Kerry GAA Golf Classic 2020
This year’s golf classic attracted over 40 teams and was played on the Mahony’s Point course at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club.
Annually this fundraising event takes place the Thursday/Friday of the All Ireland Football Final weekend but with the All Ireland Final scheduled for December this year the decision was taken to run it in over two Friday’s, October 2nd and 9th.
Being aware that crowd restrictions attending games may well be a factor in the immediate future due to Covid-19, a ‘Flexible Ticket Package’ was introduced to meet this challenge. Teams supporting this year’s golf classic could bank their ticket entitlement and use it for future All Ireland Finals.
Weather was very kind to us on both days and the scores reflected that with the winning team on both days shooting just short of 100 points with the format being the best two stableford scores at each hole.
On day one the Munster Council team consisting of John Brennan, Bob Ryan, Pat O’Shea and Eoin Ryan were 5 points clear of the rest of the field with a score of 98 points which included three birdies.
On day two the country had moved to Level 3 Covid-19 restrictions which included no indoor dining, unlike day one this meant that the dining room was not available to golfer after finishing but thanks to Paul Cotter and his team at the Tuck Shop after hole 9 outdoor dining facilities were set up adhering to all Covid-19 regulations. The winning team on day two, Garvey’s SuperValu shot an outstanding score of 99 points including four birdies with two of them happening on hole 16. The team was Brian O’Connell, Liam Brosnan, Niall O’Connor and Ryan Begley.
A special Nearest the Pin Fun Challenge took place both days on hole 18 where teams had the opportunity to test their skill against former Kerry GAA Players. This was run to raise funds for the Kerry Cancer Support Group who for the past ten years have transported almost 4,000 patients to over 30,000 cancer related appointments. Kerry Cancer Support Group would like to thank all the players who supported them while having fun at the same time.
