Ballyduff are Co. Champions for the 25th Time!
Ballyduff 4-13 Lixnaw 1-19
By Samuel Mansfield and Diarmuid Kearney
Ballyduff are the Garvey’s Supervalu Senior County Hurling Champions for 2017 after the Duffers won by 3 points in a thrilling replay in Austin Stack Park, Tralee on Sunday afternoon.
The first chance of the game was given to Shane Conway but unlike last week, Conway pulled it wide. The miss was punished very quickly as a minute later, Liam Boyle drove a high ball into the square from halfway and Aidan Boyle, who had started in at full forward, caught it well and struck it low beyond Martin Stackpoole into the back of the net to give Ballyduff an early lead.
Lixnaw responded to the goal within a minute through Ricky Heffernan who pointed from play and the quickfire start to the game continued as Ballyduff pointed through Daniel O’Carroll after 5 minutes to retake that 3-point lead. Lixnaw pointed once more from play through Brendan Brosnan to reduce the deficit once more.
We finally got a few minutes to breathe after the lightning start, however, with ten minutes gone Ballyduff displayed the long ball tactic once more as a high ball knocked in towards Aidan Boyle resulted in a good Stackpoole save however Aidan was quick to pounce on it and knocked the rebound into the bottom right hand corner of the net, his second goal of the game coming after just ten minutes!
Ballyduff’s amazing start continued as all 3 Boyle brothers combined in midfield before Liam knocked one over the bar from roughly half way out and Mikey Boyle continued this by adding his first of the game. Lixnaw kept in touch as a Brendan Brosnan “65” and a John Buckley point reduced the deficit back to 5 points.
Lixnaw were back in the game shortly afterwards as Heffernan grabbed the sliotar in midfield and burst through the defence before slicing the ball off his hurl however it somehow managed to roll past P.J. O’Gorman to the Ballyduff net. Game on once more.
Lixnaw carried this momentum forward as Michael Conway added 2 frees from the 65 and 30 metre marks respectively to level the game with 20 mins on the clock.
The Lixnaw comeback was short lived however as Jack Goulding got his first point of the game to put Ballyduff one point up. Michael Conway however added another free to equalise once more. End to end stuff!
Lixnaw took the lead after 22 minutes for the first time as Buckley got his second of the afternoon. This score for score theme continues as Daniel O’Carroll got his second score to level the game again and Aidan Boyle got his first point of the game before Padraig finally opened his tally after his wonderful display last week to give the Duffers a 2 point lead.
Once more Michael Conway pointed to keep Lixnaw within touching distance but just afterwards as the minute of added time was announced another long ball was sent in to Aidan Boyle who caught well and smashed it into the top corner to complete a first half hat-trick!
Michael Conway pointed once more from a free just before the whistle to make it a 3 point game at Half Time. Ballyduff 3:07 1:10 Lixnaw
The second half opened with a similar pattern as Shane Conway opened the second half scoring to reduce the Ballyduff lead once more. James Flaherty, a half time substitute popped up to make it a one point game shortly after.
The 34th minute of the game saw another Ballyduff goal opportunity however Daniel O’Carroll’s effort was well saved down low by Martin Stackpoole who pushed it wide for a “65”, subsequently missed by Padraig Boyle.
Just a minute later Ballyduff did manage to get their 4th goal of the game as Mikey Boyle burst through on goal, miss hit but the sliotar fell to brother Aidan, who gave it back to Mikey who smashed the ball past Stackpoole. Ballyduff once more lead by 4 points
That lead was extended to 5 quickly after as Aidan Boyle was dragged down and Padraig pointed the resulting free. Another Conway free just before Jack O’Sullivan pointed for Ballyduff kept this tit for tat scoring going in the second half.
Michael Conway pointed two morefree’s in the 41st and 42nd minute to make it a 3 point game once more. Padraig Boyle made it 4 once more from a free in after another long ball towards Aidan Boyle.
45 minutes in. Shane Conway got through on goal and was taken down by Padraig O’Grady who was given his marching orders after a second yellow card. Michael Conway pointed the resulting free.
Daniel O’Carroll grabbed his 3rd point of the day after sloppy play in midfield by Lixnaw. Conway made the gap 3 quickly after from another free in. Ballyduff fouling and Conway pointing seemed to be the theme of the day.
Back down the other end Padraig Boyle got his 4th score from frees to once more keep the Ballyduff scoreboard ticking. Boyle was then blocked well by Shane Conway who sprinted up the other side of the pitch to make it a 3 point game….again.
Brendan Brosnan got his second score from a “65” to reduce the Duffers lead to 2 points going into the 3 minutes of added time.
In the 61st minute Gary O’Brien, a second half sub got under a high ball and offloaded to Daniel O’Carroll who pointed to a rapturous roar from the Ballyduff supporters who had travelled to Tralee.
Shane Conway saw a last gasp effort go wide as the ref blew the whistle to crown Ballyduff county champions for the 25th time!

