ALL THE MAKING OF A GREAT CONTEST....

We wish the very best of luck to our Senior Football Team in the Bank Of Ireland Senior Football Championship Final at Croke Park on this Sunday at 3.30 p.m. when they play Tyrone in the All-Ireland Final.

The Final has all the makings of another closely fought contest. Tyrone have had a long and arduous route to the final, playing a total of nine games, including replays to qualify. All their games have been closely contested, the Ulster final and replay against Armagh, the All-Ireland quarterfinal and replay against Dublin and again the semi-final against Armagh. Having come through all of that they have certainly reached the All-Ireland Final on merit and are worthy opponents for Kerry, who have come through a less arduous route by comparison to defend their title. Both teams are in the final on merit and it is all down to performances on the day that will decide the destination of the Sam Maguire Cup.

We had an impressive win against Tyrone in the league earlier this year at Fitzgerald Stadium but championship is entirely different and we can be sure of one thing and that is we are going to have to play to all of our strengths is we are to retain the Sam Maguire Cup. The teams have such differing styles of play that one can only speculate on how significant the respective tactics employed by the teams will be on the eventual outcome.

Our own Kerry team have been back in regular training since their All-Ireland Semi-final victory over Cork. They have prepared and worked hard all year and we earnestly hope that their efforts and personal sacrifices will be rewarded with a victory on Sunday. The return of the Sam Maguire Cup to the Kingdom is what every Kerry team aspires to every year. The Kerry team have had a tremendous year, the players and the team management have done a magnificent job and the crowning glory we all hope to see on Sunday at about 5.00 p.m. is to see our captain Declan O'Sullivan accept the Sam Maguire Cup from Seán Kelly.

With just a few days left before Sunday's All-Ireland Final let's see plenty more displays of Kerry colours throughout the county. Our team has done us proud this year and the best way we can let the players know how proud we are of them is by displaying our Kerry flags and banners in every town, village and garden in Kerry.

Finally we call on our supporters not to be shy to show the Kerry colours and to make their presence felt with plenty loud vocal support in Croke Park on Sunday.

We are guaranteed a very competitive game and I'm sure the big turnout of Kerry supporters will cheer on the team in this their biggest game of the year.

Let's hope Kerry will get the upper hand over the Red Hand this time round.

SEAN KELLY

Congratulations to GAA President, Sean Kelly on getting a People of the Year Award at The City West Hotel, Dublin last Saturday night. In attendance to wish Sean well on receiving this magnificent national honour were his wife, Juliette and their children, members of the Kelly family and his friends and colleagues in the GAA Management, Central Council, Provincial Councils and Kerry County Board.

In the citation for the award it was stated Sean has led the Gaelic Athletic Association through a series of challenges with confidence and dignity.

As the first ever Kerryman to become President of the GAA, it is perhaps fitting that skilful diplomacy and team work, not to mention a long list of outstanding achievements, have become the hallmarks of Sean Kelly's tenure. In that brief period, Sean has overseen the full redevelopment of the GAA's spectacular new stadium at Croke Park, the joyous success of the Special Olympics at the same venue and a number of further modernising measures. Those measures include a better working relationship with the Gaelic Players' Association, a smoking ban at Croke Park and the establishment of the new hotel, also at Croke Park.

However it was Sean Kelly's leadership during the negotiations leading to the amendment of the GAA's "Rule 42" which has assured his place in Irish sporting history. The amendment of the rule, which in principle will allow rugby and soccer internationals to be played at Croke Park during the redevelopment of Lansdowne Road, was always felt to be the outcome which Sean personally favoured. However, his political skill in allowing debate to take place, in preventing division within the association and in linking the GAA's grass roots to the decision-making process, paved the way for a successful and historic change.

For his courageous and stylish leadership of the GAA through times of great transition, Sean Kelly is awarded a People of the Year Award.

AIB COUNTY HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

Abbeydorney and Lixnaw are this year's finalists in the AIB County Senior Hurling Championship. The final will be played at Austin Stack Park on Sunday October 2nd and the curtain raiser will be the replay of the County Intermediate Hurling Championship Final between Kenmare and Kilgarvan.

Ballyduff, who put an end to Kilmoyley's title hopes, were the favourites against Abbeydorney. Abbeydorney, who had earlier created their own shock in this year's championship in their impressive victory over St. Brendan's did so again on Sunday last with their wholehearted display against to qualify for the final.

Lixnaw, who battled right to the finish to beat a fancied Ballyheigue in the quarterfinal had relatively easy win over last year's finalists, Causeway in the second semi-final.

The pride of the parish and the honour of competing in the county final will be very evident as the supporters of Abbeydorney and Lixnaw gather on Sunday October 2nd to add colour and atmosphere to the AIB County Senior Hurling Championship Final.

The Kerry Seniors had an impressive 3-19 to 2-8 win over Clare to qualify fro the Final against either Donegal or Cavan.

