SUPPORT OUR TEAMS The Kerry players and managements of all our Kerry teams on duty last weekend are very thankful for the support they got from the people of Kerry. They were left in no doubt that the days of lukewarm support for our senior football team in particular were over. The Kerry Juniors and minors had good support at Ennis on Sunday and the players and managers acknowledged that afterwards. This Saturday at Croke Park, the players need to know that the county is behind them and there is only one way to assure them that the county is 100% behind them and that is to turn out in massive numbers on Saturday to give them loud vocal support as soon as they take the field and during the game right up to the full time whistle. We are well aware of the massive following the Armagh players get from their supporters and the Kerry supporters need to match that. Let’s see more flags, banners and bunting throughout the county this week, especially in the areas where our players live and work. On Saturday the players need to see the Green and Gold colours in profusion in the stands and on Hill 16. Get behind our team again this Saturday and it will have a positive effect on the players as it did at Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last. They need to see and hear you to urge them on to victory. Give them that lift when needed and a cheer when they are going well. SUPPORTERS CLUB BUS The Kerry Supporters Club are organising a bus to Dublin for Saturday’s All-Ireland Quarterfinal. The following are the Players of Week and winners of the Signed Kerry NEW YORK NEWS In the second game in four days in oppressive heat of 32 degrees Kerry beat Derry 1-11 to 0-9 in the championship. The teams were level after 45 minutes but a good goal by O’Donoghue after a pinpoint pass of 40 metres by Dan Doona put Kerry on the road to victory. Clifford kept a clean sheet in both games and his kick outs were long and well placed. Lawlor, Corbett and Cronin defended stoutly with Breen and O’Sullivan giving their best in the hot temperature. Al six forwards worked tirelessly in tough conditions and kept Kerry in first place for the playoffs. The team was S. Clifford, Laune Rangers, N. Corbett, Firies, A. Glackin, Mayo, Pa Murphy 0-1, Glenbeigh, O. Lawlor, 0-1, Gneeveguilla, C. Cronin, Spa, A. O’Sullivan, Tuosist, D. Breen, 0-2, Beaufort, C. O’Connor, 0-1, Laune Rangers, P. Junior Football League Spa 0-8 St. Mary’s 1-4 Spa’s captain Brian D’Arcy proved to be his side’s saviour when he scored the winning point in the dying minutes of this exhilarating Junior League Final at Cromane on Friday evening last. Indeed it was only appropriate that D’Arcy should be the player to snatch victory as all through the game he really played a captain’s role and for long periods controlled the exchanges from the midfield berth ensuring a good supply to his forward division. While Spa on the basis of their much-improved second half performance deserved victory, full credit must go to a gallant St. Mary’s, who were very much in the game until the final minutes and indeed could be deemed unlucky not to force a draw. Sean Morris opened the scoring with a Spa point. St. Mary’s veteran Seamus Fitzgerald punched over a centre to tie the scoring. In the 12th minute Fitzgerald fastened on a high centre in the goalmouth and placed St. Mary’s midfielder Declan O’Sullivan who found the net from close range. A minute later Sean Cournane sent over a 20 metre free to put the Cahersiveen side into a four-point lead. Sean Casey, Owen Cronin and Damian O’Sullivan scored a point each in quick succession to reduce the Spa’s arrears to a single point. In the 26th minute Spa had an opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty for a square infringement, but St. Mary’s goalkeeper, Cormac O’Shea saved Sean Casey’s shot to leave his side 1-2 to 0-4 ahead at half time. Spa made some interval changes with Dan Kelly coming in at full back and Brian Devane moving into the attack. Almost from the throw in Owen Cronin tied the scoring with a point from a 20 metre free but Seamus Fitzgerald was quickly on target with a St. Mary’s point from 30 metre free. After Brian D’Arcy and Fitzgerald exchanged points Andrew O’Regan collected a centre from D’Arcy to score a point from 25 metres and tie the scores once again. Spa now had the initiative and with the Cronin brothers Owen and Cormac as well as Paul Russell excellent in defence repulsed a number of St. Mary’s attacks. A draw seemed on the cards until Brian D’Arcy sent the winning point over the bar.
