Senior Football Championship - Round 2
Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Round-up
Dr Crokes 7-17 St Brendans 0-16
Dr Crokes are showing no sign of loosening their grip on the Bishop Moynihan Cup following this comprehensive defeat of St Brendans at Lewis Road this evening, With Colm Cooper, Daithí Casey and Kieran O’Leary – they scored 6-10 between them – in flying form the All Ireland champions advanced to the quarter finals with ease and they had this match in the bag at the break when they led by 19 points. More good news for Dr Crokes and indeed Kerry supporters was the appearance of Johnny Buckley who was introduced as a substitute at the break.
Ivan Parker, who was in great scoring form for the visitors, opened the scoring in the first minute but Crokes soon began to move through the gears and Shane Murphy’s point in the 13th minute had them 7 points to 2 ahead a lead that would have been greater had Eoghan O’Brien not brought off a fine save from Colm Cooper a minute earlier. Parker pointed again but then Daithí Casey converted a penalty for Crokes and three minutes later Colm Cooper had his first goal after a good run from Gavin White. Cooper was in for his second five minutes later and then the maestro set up Gavin White for another major four minutes from the break at which stage the score read 4-12 to 0-5.
Shane Murphy made his second fine save of the game right on the restart and again it was Ivan Parker who opened the scoring but the homeside were quickly into the groove again and Kieran O’Leary had the fifth goal six minutes in. Four minutes later it was the turn of Daithí Casey again for his second goal but in fairness to St Brendans they never threw in the towel and with Jack Barry doing Trojan work at midfield, the likes of Cillian Fitzgerald and the magnificent Ivan Parker kept picking off the points at the other end. Kieran O’Leary had the seventh goal of the game with ten to go but there was still time for some fine points from Jack Barry and Ivan Parker who finished with 8 points to his credit.
So Dr Crokes are through to the Quarter finals once again and St Brendans will now go forward to Round 3 where they will play one of the Round 2B winners.
