U21 Q Final: Spa 2-7 Kenmare District 1-11 2017-06-28 23:02:00

Spa 2-7 Kenmare District 1-11

Kenmare District overcame Spa by the narrowest of margins in this Under 21 Quarter Final tie in Spa and the home side will rue a number of missed opportunities in the opening half. Kenmare started well and with points from Stephen O'Sullivan (2), John Mark Foley, Tadhg Sugrue and Killian Spillane they took a 0-5 to 0-0 lead in the opening quarter, Spa with a total of seven chances wide of the post.

John Mark Foley did get close on goal but his effort rolled wide and Spa replied immediately with David Spillane's goal shot first and then Niall McCarthy's shot both blocked by the Kenmare keeper Ray O'Shea. It was a full 28 minutes before Spa had a point on the board, their only score of the opening half - a long high ball from Evan Cronin. At half time Kenmare District were the happier side, leading 0-5 to 0-1.

Spa had the best possible start to the second half with three points in quick succession by Evan Cronin before Niall McCarthy won the ball outfield and played to Evan Cronin who passed to Corey Doyle and the ball rattled the net. Another quick point from Evan Cronin and Spa now led 1-5 to 0-5 just five minutes into the half. John Hallissey replied with a point for Kenmare after his first attempt was stopped by goalie David Carroll. Carroll had a second great block moments later before Kerry Junior team-mates Evan Cronin and Killian Spillane swapped further points. Killian Spillane kicked the best score of the day with a brilliant sideline effort and Stephen O'Sullivan added another to draw the sides level going into the final quarter.

Spa suddenly had the momentum again and this time it was David Spillane who hit the back of the net for the home side. Both sides had missed opportunities before a scramble in the Spa goalmouth led to an own-goal and levelled the game again, with just five minutes left on the clock. Two superb points from Killian Spillane edged Kenmare District ahead as a late free from Evan Cronin was not enough, and with a one point win it is Kenmare District who go through to the semi-finals.