It’s the Boyle Bros. Show as Ballyduff reign supreme in Replay
By John O’Leary PRO
Championship replays, more often than not, fail to outshine a good drawn encounter but this Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship Final Replay proved to be the exception as Ballyduff claimed their 25th title at a well attended Austin Stack Park (Att 2,922) this afternoon. It is always unfair to pick out one individual from a winning team and heap all the praise on that lone recipient of a Man of the Match or such an accolade so on this occasion we can justifiably pick a group of brothers – four in all! The Boyle brothers from Ballyduff stamped their authority on this game from as early as the third minute when Liam Boyle’s long delivery was caught superbly by Aidan and finished to the net and if Padraig Boyle was Man of the Match with 2-11 in the drawn game then this time round it was Aidan’s turn.
You did not have to have any coaching awards to figure out that the long ball into the Lixnaw goalmouth was a tactic that Ballyduff were going to employ time and time again. Aidan got his second major in the 10th minute when brother, Padraig’s shot was well saved by excellent Lixnaw netminder Martin Stackpoole and just for good measure Liam and Mikey added points.
At this stage, 2-3 to 0-2 ahead, it looked as if Ballyduff were going to have it all their own way but Lixnaw, who were forced to line out without the influential John Griffin due to a thumb injury, came back strongly and outscored their rivals by 1-6 to 0-1 in the next 13 minutes with the goal coming after a fine Ricky Heffernan run in the 17th minute. Lixnaw were running at their opponents and drawing frees – the free count in that first half was 10 to 1 in favour of Lixnaw – and Ballyduff were living off that early brace of goals but they did strike back for three points between the 25th and the 28th minutes to double their points tally. When Aidan Boyle completed his hat-trick on the call of half time- yet again from another high delivery – Ballyduff were a goal to the good at the break.
Lixnaw started brightly in the second period with Shane Conway and sub James Flaherty – who brought an improvement up front – pointing but then Mike Boyle set off on a great run, got a return pass from Aidan and the ball was in the Lixnaw net for a 4th time. It was tit for tat thereafter with Lixnaw threatening to score a goal on a few occasions but never managing to do so to ignite their challenge. Mikey Boyle was by now sitting in front of his defence and playing a sweeper role to perfection and he needed to given that they were down to 14 men from the 45th minute after Padraig O’Grady received a second yellow from no nonsense referee Cathal McAllister. With just three points between the sides and with a numerical advantage Lixnaw seemed to have Ballyduff there for the taking but while Brendan Brosnan’s “65” in the 60th minute reduced the gap to 2 points, they never looked like overhauling their neighbours and Daniel O’Carroll picked off his 4th point of the afternoon to cap a fine display by himself and his team.
And so the Neilus Flynn Cup was presented to winning captain Mikey Boyle by the Chairman of the County Committee Tim Murphy while Timmy Moynihan, representing Garvey’s Supervalu, presented the man of the Match award and Skelligs Hotel Voucher to Ballyduff’s Aidan Boyle.
Storm Ophelia will hardly dampen the Bonfires in Ballyduff tonight!!

Ballyduff and Lixnaw to do it all over again next Sunday
Ballyduff 2-15 Lixnaw 1-18
By Diarmuid Kearney and Sam Mansfield
The 2017 Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry County Senior Hurling Championship will be decided on another day after Ballyduff and Lixnaw played out an entertaining draw in Austin Stack Park in Tralee this afternoon..
It took just 15 seconds for the first score of the final as Padraig Boyle created an opening on the right and managed to score a fantastic point for Ballyduff. Just 30 seconds later Lixnaw were back in this game as John Griffin broke through to level proceedings.
After the breathless start it looked like we were down for an epic encounter and as the clock struck the second minute so did Lixnaw’s Shane Conway, who goaled on the second attempt after his first attempt was well saved by PJ O’Gorman.
Ballyduff were looking to respond quickly after the early set back and two points from Padraig Boyle had the deficit reduced to one point before Shane Conway added a free to leave the score 1-2 to 0-03 with just over 10 minutes played.
The referee was called into action in the 12th minute as he awarded a penalty for Ballyduff as Mikey Boyle was dragged down in the area and his brother Podge stepped up and calmly slotted home to give Ballyduff a narrow one point advantage.
Neither side gave an inch midway through the half with the game nip and tuck, but it was Lixnaw who were ahead after 24 minutes as Shane Conway managed to add to the scoreboard putting his side a point in front.
Lixnaw lead late on in the half but a fantastic free from Padraig Boyle in the 32nd minute from 60 plus yards out made sure neither side had an advantage at the break as the scoreboard read 1-08 to 1-08.
From the restart Lixnaw captain John Buckley pointed from play as they looked to try build an early lead and preserve it the best they could.
Padraig Boyle was having a superb game for the Duffers as he chipped away with 1-7 in the first half and was a key asset in the Ballyduff attack, Boyle would score two points before combining with brother Aidan and sent a low shot which Linxaw keeper Martin Stackpoole saved but it just managed to deflect and go over the line.
After Boyle’s second Lixnaw again needed to find a way back into the game to keep their title hopes alive and in the 41st minute the teams were level as scores from Shane Conway, Raymond Galvin and the last from Jeremy McKenna gave the Lixnaw supporters renewed hope that they could walk away as Champions.
