Garveys Supervalu Kerry SFC: Semi-final Replay
Paul Geaney’s superb hat-trick enough to see Dingle into County Final
Dingle 4-13 East Kerry 0-12
By Murt Murphy
After a pulsating battle, swamped in a air of tension Dingle finally came of age when they overcame an East Kerry side that finished with thirteen men in this SFC semi-final replay, played at the Austin Stack Park, which started ten minutes late, to enable the huge crowd to get in.
Replays rarely live up to their hype - but this one had a greater fury than the first match last week and the thirteen point Dingle win doesn't tell half of the story of this contest . Dingle exploded into action with a point from Mikey Geaney within 20 seconds of the throw-in and though Paudie Clifford with a similar effort for East Kerry levelled, Dingle began to pummel the East Kerry defence with high balls towards Paul Geaney and these reaped rich dividends.
Barry O’Sullivan fed Paul Geaney in the third minute and when Geaney was hauled down inside the box by Dan O’Donoghue, he expertly drilled the penalty low into the corner of the net.
Jack Sherwood set up David Clifford for his only point from play in the opening half but he then closed the gap to a point in the 8th minute with a pointed free but Dingle appeared to be in complete control particularly in the middle third of the pitch.
Then came a two-goal salvo from the West Kerry side in the 9th and 10th minutes with Paul Geaney netting the first after beating the full-back to a high delivery from Michael Flannery to bury the ball in the East Kerry net. A minute later, Barry O’Sullivan and Mikey Geaney swapped passes before Geaney slid the ball home to give Dingle a 3-1 to 0-4 lead after 10 minutes with David Clifford replying with a free for a stunned East Kerry outfit.
The second quarter belonged to Tom O’Sullivan as he fired over three points on the break so Dingle retired with a healthy nine-point lead (3-7 to 0-7) and East Kerry were in deep in a deep hole.
Then Paudie Clifford appeared to react badly to some rough treatment being meted out to his brother and it resulted in a red card for Paudie Clifford and a member of each management team were sent to the stands.
The contest now had an edge to it but East Kerry added three third quarter points, to close the gap to 3-7 to 0-10, when the red mist descended on their star man David Clifford. He lost his cool momentarily and he followed his brother to changing rooms in the 47th minute.
Dingle numerically stronger by two coasted to victory with Paul Geaney completing his hat-trick scoring his third goal in the 53rd minute as Kerry defender Tom O’Sullivan once again backed Geaney up superbly , finishing with five points from play.
Dingle faces Dr Crokes in the Final next Sunday at the same venue with not only a county final win at stake, but a place in the Munster Club to boot.
