Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship – Qualifier
St Brendans 6-24 Shannon Rangers 1-8
As the scoreline would suggest, this was a romp in the Park for St Brendans in this Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Qualifier game at a sparsely attended Austin Stack Park this evening. Jim Cremin did have a goal in the third minute for a makeshift Shannon Rangers side but that was about as good as it got for the North Kerry men though they did try for all they were worth for three quarters of a very one sided encounter and no fault could be laid at the door of any of those who lined out on the night.
St Brendans’ response to that Ranger’s goal was to reel off 1-7 without reply in the next 13 minutes – the goal from Ivan Parker after a lovely set up by Jack Barry – and they passed up a number of other goal scoring opportunities with Sean Dee in the Rangers goal being particularly impressive. The impressive Darragh Sheehy had two good points for Rangers and had another from a free befor the break but in between the winners struck for another 1-4 with Parker getting his second goal of the game after good wotrk by Alan O’Donoghue.
At the break it was 2-12 to 1-3 and Rangers lost Kerry player Shane Enright to a thigh strain for the second half.
St Brendans passed up 4 chances of putting the ball in the net soon after the restart as Sean Dee again came to his side’s rescue along with stout defending from his full back line. Jack Foley, Cormac Linnane and Ian Mannix pointed for Rangers but Ivan Parker got in for his and St Brendans’ third goal in the 36th minute and when James Duggan got a 4th major in the 45th minute the winners led by 4-18 to 1-6. It was truly game over at that stage but St Brendans were not finished yet and had further majors from David O’Callaghan and Stefan Okunbar to set up a meeting with Kilcummin on Saturday evening next.