Kerry hurling is alive and well as the remaining 15 minutes were an enthralling classic and you never knew who was going to be heading away with the cup. Ballyduff were just edging it by a point on the 50th minute as the ever present Padraig Boyle sent over another long range free that sent the duffers into a frenzy and they seemed to have sealed it In the 53rd minute as Jack Goulding and Boyle both pointed giving signs that the curse over Lixnaw was still present as the Duffers looked to be in top gear.
Brendan Brosnan reduced the lead to two points in the 56th minute as the heart rates in Austin Stack Park started to palpitate off the charts, with Lixnaw praying for late drama.
Three minutes was added on from the sideline as Lixnaw were pressing to try and claim a replay and they could have won the game with a late goal after PJ O’Gorman denied the original shot which rebounded and smacked the inside of the post and then managed to roll across the end line for a 65 which Shane Conway converted.
Deep into stoppage time both sides were battling for the win and Lixnaw got their chance to level matters when Shane Conway stepped up as cool as ice and put over the sideline cut to send the game to a replay.
Replay set for next Sunday October 15th in Austin Stack Park in Tralee.

A draw was a fitting Result
By John O’Leary PRO
For the brilliantly executed equaliser alone, a draw was a fitting result to this high quality and exciting Garveys Supervalu senior hurling championship final at Austin Stack Park today. Level at half time, level at full time, and a few more time in between, these two sides threw everything at each other throughout an enthralling 60 minutes or so of hurling and Kerry senior Hurling manager Fintan O’Connor must have been impressed with what he saw as he kept a watching brief.
Shane Conway’s goal early on must have given Lixnaw a great boost but they were unable to build on that score as Padraig Boyle simply took over for Ballyduff. Boyle had three points and converted a penalty as Ballyduff surged 1-5 to 1-3 ahead by the 20th minute. At that stage there seemed to be just one team in it but in fairness to Lixnaw they never lost their composure and soon levelled it up in a good spell for the green and gold side. They even went ahead after good points from the two Conways but at the break it was back to level pegging and Lixnaw must have been the happier side going in given that they had withstood tremendous Ballyduff pressure.
It was the Padraig Boyle show once again at the start of the second half as he rattled off 1-2 - the goal coming after a quick-silver pass from brother Aidan in the3rd minute of the half. To their credit, Lixnaw’s response was instant and they hit four points in a seven minute spell to tie the game by the 42nd minute; a classic Shane Conway point from the wing being the highlight. In hindsight, a point-blank save by Martin Stackpoole five minutes later probably kept Lixnaw in the tie and it was still level with ten to go. Lixnaw lost their shape for a while and had gone defensive by this stage and anything cleared down field was being returned with interest. When Boyle pointed two placed balls from distance and Goulding added a trade mark point from the wing on the run the writing seemed to be on the wall for Lixnaw.
The ribbons were not on the Cup yet however. Shane Conway had a good point and then Michael Conway hit a pile driver off the butt of the post with the rebound being whipped against the other post before going out for a “65” which Shane Conway pointed. With time up, the recently named Under 21 “B” Hurler of the year planted a sideline cut straight over the black spot to force a replay and in truth few could have quibbled with the result.
Replay on Sunday next: The replay of the Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship final will be played in Austin Stack Park on Sunday next at a time to be decided by the CCC at it’s meeting on Monday night.

County Kerry Senior Hurling Championship- semi-final:
It’s a Boyle over as Ballyduff stage dramatic second half comeback to knock-out holders
Ballyduff 1-17 Kilmoyley 0-16
By Murt Murphy
A second half metamorphous of the sporting kind turned a lame Kerry SHC semi-final at the Austin Stack Park Tralee between three in a row seeking Kilmoyley and a written off Ballyduff side into a thunderous second half that saw Ballyduff produce an incredible comeback.
The first half was a sleep fest as Daniel Collins with nine points, all but two from placed balls and a point from Sean Maunsell had Kilmoyley in cruise mode as they led 0-10 to 0-4 at the interval with Podge Boyle with two frees, and one each from Jack O’Sullivan and Daniel O’Carroll barely keeping Ballyduff in the game.
Ballyduff mentor Liam Ross provided an explanation post match on how a team could appear to meekly exiting the championship to a side that went for Kilmoyley’s jugular and possibly helped produce one of the best second half of hurling seen at the venue for years
“ Everybody had us written off that we were old and we were past it but we had good faith in our guys because that had prepared hard and did a lot of work to prepare for today. But it was 0-10 to 0-4 at half time and look they got eight frees and we knew that it was frees that was going to kill us in the finish unless we became more disciplined. So we said to the lads at half time if we could keep the free countdown to maybe four or so they would struggle to score and so it transpired as I think they only scored 2 in the second half and we said if we can reach 1-15 we will win the game”
But not alone did Ballyduff stop conceding frees but their intensity levels increased – why did Liam Ross think a team could change from one half to the other “ I think we were standing off Kilmoyley in the opening half and giving their players too much respect. We knew we had the players who could drive it on and get stuck in and win most of the physical battles. So we knew by upping our intensity that we would be right in there with a shout. It was I would think even for neutrals the best second half of hurling in the county for years.
