Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Final

    12th Title for Dr Crokes

    DR CROKES 0-17

    SOUTH KERRY 1-12

Dr Crokes have won their 12th Garvey's SuperValu Senior County Championship title after a narrow two point win over South Kerry in Austin Stack’s Park Tralee this afternoon. Crokes now tie top of the Roll of Honour together with Laune Rangers and Austin Stacks all with 12 as the most successful county championship sides. The Bishop Moynihan Cup now visits Lewis Road for the 6th time in 8 years.

The game got off to a fast-paced start as Paul O’Donoghue sent a great pass over the defence to find Brendan O’Sullivan but his shot was saved by Shane Murphy who pulled off a fantastic save to deny the midfield man. After Murphy’s save Bryan Sheehan stepped up to put a “45” over with all the action coming in the 1st minute.

Dr Crokes slowly managed to get a foot in the game as Kieran O’Leary put over two points from play, giving Crokes a one point lead after 8 minutes. Micheál Burns extended Crokes lead with a well taken solo effort ending with a great spin against his marker and sending the ball over the bar.

It was nip and tuck in the early stages and with 14 minutes played Crokes almost raised the green flag but Brian Sugrue made a fantastic block to send Tony Brosnan’s effort over the bar.  Sugrue deserved credit for that  save but Padraig O’Sullivan deserved even more as he made a stunning one handed save to deny Daithi Casey.

Crokes were breathing down the South Kerry necks and Gavin White managed to run up and calmly put over to score. South Kerry were searching for an opening and were gifted an opportunity as Mike Moloney gave away possession and Ian Galvin managed to run through and drive the ball under Shane Murphy low into the bottom corner in the 18th minute.

Ian Galvin’s effort was the first goal conceded by Crokes this championship year, however they managed two quick scores after the defensive blunder to maintain the advantage.

Both sides exchanged scores just before the half time break as Crokes managed to hold a two point, the half time score being South Kerry 0-11 to 1-06 for Dr Crokes.

South Kerry came out after the break and looked to try and sneak the early advantage as Matthew O’Sullivan broke free and hit a low driven shot that was saved spectacularly again by Shane Murphy, his second such save of of the afternoon.

Micheál Burns managed to point before Paul Donoghue and Bryan Sheehan managed to keep South Kerry in the match as they trailed by a point.

Daithí Casey and Bryan Sheehan both exchanged frees as the match turned into an edge of your seat affair as the underdogs South Kerry were putting Crokes to the sword but the winners still led by 0-13 to 1-9 at the three quarter stage.

Johnny Buckley was sent off midway through the half after he was shown a second yellow card for his troubles. Once more after the card it was Daithí Casey and Bryan Sheehan both exchanging frees again as the 14 men of Crokes were hanging on.

The All Ireland champions showed their guile in the final stages of the half as Jordan Kiely and Kieran O’Leary pointed to put Crokes three in front.

South Kerry looked to fight back in the later stages of the half with Ronan Hussey and Bryan Sheehan pointing cutting the deficit to just a point as we went into three minutes of added time. Crokes slowed the pace down eventually carved an opening to give Kieran O’Leary his fourth of the afternoon. Dr Crokes managed to hold on to retain the Bishop Moynihan Cup.

By Sam Mansfield and Diarmuid Kearney

Dr Crokes have advanced to yet another County final after a comprehensive 14 point win over West Kerry in the second game at Fitzgerald Stadium this afternoon.

West Kerry opened proceedings within 30 seconds as Jason Hickson managed to find space and pointed just inside the 21 yard line but beyond that opening score Dr Crokes were in cruise control for most of the opening half following their first score in the 2nd minute when Johnny Buckley pointed from play.

After a 6 minute scoring hiatus Dr Crokes laid their stamp on proceedings as Tony Brosnan pointed before Daithi Casey goaled after a well worked Crokes attack that started from a Colm Cooper free and ended with Tony Brosnan passing to Casey who made no mistake to score.

With 11 minutes gone West Kerry managed two quick-fire back to back scores with Eanna Ó Conchúir and Dara Ó Sé both adding to the scoreboard. Crokes were still comfortable in this game and a point from the old reliable Colm Cooper extended their lead by 3 midway through the opening half.

