THE CHAMPIONSHIP HEATS UP...

The semi-finals of the AIB County Senior Hurling Championship will be played as a double bill at Austin Stack Park on this Sunday September 18th commencing with the clash of Ballyduff and Abbeydorney at 2.00 p.m. and at 3.30 p.m. Lixnaw and Causeway will contest the second semi-final.

With a place in the final at stake, the championship has heated up considerably with the defeat of Kilmoyley, who were favourites to retain their title; all four teams on Sunday will consider they are in with a good chance of making it to the final.

Ballyduff, who put an end to Kilmoyley's title hopes, might be considered favourites against Abbeydorney. Abbeydorney however created their own shock in this year's championship in their impressive victory over St. Brendan's.

Causeway, last year's finalists, will have a tough battle against Lixnaw, who battled right to the finish to beat a fancied Ballyheigue in the quarterfinal.

Sunday's two semi-finals have all the necessary ingredients for an exciting afternoon of championship hurling at Austin Stack Park. Everybody knows how each club really put their best foot forward for the County Championship. The pride of the parish and the honour of competing in the county final will be very evident as the supporters of the four clubs gather on Sunday to add colour and atmosphere to the day.

Munster 60x30 Championships

John O Donnell [Tralee] met Kieran [The Bird] Bourke from Limerick last Tuesday night in a Master B Singles 60x30 Munster Quarter Final game. This was the third time that John and the "Bird" have met in Championship fare over the years. The state of play up to the last nights game was two wins to the Limerick man-and alas it now stands at 3-0.

John was beaten in a very tight game, which went down to the wire in a tie break. The Tralee man played very well in the first game, to record a comfortable win by 21-15. Things started to change from the second game on however, as the "Bird" started using a lob toss down Johns left. This serve changed the Course of the game, as Bourke went ten up here and went on to win 21-14. The last game proved to be a see-saw affair, but the "Bird" just edged it 21-17.

In general play the two players were even enough, but the Limericks man serve proved to be crucial on the night. Any game that goes to a tie break will test any players fitness level, and Bourke probably had a slight edge here. Dennis Walsh [Tralee] had to concede his Semi Final game to John Cawley [Clare], after a recurrence of an old knee injury. The two Tralee players were due to team up in the Master B Doubles, but Joe Creedon [Lispole] now steps into the void. Creedon and O Donnell play the Cork pairing of Hurley and Clancy next Tuesday night, in what promises to be a very good game. A fair share of the Mens representatives have fallen by the wayside,in this years Munster Championships. Outside of the above pairing; Noel Raymond-Junior Singles, Carl Burkett and Declan Ryan-Diamond Master B Singles and Doubles are the only survivors from the original panel of players that started out a couple of months ago. Heres hoping for a bit more luck over the next two weeks, and hopefully we will see a couple of them in a Munster Final