While Kilmoyley were battling away in the second half we had that bit more intensity and when we were going for the ball, we were getting the breaks in the second half. Look, I suppose our physique probably told in the end. The subs made a difference with Gary O’Brien using his physique inside and Paul Carroll came on and he won the break for the first point we got in the second half. I would say that it was Paud Costello’s best game of hurling he had for years and it was great considering the injuries he has been plagued with. We felt we should have beaten Kilmoyley the first day in last year’s county final but they were better in the second game and over the two games. So people were writing us off even in our own parish so the lads have been targeting Kilmoyley since then whether in a final or semi- but we are delighted to have won”
The Duffers outscored Kilmoyley 1-13 to 0-6 in the second half was Podge Boyle, Mikey Boyle, Jack Goulding, Paud Costello and Jack O’Sullivan transformed the contest and Kilmoyley were helpless to stop the onslaught.
Podge Boyle’s 35th minute goal ignited Ballyduff and they hurled as if their lives were at stake with Boyle adding another six points, Jack Goulding fired over two, while Mikey Boyle chipped in with an inspirational score as Ballyduff produced the best thirty minutes of hurling of this year’s championship
Scorers: Ballyduff: P Boyle (1-9, 6 frees), J Goulding, J O’Sullivan, D O’Carroll (0-2 each), A O’Carroll and M Boyle (0-1 each)

Conway shoots down 13 man St Brendan’s
Lixnaw 1-13 St Brendan’s Ardfert 2-8
By Murt Murphy
Lixnaw advanced to meet neighbours Ballyduff after this high intensity SHC semi-final played at the Austin Stack Park on Sunday afternoon but it took a combination of some excellent scores from the Conway brothers and two sending’s off to see them over the winning line.
St Brendan’s looked the better side for much of the opening half following a 4thminute goal from Cian Hussey and points from John Egan (2), Hussey, Tom Moloney, Brendan O’Connor and David Griffin as they led 1-6 to 0-5 at the interval.
Shane Conway contributed 0-4 but saw his penalty attempt brilliantly saved by Darren Delaney while wing back Brendan Brosnan scored a beauty from play.
St Brendan’s should have been further ahead at half time because Lixnaw appeared flat early something their manager Mark Foley admitted to post match
“Look to be fair we did not play well all through the game and we looked a bit off the pace and I suppose you can do all the training you want, play all the challenges you want but the reality is that we have not played championship for a long – long time and that probably showed today. We were probably a good bit off the pace but to be fair the players took that on board and they still showed great character in the second half against the wind to get over the line”
Foley admitted that injuries were a problem in the lead-up to the game and their main injury concern Mike Conway just about got the nod to start but his three points proved crucial. “Mike Conway came up with three top class scores in the second half and one of them he was not even looking as he hit it over his shoulder which was a great score. Mike has trained with us for the last three weeks and has been struggling and it was touch and go up until today whether he would play or not. He did the warm up and said he felt ok so we felt we were better off starting him than bringing him on and taking him off again if he broke down. So thankfully Mike came up today with some great scores and I am delighted for him really”
Two early Shane Conway points, one a free and the other a thing of beauty after a build up involving his brother Mike and Rickie Heffernan.
But St Brendan’s hit back 38th minute after a defensive slip saw John Egan get in behind the Lixnaw defense and buried it to far corner of the net and it appeared to have given St Brendan’s the edge as they led 2-6 to 0-7 but when Kerry defender Rory Horgan got a red card a minute later after the umpires spotted an off the ball incident with Ricky Heffernan, St Brendan’s world fell apart and Lixnaw took over.
The Conway brother’s Shane and Michael closed the gap and then in the 49thminute John Buckley’s long delivery was flicked to the net by Brian McAuliffe and Lixnaw were a point in front. Mike Conway from a Jeremy McKenna assist fired one over with his back to goal and then disaster for St Brendan’s that damaged them below the waterline.
Kevin Orpen picked up a second yellow for St Brendan’s it was game over as John Griffin and Brendan Brosnan shone in the closing minutes.
Despite frees from John Egan and a Kevin Skinner point, Brendan Brosnan and Mike Conway responded for Lixnaw and despite late pressure the extra men, meant Lixnaw were able to drop players back and the goal St Brendan’s needed never came.
Scorers:
Lixnaw: S Conway (0-8, 6 frees), B McAuliffe (1-0), M Conway (0-3), B Brosnan (0-2)
St Brendan’s: J Egan (1-3, 2 frees), C Hussey (1-1), D Griffin, T Moloney and K Skinner and B O’Connor (0-1 each)

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship Round 3 Replay
St Brendans 1-22
Abbeydorney 2-18 AET
St Brendans qualified for the semi finals of the Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship following a dramatic extra time victory over a luckless Abbeydorney side at Austin Stack Park this afternoon.
With time almost up in normal time and the sides deadlocked on 15 points apiece, Ronan Donovan seemed to have given the underdogs a famous victory when he whipped the ball over the goal line for what looked like the match-winning score but straight from the puck-out St Brendans cut through the middle and David Griffin despatched the ball to the O’Dorney net to send the game into extra time.
That first ten minutes of additional time was riddled with good scores with first Kevin Skinner getting a brace for the winners and Nigel Roche replying with two frees for O’Dorney; John Egan pointed two frees for St Brendans and then David Egan scrambled the ball home for O’Dorney to leave them 2-17 to 1-19 ahead at the break. In a tense final period John Egan and Cian Hussey pointed St Brendans in front only for Nigel Roche to level it up again before, with almost the last puck of the game, Tom Moloney became the St Brendans hero with a last gasp point from out the field to clinch a semi final place against Lixnaw.
