ALL-IRL MINOR FOOTBALL QTR-FINAL

The Kerry Minor Football Team play Leinster Champions, Laois on this Bank Holiday Monday at 2.30 p.m. at The Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. Laois will provide a tough opposition having a superb record in recent years at both Provincial and All-Ireland levels. Very often a defeat can have a positive affect on a team and when our players and team management evaluated and examined the reasons for our defeat by Cork in the Munster Final I’m sure very valuable lessons will have been learned.

We hope our supporters will travel to Limerick on Monday to give the team their backing and support because a win will see us qualify for the All-Ireland semi-final and we do need to give our young players the experience of playing at Croke Park.

It is a pity that we will not know our All-Ireland quarterfinal opponents until then but it is the same for every other team that won their provincial title this year.

Stand Tickets for the All-Ireland Quarterfinal are €35 and Hill 16 Terrace tickets cost €20. Family Tickets will also be available.

Co. Championships

ALL-IRELAND U21 B & U16B HURLING

There were very comprehensive victories on Saturday last at Nenagh for the Kerry Under 21 Hurling Team, who defeated Roscommon in the All-Ireland Under 21 B Hurling Semi-final and for the Under 16 Kerry Hurling Team who defeated Westmeath in Round 3 of the All-Ireland Championship. INTERMEDIATE FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

Played at Currow, Finuge easily qualified for a semi-final meeting against Ballymacelligott with a comprehensive victory over Currow in the Castleisland Co-Op Mart County Intermediate Football Championship Quarterfinal. Inspired by the 2-2 contribution from Paul Galvin last year’s County, Munster and All-Ireland Junior Champions showed that they are coping well with the step up in grade. Legion await the winners of St. Mary’s and Spa in the other semi-final.

Co. Championships

COUNTY LEAGUE

Round 13 in Division 5 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League will be played on this Saturday with all games starting at 7.30 p.m. There are also some back games to be played in the other divisions. In Division 2 Rathmore are at home to Skellig Rangers, in Division 3 Duagh play Kenmare and John Mitchels play Legion. In Division 4 Brosna are at home to Moyvane and Glenbeigh/Glencar are at home to St. Senan’s. All these games are on Saturday at 7.30 p.m.

Last weekend’s Round 9 in Divisions 1 to 4 and Round 12 in Division 5 made only a minimum of changes to the league table positions where at the top and bottom ends of each of the divisions there was little changes in the order of the leading teams and those in danger of relegation. So with only two rounds left to play there will be intense and closely fought games by those teams seeking to maintain their positions at the top of the tables and those making a final big effort to avoid relegation.

Austin Stacks are still one point behind the leaders, Dr. Crokes with both teams recording comprehensive victories over Dingle and St. Mary’s respectively. The latter are still very much in danger after those defeats. An Ghaeltacht are still not out of relegation danger although they still have a game in hand having been beaten way from home by just a single point by Kerins O’Rahillys in this round.

In Division 2 the leading teams Gneeveguilla and Dromid Pearses both suffered defeats against teams in danger of relegation in this round. Gneeveguilla were beaten by Ballymacelligott and Dromid Pearses drop down to third place after being narrowly beaten by Skellig Rangers. Spa have now gone into second place. Rathmore are poised also to make a bid for promotion after their victory over Currow. Currow, St. Pat’s and Ballymacelligott are now level on five points each at the bottom of the table.

In Division 3 Finuge suffered a surprise defeat at home to Castlegregory and the game between Ardfert and Kenmare was postponed. Legion’s victory over Keel puts them into the leading group as well.

In Division 4, the leaders Renard defeated Cromane and second placed Tarbert won against Firies. Glenbeigh/Glencar are also in the leading group and the result of their back game on this Saturday against St. Senan’s should clarify the position at the top of this division.

The leading teams in Division 5 are still Ballydonoghue who had a bye in this round, second placed, Ballyduff had a good win against Listry. Ballylongford had a good home win against Templenoe to stay in third place while Scartaglin who are in fourth place won at home against Fossa.

HANDBALL

Senior Singles 60x30 Championships/Munster 60x30 Championship

Ollie Cassidy travelled to Ballymore-Eustace on Saturday, to take on Tommy Hynes [Wexford] in one of the First round games in the Senior Championships. Ollie-who is the Handball Coach in Kerry, was representing his native County-Mayo in this match. This was always going to be a tough encounter, as the Wexford man is a dedicated big court operator. Realistically Ollie knew that a good performance against the Wexford man was as much as he could hope for on the day. The Mayo man certainly achieved this as he took eleven and seven aces in both games, to go down 21-11, 21-7. He was very pleased with his performance overall, and certainly gained some valuable experience against one of the canniest operators in the business. Hynes proved to have a very sweet left hand, as any ball he got down that side was rolled out to perfection. At the same venue Colin Keeling [Wexford] beat Ger Coonan [Tipperary] in another Senior Singles game. Keeling and Hynes are teaming up in the Senior Doubles, and would be regarded as being in the top three or four in the Country in the Doubles Championship. This puts Ollie’s result into perspective, and certainly bodes well for him as he has just started playing in the Junior Grade. Over the weekend in the First Round of the Connacht 60x30 Junior Singles Championship, Ollie beat Oliver Conway 21-8,21-18. The Club Finals were played over the last week and here; Ballaghdreen from Roscommon beat Kells of Meath in the Open Club Final. Dominic Lynch’s game against Campbell Brennan [Mayo], which was due to be played on Friday, last was cancelled. The winner of this game will face Duxie Walsh on Sunday August 30.

Dennis Buckley from Ballymac represented Kerry, in the Munster 60x30 Singles during the week. Dennis traveled to Hospital-Co Limerick, last Wednesday night to take on Dennis Hickey [Waterford] in the first round of the Minor Singles Munster 60x30 Championships. The Ballymac man did not succeed on the night, as the Waterford man took both games. Despite loosing Dennis was upbeat about his future prospects, and vowed to learn from this game . The Gortagullane native played some good handball, but young Hickey killed every ball when he got the chance. Dennis is a talented player, one of his stronger points is taking the ball “on the fly”, or “off the air”. He did not get many chances to do this the last night, but with practice and time in the court this will return to him. Dennis was the first Kerry player to take to the Court in the 2005 Munster Championships.

Garveys-Handball Camps-2005

The Garveys Handball Summer Camps came to a close this week, as the last Session was held in Cloghane-Brandon on Monday and Tuesday last. This was a very successful year in the Summer Camps, as five Clubs were involved and the numbers were very encouraging at all venues. Tralee, Ballymac, Lispole, An Ghaeltacht and Cloghane all participated this year in the Camps. A total of 111 juveniles attended between the five Clubs, which is a very encouraging sign for the future of the game within the County. A word of thanks to all the Clubs for their cooperation, Ollie Cassidy for organizing and running the Camps-and his coaches Clive Counihan, Maria Daly, Lisa Falvey and Sharon Twomey.

She was always very friendly, had a great personal touch and was very people friendly. While we will miss her, we wish her all the best in her new career and hope our paths will cross somewhere in the future.
