playoff are known, to ensure that teams that have already played each other cannot be drawn as a semi-final pairing. Should Tipperary beat Clare then we could not be drawn against them in the semi-final.

VHI CÚL CAMPS

The “VHI Cúl Camps”, will run throughout the summer from Monday to Friday, 9.30 am to 2.30 pm, and in addition to learning the skills of Gaelic games under the tutelage of qualified GAA coaches, participating children will receive a full set of playing gear (jersey, togs and socks) and a knapsack.

The huge growth in numbers attending the summer camps established a need for their organisation on a national basis, thus enabling the promotion of the camps in a more streamlined manner and ensuring that quality of standards and principles of best practice will be observed nationwide. A national promotional programme has been initiated to publicise VHI Cúl Camps and children will be able to apply for inclusion in the camps this year by contacting their local camp co-ordinator at the Coaching Office, The Pavilion, Austin Stack Park, Tralee or through a special website www.vhiculcamps.gaa.ie. This website can also be accessed through a link from the Kerry GAA Website.

The recommended prices are €55 for the first child, €45 for second child from the same family and €30 for the third and subsequent children. The football and hurling camps will be of five days duration from 10.00 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. each day. The venues and dates for the Kerry camps have been published in the Kerry Coaching and Games Manual and on the special website. Application forms are also available from the Games Promotion Officers and coaches.