The game opened with the sides sharing scores throughout the first quarter with Nigel Roche pointing four frees for O’Dorney and Kevin Skinner and Cian Hussey getting a brace each for Brendans to leave the score 5 points all. Two pointed frees from Roche and a good point from James O’Connor had O’Dorney three clear and they maintained that advantage to the break at which stage the score stood at 10 points to 7.
John Egan and Cian Hussey had quick points for Brendans on the resumption but in what was a good spell for them, O’Dorney added four points without reply to lead by 14 points to 9 eleven minutes into the new half with Darren Delaney also having to well from Stevie O’Sullivan. Brendans fought their way back into the game with points by Hussey, Egan and Skinner to one in reply from Nigel Roche for O’Dorney who still led by 15 points to 12 after 20 minutes of the half. Two frees from John Egan either side of a David Griffin score saw the sides on level terms before that late goal drama sent the game to Extra Time.
Scorers:
St Brendans: John Egan 0-10 ( 9 frees), Kevin Skinner and Cian Hussey 0-5 each, David Griffin 1-1, Tom Moloney 0-1 each.
Abbeydorney: Nigel Roche 0-12 (frees), David Egan and Ronan Donovan 1-1 each, Mike Hanafin, James O’Connor, PJ Kane, Brian O’Leary 0-1 each

2017 Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Co. Senior Hurling Championship Round 3
St. Brendan’s 1 - 12
Abbeydorney 1- 12
A dramatic finish saw St. Brendan’s and Abbeydorney finish all square at Austin Stack Park on Saturday. The Ardfert side was up 5 points, 1 – 12 to 0 – 10 after 58 minutes and looked likely to progress. However a storming finish by Abbeydorney yielded 1 – 2 without reply and sent the tie to a replay.
All this additional scoring happened during the 9 minutes of additional time called by referee, Dermot Kirwan. This was mainly due to an injury to a St. Brendan’s player mid-way through the half which resulted in a long stoppage to play. Firstly a Nigel Roche free reduced the deficit to 4 points in the 61st minute. Then a long ball into the square was finished to the net by David Egan in the 64th minute to leave just a point between the sides. The St. Brendan’s goalkeeper, Darren Delaney, got injured during this play but he was treated and managed to stay on the field. Abbeydorney won the next puck out and Roche obliged to send the ball between the posts for the equaliser in the 66th minute. Tim Hannafin then took over between the posts for the Ardfert side and his puck out was strongly contested out field, at which stage the full time whistle went, to the relief of all present.
These last few minutes redeemed what was a rather pedestrian affair throughout. Scores were level three times during the first half, after which the teams were locked together at 4 points apiece.
They were level again in the 41st and 45th minutes before St. Brendan’s, with a Tim Hannafin goal and a Kevin Skinner point, put them up 4 with 9 minutes remaining. Substitute Padraig O’Mahony made it 5 up on 58 minutes and they looked well on their way. However the never say die attitude of Abbeydorney came to the fore and they deservedly managed to get a replay.
Scorers:
St. Brendan’s: John Egan (0 – 4, 3f), Tim Hannafin (1 - 0), Kevin Skinner (0 – 2), Tom Moloney (0 – 1), Eric Leen (0 -1), David Griffin (0 – 1), Kevin Hannafin (0 – 1), Padraig O’Mahony (0 – 1), Cian Hussey (0 - 1).

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship - Round 2A
Kilmoyley 0-19
St Brendans 0-14
After a game that rarely reached the heights expected from these two sides, Kilmoyley joined Lixnaw in the semi finals of the Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship following a deserved five points victory over near rivals St Brendans at Austin Stack Park tonight. Daniel Collins emerged as the Kilmoyley hero scoring 14 points (12 frees) and it was his accuracy that punished every indiscretion by St Brendans. The champions were the better side for long periods and it was only after they were reduced to 14 men early in the second half that St Brendans began to play with the passion normally associated with them.
St Brendans had first use of the wind but it was Kilmoyley who started better with Collins getting their first five points (2 from play) and they led by 5 points to 3 after an uneventful 20 minutes of play. Cian Hussey with his second reduced the deficit to the minimum as the Ardfert side enjoyed a good spell approaching the break but good points from Sean Maunsell and Adrian Royle and a couple of frees from Collins saw the winners go in at the break 9 to 6 in front – Stephen Leen and a subdued John Egan from a free hitting the target for St Brendans who had 6 wides when wind assisted in that half.
John Egan and Daniel Collins swapped pointed frees on the resumption but then St Brendans were dealt a blow when Jerry Wallace received a second yellow just five minutes into the new half. The sides swapped points throughout the next ten minutes as St Brendans showed a gradual improvement and it was 14 to 10 at the three quarter stage. Two good points by Cian Hussey wither side of a super score by John Egan left just a point between the sides by the 52nd minute but then Egan was wide from a scoreable free and Hussey missed from the wing and that equaliser never came. In the remaining time Kilmoyley were on top again and outscored their rivals by 5 points to 1 with Daniel Collins accounting for three of those from frees to run out deserving winners.