With 17 minutes  played Dr Crokes were dogged in their pursuit of another County Final as Brian Looney and Gavin White both pointed as Dara Ó Sé managed to get another point for West Kerry in between to try and ignite a comeback.

On 20 minutes  the game could easily have been over as a contest as Daithi Casey managed to run past the West Kerry defence but his high shot cannoned off the crossbar.

Colm Cooper was having an amazing opening half for Crokes and managed two quick fire points and sent in a lovely ball for Tony Brosnan to add to proceedings, however the red mist descended on the West Kerry challenge late in the half when  Jason Hickson was shown a second yellow for a high challenge just before the interval at which stage the scoreboard read  1-09 to  0-05.

Dr Crokes made the dream start to the second half as Colm Cooper cheekily goaled from a quick free which whad been brought forward  for dissent.

The Crokes man made short work of the free spotting just one man guarding the line and he curled the ball pastMac an tSaoir.

West Kerry were doing everything to give a spirited comeback in this game as Seán Micheál Ó Conchúir managed two quick fire points but it only looked like a consolation effort on the scoreboard.

Dr Crokes had Fionn Fitzgerald and Michael Moloney both Black Carded as the half progressed but it had very little effect to the game as the Killarney side managed a 3rd goal in the 56th minute when Paul Clarke fisted the ball to the net from a great pass by Tony Brosnan,

West Kerry’s day went from bad to worse late on as Jordan Kiely managed two late goals to kill the game off and Crokes now advance to the final against South Kerry on October 22nd.

All Ireland Champions show their mettle

    By John O’Leary PRO

It was always going to be a long shot to have the All Ireland champions dethroned in their own back yard. The difference between a tried and trusted outfit such as Dr Crokes, and a youthful divisional side such as West Kerry was clear to see from a very early stage. Even allowing for the fact that the Chorca Dhuibhne side were backboned by 12 players from the one club, realistically they were never going to be a match for the Killarney side. It must be said that they did struggle on manfully and even when a man down, twenty minutes into the second half the deficit was still seven points, same as it was at the break.

It must have been demoralising for the West Kerry side to be reduced to 14 men on the stroke of half time given that they had performed reasonably well to that point being just a goal adrift at the end of the first quarter. But then Dr Crokes kicked on with five points from play and were well within themselves leading by 1-9 to 0-5 at the break.

The second half started with that audacious goal from Colm Cooper though it was poor defending of the highest order by the West Kerry defence to leave Tomá Mac an tSaoir stranded on his own with a goal poacher such as Cooper around. West Kerry strove manfully with Eanna Ó Conchúir and Sean Mhicil Ó Conchúir outstanding and they outscored the champions by 6 points to 3 during the next 20 minutes. However, the impetus from fresh blood off the bench from Dr Crokes and the defending while a man down combined to see the flood gates open and Dr Crokes finished with a flourish with their subs contributing 3 goals in the final five minutes or so.

They now go on to meet their old rivals South Kerry in the final with their place in the Munster Club Championship already guaranteed regardless of the result on October 22nd.

South Kerry Leave it late to qualify for Co Final

    South Kerry 0-12

    Kerins O’Rahillys 1-08

By Sam Mansfield and Diarmuid Kearney

South Kerry are through to the County Championship Final after a hard fought one point win over Kerins O’Rahillys  played in Fitzgerald’s Stadium this afternoon.

After a very slow start, it took 6 minutes for the first score of the afternoon, Bryan Sheehan fisted over a point after a defensive error from the Rahillys kick out.  Rahillys found it tough early on as just a minute later Barry John Keane missed an easy free just outside the 21 yard line.

With 9 minutes played Rahillys were gifted their chance as they were awarded a penalty by referee Eddie Walsh as Graham O’Sullivan brought Padraig Griffin to the floor and Jack Savage stepped up and calmly dispatched the spot kick past Padraig O’Sullivan.

South Kerry almost had a goal of their own in the 13th minute but a double save from Gary Kissane and Karl Mullins denied Ronan Hussey from raising the green flag.

Midway through the half Rahillys extended their lead by 2 points after John Ferguson and Barry John Keane both pointed before Matthew O’Sullivan pointed in reply.

