CHRISTY RING CUP BEGINS.... This Saturday it’s the turn of the Senior Hurling Team to embark on their championship campaign with a home game against Kildare in the first round of the Christy Ring Cup. The game will be played at Austin Stack Park, Tralee commencing at 3.30 p.m. The competition is made up of two groups of five teams and Kerry are playing in Group B along with Kildare, Wicklow, Mayo and Carlow. The teams in Group A are Derry, Down, Meath, Antrim and Roscommon. This new Senior Hurling Championship format for Tier 2 Hurling teams gives the senior teams from these counties the opportunity to compete against teams of similar standard. Kerry have a bye in Round 2 on June 10th and are away to Wicklow in Round 3 on Saturday June 24th. In Round 4 we at home to Mayo on Saturday July 8th and away to Carlow on Saturday July15th. The top two teams from the group will qualify for the semi-finals against the two top teams from Group A on July 22nd and the final will be played at Croke Park on Sunday August 6th as a curtain raiser to the All-Ireland semi-final. This is not a time for negative and critical comments on the standard of hurling being played in the county and particularly by the county team. It is accepted that the standard of our senior hurling championship is on a par with many of the stronger hurling counties. Now is the time for these standards to be reflected in the performances of the county team as well. Much hard work and funds have gone towards the team preparations and now hopefully the rewards will be forthcoming. MUNSTER SENIOR & JUNIOR SEMI-FINALS Tipperary will provide the opposition for our senior and junior football teams on Sunday June 11th in the Munster Semi-finals at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. The Junior Semi-final is at 1.45 p.m. and the Bank Of Ireland Munster Semi-final is at 3.30 p.m. No tickets will be issued in advance. Cash will be taken at the turnstiles on match day. The admissions prices are the same as those for the quarterfinal against Waterford two weeks ago, namely, €20 for the stand, €15 for the terrace, Student and OAP concessions are €10 for the stand and terrace and under 16’s will be admitted free of charge to the stand and terrace. AIB COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP In Round 2 of the 2006 AIB County Senior Football Championship East Kerry easily defeated Shannon Rangers and Feale Rangers narrowly defeated West Kerry. The two other games in the round finished level and the replay between John Mitchels and Milltown/Castlemaine will be played on Friday June 9th with the winners meeting Legion in Round 3 on Sunday June 18th as part of a double bill with the Dr. Crokes and Kenmare game at Fitzgerald Stadium. The replay between Laune Rangers and Kilcummin will be played on the weekend of June 18th, which means that the Round 3 game between the winners and East Kerry will have to be rescheduled. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS In the Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate Championship the replay between Castleisland Desmonds and Gneeveguilla, will be played at Gneeveguilla on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. so the County League games scheduled for the two clubs this weekend are postponed. In the Junior Championship, the replay between Tarbert and Beale will be played at Tarbert on this Saturday at 7.30 p.m. instead of their Round 5 game in the County League. COUNTY FOOTBALL LEAGUE Kerins O’Rahillys have gone top of the Division 1 table of the Credit Union County Senior Football after their victory over An Ghaeltacht in a back game at Gallarus last Saturday. Round 5 will be played on this June Bank Holiday weekend with most games on Saturday at 8.00 p.m. Games on Sunday are at 2.30 p.m. and some of these involve the fixtures for teams that have players on the Kerry Senior Hurling panel. Rathmore and Laune Rangers are in joint second place behind Kerins O’Rahillys in Division 1. In this round Kerins O’Rahillys are at home to Kilcummin, Dr. Crokes are away to Austin Stacks and Laune Rangers are at home to St. Mary’s. These games are on Saturday night while on Sunday, Rathmore are away to Listowel Emmets. In Division 2 Dingle after a good home win in Round 4 against Currow have joined Annascaul at the top of the table. Annascaul’s top of the table clash with Finuge in that round was postponed. Annascaul are at home to Sneem on Saturday and on Sunday, Dingle host the All-Ireland Junior Club Champions, Ardfert. Also on Sunday Finuge are at home to St. Michael’s/Foilmore. In the other three games in division Currow are at home to Skellig Rangers, Waterville are at home to Beaufort and Spa travel to play Dromid Pearses. In Division 3 Tarbert, who had full points going into the last round had to settle for a share of the points when they drew with Lispole. Tarbert and Beale play their Junior Club Championship replay instead of their county league game. Elsewhere in this division Valentia are at home to Castlegregory, John Mitchels travel to Legion, Renard are at home to Lispole, St. Pat’s travel to Ballymacelligott and Glenflesk are at home to Kenmare. Keel are now the only team with maximum points as they continue to press hard for promotion from Division 4. In the last round they defeated Ballydonoghue and on Saturday night they travel to play Brosna. Na Gaeil and Tousist are also making solid progress with their respective wins in the last round against Brosna and Moyvane. In this round they play each other in a top of the table clash on Saturday night with Na Gaeil having home venue. In Division 5 Ballylongford and Knocknagoshel are still unbeaten at the top of the table but in the last round these two leading teams had to settle for a share of the points when they drew with Fossa and Cromane respectively. Ballylongford host Laune Rangers B on Saturday night and Knocknagoshel are at home to Asdee. That’s plenty of good football action for the club players on this June Bank Holiday weekend. RESULTS: Short match reports can be faxed to the above fax number or e-mailed to prokygaa@gofree.indigo.ie at any time on Saturday night or on Sunday. They can also be phoned after 8 o'clock on Sunday night. These reports need only be sixty or seventy words long and should include the half-time score and the important scores and scorers of each half as well as any incident that was of significance in the game, such as a penalty or an important save by the goalkeeper. The full-time score, however, should be phoned immediately after the game in order to meet the deadlines for the national papers and radio. The club PRO’s were superb in their return of results for Round 4 a few weeks ago. Most of the full time results were phoned in to the County PRO as soon as the games finished. 16 match reports were emailed or faxed. With a different group of home clubs involved for this weekend’s round let’s hope the return is at least equally as good. COUNTY HURLING LEAGUES Two back games in Division 2 of the Credit Union County Hurling League will be played on this Wednesday May 31st at 8.00 p.m. In Division 2A Kilmoyley are at home to St. Brendan’s and in Division 2B Kenmare are at home to Causeway. COUNTY MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES The Division 1A Final in the Keane’s Super Valu County Minor Football League between Dr. Crokes and Kerins O’Rahillys played at Austin Stack Park last Thursday was a game of high intensity, great skill with some magnificent scores and saves. The game had just about everything to satisfy the neutral observer but for the participating teams and their supporters it was quite a different matter. It finished after extra time with one point win for Kerins O’Rahillys after a closely contested, thrilling and exciting final. The rival supporters were treated to an intense and entertaining final with the outcome in the balance at the critical stages of the game and in fact right down to last attack of the second period of extra time. Dr. Crokes tried hard to secure an equaliser or a winning goal but Kerins O’Rahillys were not going to be denied and they held out against intensive pressure until the relief of the full time whistle sounded to give them a relieving one-point victory. JUNIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUES The Round 3 games of the Credit Union County Junior Football Leagues will be played at 8.00 p.m. on this Friday June 2nd. Results should be phoned in to the County PRO (066) 71 24754 or faxed to (066) 71 81040 immediately after the game finishes.