Scorers:
Kilmoyley: Daniel Collins 0-14 (12 frees), Adrian Royle 0-2, Sean Maunsell, James Godley and Robert Collins 0-1 each.
St Brendans: John Egan 0-5 (4 frees), Cian Hussey 0-4, Stephen Leen 0-2, Tom Moloney, David Griffin, and Darren Dineen 0-1 each..

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship - Round 2B
Causeway 2-18
Crotta O’Neills 0-12
A goal by Muiris Delaney eight minutes from time finally killed off the Crotta O’Neills challenge in Round 2B of the Garvey's SHC at Austin Stack Park tonight and ensured that Causeway advance to Round 3 where they will play Ballyduff. Even at that stage of the game Causeway had begun to turn the screw against a battling Crotta side who tired visibly having scrapped for every loose ball with fierce intensity during the opening three quarters of the game. The losers were too reliant on Shane Nolan however and Causeway, with a far better scoring spread, went on to win by a 12 points margin that flattered them a little.
Causeway had first use of the lively breeze and the sides swapped points twice in the first five minutes and we sat back expecting a possible score-fest. It did not come as Crotta’s work ethic thwarted many of Causeways scoring efforts. The sides were still level on 4 points each at the end of the first quarter with Shane Nolan getting two good scores for Crotta, one from a sideline cut. Keith Carmody pointed for Causeway and then they managed to mess up a real goal chance when Stephen Murphy had Carmody all on his on in front of goal but elected to go it alone without success. Shane Nolan pointed two frees as half time approached but if he did, Jason Leahy did likewise for Causeway who led by 7 points to 6 at the break.
Shane Nolan pointed another free on the resumption but then Causeway struck three points in as many minutes from Goggin, Harty and Carmody to put them three clear. A great pointed free by Shane Nolan from over 100 meters left the score reading 12 points to 10 at the three quarter stage but points from Tommy Casey and Stephen Murphy either side of another Nolan free left the scoreboard reading 14 to 11 with ten to go. Causeway were beginning to make inroads at this stage and when Muiris Delaney goaled in the 52nd minute it was a game changing score. Jason Leahy (2) and sub Paul McGrath pointed the winners further in front and when Keith Carmody goaled two minutes from time the game was up for Crotta who now exit the competition.
Scorers: Causeway: Keith Carmody 1-4, Jason Leahy 0-5 (4 fr), Muiris Delaney 1-0, Tommy Casey and Colum Harty and Paul McGrath (1 free) 0-2 each, Anthony Fealy, Stephen Murphy and Stephen Goggin 0-1 each.
Crotta O’Neills: Shane Nolan 0-10 (7 frees, 1 sideline), Padraig Quille and Tom Cronin 0-1 each

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship, Round 2A
Lixnaw 3-19 Ballyduff 1-16
In a game that will be best remembered for the high level of marksmanship, particularly from Ballyduff’s Padraig Boyle, Lixnaw it was who secured themselves a semi final place following a fine second half performance.
Ballyduff got the better start with three points in the first five minutes but in the 10th minute James Flaherty got in behind their defence to score Lixnaws first goal and the sides were on level terms at the end of the first quarter 1-3 to 0-6. Michael Conway added two points and then Shane Conway availed of a mixup in the Ballyduff goalmouth to put his side 2-5 to 0-7 in front by the 22nd minute. Ballyduff – and the game – needed a goal and Padraig Boyle supplied it when he finished to the net after Gary O’Brien came in along the endline two minutes later. At the break it was 2-8 to 1-9 for the winners.
The sides swapped points three times on the resumption and then in a good spell for Lixnaw, the winners scored 1-3 without reply, the goal from Jason Wallace after the ball broke behind the Ballyduff cover at the three quarter stage to put Lixnaw 3-14 to 1-12 in front. Padraig Boyle from play and placed balls did his best to stem the Lixnaw tide but even his outstanding contribution of 1-14 (7 frees, 2 65s)was not enough to prevent Lixnaw getting a semi final place. Michael Conway with 10 points (7 frees) was Lixnaw’s chief marksman.
Scorers: Lixnaw: Michael Conway 0-10 (7 frees), Shane Conway 1-5, James Flaherty 1-2, Jason Wallace 1-0, Cathal Sheehy and Ricky Heffernan 0-1 each. Ballyduff: Padraig Boyle 1-14 (7 frees, 2 65s, David Goulding and John Hussey 0-1 each.

Abbeydorney 2-13 Ballyheigue 0-13
Abbeydorney knocked Ballyheigue out of this year’s championship and secured themselves a Round 3 place following a six points winning margin over Abbeydorney at Austin Stack Park today. With James O’Connor in fine form the winners got off to the perfect start leading by 1-4 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter with O’Connor helping himself to 2 points and Niall O’Mahony latching onto a loose ball to score the goal in the 13th minute. Ronan Donovan found the net six minutes later after Nigel Roche went short from a free and O’Dorney went on to lead by 2-7 to 0-1 before the seasiders upped the tempo with three points from Philip Lucid, Adrian Flahive and Pa Regan to bring their total to 0-4 at the break with Lixnaw having 2-8 to their credit.