Bryan Sheehan was influential for South Kerry all afternoon and managed to leave the deficit at one point at half time scoring two great points either side of a Barry John Keane free as Kerins O’Rahillys led at the break 1-03 to 0-05

Rahillys started the ne half on top yet again as Jack Savage pointed a free and Tommy Begley managed to get a point to extend the lead to 3 points.

Bryan Sheehan had a great chance to goal on 45 as he bore down on goal and had his chance blocked on the line by Rahillys captain Danny O’ Sullivan.

Rahillys may rue the kick out strategy following the defeat as a second kick out error cost them dear as Daniel Daly collected the loose ball and managed to point levelling the game.

It was edge of your seat stuff late on as South Kerry went ahead in the 55thh minute through an Ian Galvin free before Jack Savage levelled for Rahillys a minute later.

South Kerry managed to seal the game in the dying embers as Daniel Daly pointed a late free before Mark Griffin capped off proceedings with a long darting run and fisting over to give his side a two point cushion but Barry John Keane pointed a long range free to leave the minimum between them and from the kickout he had a second chance from exactly the same spot from another free but this time his effort fell short and South Kerry it is who go forward to the County Final In Austin Stack Park on October 22nd.

    Scorers:

    South Kerry: B.Sheehan (0-03), D.Daly (0-03), R.Hussey (0-01), P.O’Donoghue (0-01) M.Griffin (0-01), I.Galvin (0-01) N.O’Shea (0-01) M.O’Sullivan (0-01)

Wasteful South Kerry were the better side on the day

    By John O’Leary PRO

In the end, South Kerry very nearly paid for their wastefulness in front of goal. Barry John Keane, who had just reduced the deficit to the minimum with a free from 55 yards in the 61st minute, was presented with a second chance from the same position following the kick-out. Had his shot sailed over for the equaliser  instead of falling short then South Kerry would surely have been kicking themselves facing into a replay after dominating the game for long periods.

Rahillys did not have their first attack of note until the 7th minute yet South Kerry had only a point from Eir Sport Man of the Match Bryan Sheehan to show for their troubles in that time. The goal from the penalty, after quick hands from Tommy Walsh found Padraig Griffin, sustained Rahillys for the remainder of the half and it was only two good points from Sheehan and another from Ronan Hussey late in the half that dragged South Kerry back into the game on the scoreboard by half time.

The District side had kicked seven wides during that opening half, the majority from the usually reliable Sheehan. A 1-3 to 0-5 lead at the break for Rahillys did not reflect the trend of the game despite David Moran doing Trojan work for the Blues around the middle and Cormac Coffey defiant in the half back line.

Rahillys did have a good ten minute spell on the resumption but South Kerry continued to kick wide after wide and Rahillys hung in there for as long as they could. Finally, a point from a “45” by Paul O’Donoghue who had taken over the placed ball duty by now, and another from Daniel Daly levelled the game with 12 minutes to go. The winners still found it hard to edge ahead against a resolute Rahillys defence but those two late points in the 29th minute from Daniel Daly and Mark Griffin finally killed off the Tralee side’s challenge.

South Kerry, without county player Killian Young, will have a lot of improving to do if they are to stand a realistic chance of defeating champions Dr Crokes in the decider, but semi finals are all about winning regardless of what the margin is.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Quarter Finals – Sunday

Holders, and All Ireland Club champions, Dr Crokes, are through to the Semi Finals of the Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship  following a five points victory over Kenmare Shamrocks while South Kerry are back in the semi finals following a hard earned victory over Rathmore in the other quarter final played at Fitzgerald Stadium this afternoon.

    South Kerry 0-15

    Rathmore 0-12

South Kerry are through to the semi finals of the Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football championship following a three points victory over Rathmore in the second game at Fitzgerald Stadium but they were left sweating on the fitness of Bryan Sheehan after the Kerry star limped out of the action five minutes from the break. A scoring burst midway through the second half during which they kicked four unanswered points turned out to be the difference between two evenly matched sides and Rathmore were left to bemoan the early loss of talisman John Moynihan with a leg injury.