Kerry led by 2-9 to 1-6 at half time and they pulled away during the second half to win easily in the end. The defence led by Lawlor, Riney, Murphy and Corbett gave good protection to goalkeeper, Finbar Flood, who made one outstanding save. Donncha Walsh and Don Murphy ruled the roost at midfield. In an awesome display of scoring, the forwards led by Bingo Driscoll, Crowley, McCarthy, Downey and Foley put up a big score tally. Flynn, Holland and Mulvihill added speed and strength when they came on the oppressive heat.

COUNTY LEAGUE ROUNDUP

The last round of games in the Credit Union County Senior Football League, with the exception of games that had a bearing on promotion and relegation and involving players on the county senior football panel, were played this weekend.

In Division 1 Kerins O'Rahillys had a three-point win over Castleisland Desmonds in the only game played in that division.

In Division 2 five of the six games were down for decision on Sunday last. Here the emphasis was on the relegation battle with Ballymacelligott, Currow and St. Pat's all trying hard to avoid the drop to Division 3. After the points were totalled on the league table Ballymacelligott and St. Pat's are the two teams relegated to Division 3. All Gneeveguilla needed was a point from their game against Beaufort to win the division honours and the game did finish in a draw so congratulations to Gneeveguilla as winners and they are promoted with their neighbours, Rathmore to Division 1.

In Division 3 John Mitchels defeated Lispole on Saturday and this result means that Mitchels have avoided relegation.

In the important game back game between Brosna and Moyvane in Division 4, Brosna earned the two points to ease their relegation worries. Tarbert and Renard have finished level on top of the table and with all their games played they must meet in the final to decide who wins the Division 4 title. Both teams are promoted to Division 3.

On Sunday in Division 5 Ballydonoghue defeated Cordal in an important promotion game and are promoted with Ballyduff to Division 4. The third promotion has not been decided yet but it is Scartaglin and Ballylongford who are in contention for the last promotion place.

Co. Leagues

Division 2

Beaufort 0-14 Gneeveguilla 0-14

The points were shared and that was sufficient for Gneeveguilla to be crowned Division 2 winners and for Beaufort to avoid the threat of relegation. The teams played out a very entertaining draw in Beaufort on Sunday afternoon in glorious sunshine. Gneeveguilla played with the breeze in the 1st half and led at half-time 0-5 to 0-9 with only 1 of the 14 points coming from a free. The 2nd half saw Beaufort setting the pace as a point was needed to secure Division 2 status next year. They began the half in great style and had 5 unanswered points from play to go 1 ahead and though Gneeveguilla scored a point the home side again scored 3 unanswered points. Gneeveguilla went on to finish the stronger and scored the last 3 points to level matters but time ran out for both teams. Overall a draw was a fair result. All Beaufort players did well on the day especially Eanna O'Malley and Sean Fogarty while the McAuliffes, O'Connors and Mick Murphy were best for the visitors. Beaufort welcomed Damien Breen back to action after his trip abroad.
The game was well refereed by Mick Murphy (Milltown-Castlemaine)

St Pat's 0-13 Skellig Rangers 0-10

St. Pat's had a deserved three-point victory over Skellig Rangers on Sunday last. St. Pat's made the early running and were four points up after eleven minutes with a pointed free from David O Callaghan, a pointed free and forty five from Brendan Poff and a point from play from Kieran O'Shea. Skellig upped their game and a point from play from Aiden O Sullivan and two pointed frees from Sean Courtney reduced the deficit to a single point six minutes before the break. St. Pat's finished the half the stronger with points from Liam O Sullivan and David O Callaghan. Half time score St. Pat's: 0-6, Skellig Rangers :0-3. Skellig started the second half in a determined mood with Sean Courtney pointing a free and then adding another from play. Brendan Poff then pointed two frees to open up a three-point lead for St. Pat's ten minutes into the half. Skellig replied with a point from play from Stephen O'Sullivan. Points from David O Callaghan and Seamus Murphy edged St. Pat's four points clear midway through the half. Skellig rallied and kicked four unanswered points through a Sean Courtney free and points from play from Brian Hickey, Kevin Martin and Garry O Driscoll to draw level with seven minutes left. It was now anybody's game but St. Pat's finished the stronger and carved out a three point victory with a final flourish of points from Thomas Greaney and two from Dermot Thornton. Final Score St. Pat's: 0-13, Skellig Rangers: 0-10.

Sneem 2-12 St. Michael's/Foilmore 0-7

The early exchanges were very evenly contested until ten minutes from half time when Darren Breen put Mike Hussey through to take a scored goal giving Sneem a six point lead. At half time Sneem led 1-8 to 0-3.

In the second half Sneem extended their lead and a second goal by Mike Galvin mid way through the second half put the result beyond doubt.

Best for Sneem were Garry Hussey, Killian Burns in defence, Brendan Teahan and David O'Leary at midfield and in attack Mike Galvin, Mike and Ronan Hussey.

Best for St. Michael's/Foilmore were Mark O'Sullivan at midfield, Adrian O'Connell in defence and Sean Fogarty worked hard for the forwards.