Four points from Nigel Roche and two in reply from Philip Lucid saw the winners lead by 2-12 to 0-6 by the end of the first quarter but in fairness to Ballyheigue they did not throw in the towel and they hit 5 points on the trot to put a more respectable look on the scoreboard and in the process restore their pride but Abbeydorney it is who qualify for Round 3.
Scorers: Abbeydorney: Nigel Roche 0-8 (1 free), Ronan Donovan 1-1, James O’Connor 0-3, Niall O’Mahony 1-9, Daniel O’Leary 0-1. Ballyheigue: Philip Lucid 0-7 (4 frees), Jason Griffin and Diarmuid Walsh 0-2 each, Adrian Flahive, Pa Regan 0-1 each.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship Round 1 Replay
St Brendan’s 1-13 Causeway 2-7
At the second time of asking St Brendan’s finally overcame Causeway to progress to Round 2A of the Garvey’s Senior Hurling Championship but not before they were absolutely put to ‘the pin of their collar’ by an opposition who were reduced to fourteen players for the last twenty minutes or so of this entertaining replay.
Aided by the breeze in the opening half Sean Leahy pounced for a well taken goal to give Causeway the perfect start. Keith Carmody added a point but Brendan’s responded with four points in a row from to leave the sides level after eight minutes. Then in the 14th minute, corner forward, Stephen Murphy, struck for Causeway’s second goal after a mixup in the Brendans defence.
Causeway’s best period of the game followed with Mark Murphy, Thomas Casey, Anthony Fealy and Paul McGrath (free) all finding the range and Tadhg Flynn did his bit at the back turning a Tom Moloney effort out for a ‘65’ in added time. John Egan kept St Brendan’s in touch with some excellent points both from play and placed balls and Causeway led by four points at the break, 2-5 to 0-7.
Causeway introduced Brandon Barrett for the start of the second half and he extended their advantage to five points. The second half was ten minutes old before Brendan’s grabbed their first score but then two points inside a minute from Egan narrowed the gap to three. Then in the 42nd minute Causeway’s big full forward, Sean Leahy, received his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card. Still it took a double save by Brendan’s goalie, Darren Delaney, in the 43rd minute to prevent Causeway from increasing their advantage.
An inspirational point from Darren Dineen, from over 90 metres in the 44th minute left just two points separating the sides but fourteen man Causeway continued to put up fierce resistance. Paul McGrath and Egan swopped points from placed balls and a point by Brendan’s midfielder, David Griffin, in the 55th minute cut the deficit to the minimum. Another Egan point from a free, his eight score of the evening, in the 57th minute put the sides on level terms for only the second time.
Finally, though, in the 60th minute wing forward Tim Hannafin struck a ground shot to the net to secure victory.
Brendan’s now meet Kilmoyley in round 2A of the Championship on Saturday July 29th and on the same evening Causeway will face Crotta O’ Neills in round 2B.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship Round 1
Ballyduff 0-13 Abbeydorney 0-12
After what can only be described as a poor game of hurling, a point a minute into injury time by Mikey Boyle gave Ballyduff victory over an Abbeydorney side who deserved extra time at least for the effort they put in against the starting favourites in the final Round 1 game of the Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship at Austin Stack Park this evening.
The story of the first half is easily told: Both sides swapped points twice in the first seven minutes and then we had to wait until the 22nd minute for the next score, a Padraig Boyle free, his second, to put Ballyduff ahead. Points by James O’Connor and a Nigel Roche free put O’Dorney a point to the good at the break; 4 points to 3. Ballyduff had amassed 8 wides by the interval; O’Dorney half of that total.
The scoring improved in the second half – it had to! Nigel Roche extended O’Dorney’s lead from a free and play but Padraig Boyle responded likewise and then the same two swapped frees to leave O’Dorney a point to the good, 7 to 6 by the 37th minute.
Then a good run by Ronan Donovan ended with a penalty to O’Dorney but Ballyduff had a let off when Nigel Roche struck to the right and wide. The sides swapped points twice again with Roche picking off a lovely point from play and Padraig Boyle doing likewise from distance for Ballyduff and it was 9 to 7 at the three quarter stage. Ballyduff then hit three on the trot from the Boyles , Padraig (2 frees) and Aidan but back came O’Dorney with two from James O’Connor to level it up once again. Aidan Boyle and David Egan then swapped points as extra time loomed but in stepped Mike Boyle at the death to win it for Ballyduff.
Scorers: Ballyduff: Padraig Boyle 0-6 (4 frees), John Hussey, Aidan Boyle and Mikey Boyle 0-2 each, David Goulding 0-1. O’Dorney: Nigel Roche 0-6 (4 frees), James O’Connor 0-3, David Egan, Brian O’Leary and Ronan Donovan 0-1 each.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship Round 1
Lixnaw 1-26 Ballyheigue 1-8
It was all too easy for Lixnaw at Austin Stack Park this evening following an 18 points demolition of Ballyheigue in Round 1 of the Garveys Supervalu Senior Hurling Championship. Lixnaw took the game to their opponents from the start, were five points to the good in as many minutes and added six more by the end of the first quarter. Philip Lucid, by far Ballyheigue’s best player, finally opened the scoring for his side in the 18th minute from a free and added another from the same source three minutes later but at the break Lixnaw already had an unassailable lead of 18 points to 2 with Shane Conway accounting forfive5 of those scores.