South Kerry were quickly into their stride with four points from play inside the opening 7 minutes with Shane Ryan, who was a handful for Mark Griffin throughout, pointing two frees in reply. George O’Keeffe, Donal O’Sullivan and Ryan with another free gave Rathmore the lead for the first time by the 20th minute but Ronan Hussey levelled just before Sheehan departed the scene in the 23rd minute. The Ryan brothers, Shane and Mark gave Rathmore a two point lead but the impressive Robert Wharton and a fine effort from Daniel Daly, who finished with four points from play, saw the sides retire on level terms at the break on 7 points apiece.

The sides exchanged points twice on the resumption before that purple spell by the Divisional side that saw Daniel Daly (0-2) Matthew O’Sullivan, who worked tirelessly in the second half, and Niall O’She give South Kerry a 13 points to 9 lead by the 20th minute of the half.

Padraig O’Sullivan saved a close range effort by Rathmore with Shane Ryan pointing the resultant free but Brendan O’Sullivan replied with a fine point for the southerners before Paul Murphy, operating in the half forward line, gave Rathmore hope with two quick points to half the deficit with four minutes of normal time remaining. However a fine pointed free from Paul O’Donoghue was the insurance score for the winners who finished the game with 14 men after Paul O’Sullivan received a second yellow card.

    Scorers:

South Kerry: Daniel Daly 0-4, Matthew O’Sullivan 0-3, Brendan O’Sullivan and Ronan Hussey (0-1 free) 0-2 each, Robert Wharton, Paul O’Donoghue (free), Graham O’Sullivan  and Niall O’Shea 0-1 each.

Rathmore: Shane Ryan 0-5, frees), George O’Keeffe and Paul Murphy 0-2 each, Mark Ryan, Donal O’Sullivan, Cathal Murphy 0-1 each.

    Dr Crokes 0-17

    Kenmare 0-12

Holders and All Ireland Champions Dr Crokes are through to the semi finals of this year’s championship following a deserved five points victory over Kenmare Shamrocks in the opening game in Fitzgerald Stadium this afternoon.

A wasteful Dr Crokes side were just a point to the good at the break after a closely fought first half but once they surged three clear at the three quarter stage they always looked like winners despite one or two nervous moments.

As in the Club Final meeting between the sides two weeks ago, Kenmare’s  kick-out strategy caused them all sorts of problems with Dr Crokes pushing up on them and the Killarney side winning anything sent to the centre of the field. This game was not as freeflowing as the Club Final and there were plenty yellow cards dished out by Referee Padraig O’Sullivan.

Dr Crokes had the better of the opening exchanges and led by 4 points to 2 after 13 minutes with four different scorers for the champions and Sean O’Shea getting a peach of a point on the run for Kenmare. Both Daithí Casy and Kieran O’Leary, who retired with a leg injury shortly after, had goal chances in that opening quarter . Kenmare showed a gradual improvement with points from Mark Crowley, Paul O’Connor and Stephen O’Brien during their best period of the game and led by a point by the 23rd minute. Indeed Shane O’Sullivan also rattled the cross bar in that period of dominance but Gavin O’Shea sent a screamer just over the bar in the 25th minute to tie the scores. Sean O’Shea restored Kenmare’s lead from a free but then Micheal Burns with his second from play and a Daithí Casy free saw Crokes lead by 7 points to 6 at the break the Killarney side having kicked 8 wides in that half.

Sean O’Shea and Colm Cooper exchanged pointed frees on the resumption but then Crokes hit four points on the trot before Sean O’Leary pointe for Kenmare and at the three quarter stage Crokes were in the driving seat 11 to 8 to th e good. Sub Ambrose O’Donovan restored the four point lead soon after his introduction but then Kenmare’s Brian O’Sullivan had a great chance of a goal but his shot went over the bar. Sean O’Shea from a free did reduce the margin to two points soon after but Dr Crokes were able to strike back with scores anytime their lead was threatened.  Three points still separated the sides when Kenmare were almost in for a goal in the 26th minute but the shot was smothered in the square and Dr Crokes closed out the game with late points from Daithí Casey and Tony Brosnan.

    Scorers:

Dr Crokes: Micheál Burns 0-4, Colm Cooper 0-3 (2 frees), Tony Brosnan and Daithí Casey (0-1 free) 0-2 each, Shane Murphy (45), Johnny Buckley, Gavin O’Shea, Kieran O’Leary Ambrose O’Donovan and Paul Clarke 0-1 each.