Division 4

Renard 0-12 Tuosist 1-7

After a hard-fought game, Renard were two-point winners over the home side, Tusosit who got off to a dream start with a point from M. McNally followed bya goal by Kerry minor, Alan O'Sullivan. John Sugrue, who was an influential figure at centre field for Renard had two points for Renard. At half time Tuosist led 1-3 to 0-4. Two points from frees early in the second half brought Renard level.

A point from Flor O'Sullivan for the home side was answered by Joe McCrohan for Renard. John Sugrue put Renard in the lead which they held to the tend, although Tuosist pressed them gamely all the way with Alan O'Sullivan scoring two points from play in the last quarter.

HANDBALL

Munster 60x30 Championships
Kerry played their old rivals Cork in a Master B Doubles 60x30 Munster Semi Final, last Tuesday night in Broadford. John O Donnell [Tralee] and Joe Creedon [Lispole], had a great tussle with Pat Clancy and Brendan Hurley from the Rebel County. This turned out to be an epic encounter, as the match lasted for the bones of two hours. The Kerry pairing eventually came out on top in a hugely entertaining match. John O Donnell was first out and got a very good serve going. Joe and John pulled away to a comfortable lead, which they held to record a 21-13 victory in the first game. The second game was a mirror image of the first-for Cork. Hurley and Clancy dug in, and won by exactly the same score as the first 21-13. Both pairings faced into the third game, with the prize of a Munster Final awaiting the winner. Creedon and O Donnell proved their mettle here, as this game went down to the very last ace to decide the victor. The Kingdom duo went in at seventeen to push on to twenty-just one ace from victory! Clancy and Hurley broke their serve, and they went in to level the game at twenty all! It was survival of the fittest now, and Joe and John called on all their resources to break the Corkmen's serve and record a hard earned victory. This was a match where there was very little between the pairings, and it could have gone either way. But as Joe Creedon said to John afterwards, they had been on the wrong side of results in similar matches enough of times-and by God it wasn't going to happen again tonight!! Considering the Kerry pairing had very little training together, it was a great win.

All Ireland Senior Football
Good luck to our County Footballers next weekend in Croke Park. These players are representing their County in the biggest stage of all-The All Ireland Final. This takes a massive commitment from everyone involved; County Board, Players, Management, Families and Clubs. We salute the overall endeavour by everyone involved at all levels with the Football Team. These are the players that the young people of this County, look up to and dream of emulating some day.
Any player that dons the Green and Gold of their County should be privileged to do so, and should cherish the honour and the privilege for the rest of their lives. There are very few players in any sport that have the distinction of representing their County. The handballers within the County acknowledge this distinction, and will be there next Sunday, to cheer on the footballers. We thank them for all the enjoyment they have given us through the year, and look forward to next Sunday with great optimism.
Kerry Handball Board are holding a draw, for two All Ireland Senior Football Tickets. Raffle tickets are E2-each; 3 tickets for E5; book of six for E10. Draw will take place on Wednesday September 21st at Ballymac Handball Alley @ 9pm

County 60x30 Juvenile
The First Round of the Munster 60x30 Juvenile Championships, kicked off on Saturday September 13 in Dungarvan. Four players from Kerry traveled to the Friary-Abbeyside Court, to take on Waterford in Singles and Doubles games. Brian Og Caball [Tralee], Brian Keane and Brian Casey [Ballymac], and Colm O Mhuircheartaigh [Ghaeltacht] were the Counties representatives on the day.
In the U12 Singles Brian Og beat David Collins 15-10, 15-2 in two straight games. The first game was very even-both players were level on scores on four occasions, before Brian Og pulled away. The Tralee player started slowly in the second game, but when he settled he pushed on to a comfortable win.
The U14 Doubles saw the two Brian's from Ballymac, loose to John Power and Pierce Galvin 15-3, 15-4. Casey and Keane never settled properly in any of the two games, and were struggling to come to grips with their opponents. These two young Ballymac players are two good sound handballers, but unfortunately things did not go their way the last day. They will have to put this defeat behind them-learn from it, and move on the next game.
Colm O Mhuircheartaigh beat Anthony Butler 21-4, in the first game of the U16 Singles. Butler settled well in the second game to lead by 4-2, when he tripped in the court and had to concede due to an injury. It was shaping up to be a good contest, but Butlers stumble put paid to a potential cracker. Colm's win should set up a mouth-watering tie, against Fergal Collins of Ballina in the next round. Cian Counihan [Ballymac] received a walkover in the U15 Singles. The next round of the Championship will see Kerry take on Tipperary, in the Munster Semi Finals.

Get Well
We wish Declan Ryan [Tralee] well after his recent operation, and hope to see him back in action as soon as possible.

Golden Gloves
The Golden Gloves Tournament takes place in St Paul's-Belfast, on 29-30 October. Forms available on Irish Handball Website or your local Club-closing date for entries-October 10.