Ballyheigue saw more of the ball in the second half as Lixnaw visibly eased off and Philip Lucid had two good points from play and another from a free but the sea siders had John Mike Pierce to thank for a series of outstanding saves to keep the Lixnaw forwards at bay. Lucid goaled from a free at the three quarter stage to leave the score 0-21 to 1-5 but Jason Wallace soon cut in from the right to goal for Lixnaw at the other end. Lucid then had a penalty saved by Martin Stackpoole but it mattered little as the Conways, Shane and Michael continued to find the target for Lixnaw and eventually they ended with 15 points between them , Shane accounting for nine of those from play.
Scorers: Lixnaw: Shane Conway 0-9, Michael Conway 0-6 (Frees), Jason Wallace 1-3, John Griffin 0-2, Jeremy McKenna, Liam Mullins, Colin Sheehy, Ricky Heffernan, John Buckley and Conor O’Keeffe 0-1 each. Ballyheigue: Philip Lucid 1-7, 1-4 frees), Diarmuid Walsh 0-1.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Hurling Championship Round 1
Causeway 3-15 St Brendans 2-18
A tremendous game of hurling between two committed sides gave a great start to the hurling championship at Austin Stack Park on Saturday evening. Extra time could not separate the sides and it is only fitting that both will get another bite of the cherry.
Causeway with wind advantage got the better start and a goal by Stephen Murphy when he first time a loose ball to the net had them ahead by 1-2 to 0-1 after nine minutes. St Brendans’ response was good with three points on the trot from John Egan David Griffin and Eric Leen but Anthony Fealy and Colum Harty replied for Causeway to leave the score 1-4 to 0-4 after twenty minutes. Tadhg Flynn saved well from Cian Hussey but a minute later Hussey finished a loose ball to the net and St Brendans led by 1-6 to 1-5 at the break.
The second half opened with a goal for either side with Keith Carmody shooting low from the left in the 32nd minute for causeway and Cian Hussey goaled five minutes later when his deceiving shot found the Causeway net. Brendans added three points in as many minutes and when Paul McGrath and Rory Horgan from long range swapped points it was 210 to 2-6 for St Brendans at the three quarter stage. Points from Anthony Fealy, Jason Leahy and Paul McGrath to one in reply from John Egan saw two points between the sides 2-11 to 2-9 with seven minutes to play.
Causeway then had a great chance when Anthony Fealy was fouled in the square but Colum Harty’s penalty shot was wide on the left and when the excellent Cian Hussey added a point St Brendans were three to the good and time running out. However, up stepped Stephen Goggin to pounce on a loose ball and rattle the St Brendans net to send the game to extra time 2-12 for St Brendan to 3-9 for Causeway who finished the game with 14 men.
Back to 15 for the extra time and Causeway hit two quick points but back came Brendans with three of their own to take the lead before Paul McGrath and Jason Leahy gave Causeway a 3-13 to 2-15 half time lead.
Stephen Goggin added another for Causeway on the resumption but Cian Hussey and David Griffin replied to tie the game once more and there was still time for Cian Hussey and Shane O’Mahony to swap point but the sides could not be separated and they will have to do it all again on a date to be confirmed.
Scorers: Causeway: Stephen Goggin 1-2, Paul McGrath 0-4 (2 Frees), Colum Harty 0-3, Keith Carmody and Stephen Murphy 1-0 each, Jason Leahy and Anthony Fealy 0-2, Brandon Barrett 0-1.
Str Brendans: Cian Hussey 2-6, John Egan 0-6 (2 frees), David Griffin 0-2, Kevin Skinner, Eric Leen, Rory Horgan, Shane O’Mahony0-1 each.

Kilmoyley 3-16 Crotta O’Neills 0-14
Without ever hitting top gear champions Kilmoyley easily accounted for Crotta O’Neills in a disappointing opening game in Austin Stack Park. The scoring was largely from frees with Shane Nolan hitting 10 points from placed balls for Crotta and Daniel Collins outdoing him at the other end with 2-9 1-8 of which was from placed balls. Collins and Nolan shared two points apiece from frees before Collin’s long range free was fumbled and crossed the line for a fortuitous goal in the 11th minute. The swapping of scores continued for the remainder of the half but a couple of good points from Adrian Royle and another from Paudie O’Connor in a rare period of scores from play put Kilmoyley 1-9 to 0-6 in front at the break.
The pattern of the second half was much the same as the first with Nolan and Collins continuing to keep the scoreboard ticking over and it was 1-13 to 0-10 at the three quarter stage. A goal from Maurice O’Connor after a good pass from Daniel Collins finally put daylight between the sides in the 52nd minute and Daniel Collins added another near the end to give the champions an 11 points victory.
Scorers: Kilmoyley: Daniel Collins 2-9 (1-8 frees), Maurice O’Connor 1-2, Adrian Royle 0-3, Jordan Brick, Robert Collins and Paudie O’Connor 0-1 each.
Crotta O’Neills: Shane Nolan 0-11 (10 Frees), Padraig Quille 0-2, Sean Weir 0-1.
