Club Fixtures Forum
Kerry County Committee organised a ‘Club Fixtures Forum’ last evening in the Rose Hotel in Tralee on Friday evening last.
The Forum was designed to give an opportunity to Clubs to review our own fixtures here in Kerry in light of recent changes made by Congress where the National Fixtures Calendar will for the first time feature dedicated periods of the year for Club activity only.
The Kerry Fixtures Calendar will be drafted after the next County Committee meeting which takes place on Monday 20th November and at this meeting Motions regarding competitions for 2018 will be discussed and voted on.
The Club Fixtures Forum provided a great opportunity to ensure that the views of those most affected by fixtures can be taken on board and where necessary be formulated into motions for the November meeting of the County Committee.
There was a good representation of clubs on the night with between 60% to 70% of Clubs in the county present. Some good positive discussions took place with a lot of positive ideas being bandied about. There seemed to be full agreement that the various Club Championships should be played off to a finish in the April/May window and a general discussion took place re a preference for say two groups of four teams in the Club Championships or maybe a loser’s round rather than the present straight knockout system. There was general agreement that the Minor age group should be reduced to Under 17 for competitions within the county to allow senior fixtures have a free run and it was suggested that an U19 competition be introduced to cater for the 18 to 19 age group.
There was a lot of discussion on the availability of county players - particularly in April - for both training and games.
Altogether this was a worthwhile exercise and we will have to wait and see if there are positive changes proposed for the November meeting.