    Kenmare: Sean O’Shea 0-6 (0-5 frees), Sean O’Leary, Mark Crowley, Kevin O’Sullivan, Paul O’Connor, Stephen O’Brien and Brian O’Sullivan 0-1 each.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Quarter Finals

There was mixed luck for both Divisional and Tralee sides in the first of the Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Quarter final double bills at Austin Stack Park as Kerins O’Rahillys easily accounted for a disappointing East Kerry side and West Kerry put an end to any aspirations Austin Satcks had of winning the title.

    West Kerry 1-17

    Austin Stacks 0-14

A six point victory was probably a fair reflection of the play as West Kerry put Austin Stacks to the sword in the second game at Austin Stack Park.

West Kerry got off to a flying start and thereafter Stacks were always playing catchup. The Tralee side could never get a foothold in midfield despite the occasional presence of Kieran Donoghy in that area as Alan Fitzgerald, Rob Ó Sé and Jason Hickson dominated play in that around the middle. Up front, the outstanding Eánna Ó Conchúir, Tomás  Sé and Dara Ó Sé were always asking questions of the Stacks defence while at the back, Cathal Ó Lúing and Padraig Ó Sé anchored the centre of defence very well.

West Kerry were three points to the good within six minutes and then Sean Michéal Ó Conchúir found Eanna Ó Conchúir with a cross from the left and the Gaeltacht man finished to the net for the only goal of the game in the 11th minute. Dara Ó Sé pointed the winners further in front but then Stacks had a good spell outscoring their opponents by 5 points to 2 between the 14th and 21st minute with Darragh O’Brien  getting three of those scores (1 from a free).Eanna Ó Conchúir hit the post in the 22nd  minute when he should have goaled but the winners then scored 4 good points to 1 in reply to lead by 1-10 to 0-7 by the 28th minute. Late points from Darragh O’Brien and David Mannix (free) for the Rockies left four points between them at the break, 1-10 to 0-9.

A David Mannix free and a fine score from out the field by Kieran Donaghy to one in reply by Brian Ó Beaglaoich had only reduced the deficit by the minimum by the 40th minute but then in the space of two minutes West Kerry put light between themselves and Stacks with a point from Dara Ó Sé and two from Sean Mhichíl Ó Conchúir (one play) to surge 1-14 to 0-11 clear by the three quarter stage. Kieran Donaghy was trying his best for Stacks but was very often crowded out by a quick tackling West Kerry defence and thereafter the winners never let the margin below the four points mark responding to any scores from the Tralee side as the game became untidy with a number of Black and Yellow cards.

Scorers: West Kerry: Dara Ó Sé 0-6 (4 frees), Eánna Ó Conchúir 1-1, Sean Micheál Ó Conchúir 0-3 (1 free), Brian Ó Beaglaoich 0-2, Alan Fitzgerald, PJ Mac Láimh, Jason Hickson, Tomás Ó Sé, Declan Ó Suilleabháin 0-1 each.

Austin Stacks: David Mannix 0-8 (0-7 frees), Darragh O’Brien 0-3, Greg Horan, Kieran Donaghy and Wayne Guthrie 0-1 each.

    Kerins O’Rahillys 3-12

    East Kerry 1-6

Kerins O’Rahillys made light of the East Kerry challenge in the opening game of the senior football championship double bill at a wet and blustery Austin Stack Park this afternoon. The blues were always in control of this game with the likes of David Moran, Tommy Walsh, and Barry John Keane in superb form throughout and even the inclusion of minor sensation David Clifford could do anything to turn the tide if favour of the men from the East

With Moran dominating the middle, Rahillys got the perfect start and were 4 points to 1 ahead inside the opening 8 minutes with Barry John Keane pointing two frees and Tommy Walsh also very involved.

The winners could afford the luxury of a missed penalty in the 10th minute  – David Moran drove to the right and wide – and the East Kerry goal had another let-off soon after when John Ferguson drove wide after good work by Cormac Coffey and Tommy Walsh. Dara Roche pulled a point back for East Kerry from a free but then Rahillys did what they had been threatening to do – score a goal. It came in the 19th minute when Jack Savage, Tommy Walsh and David Moran combined and the latter it was who sent a fine shot to the East Kerry net.

Paudie Clifford pointed for East Kerry and then Jack Sherwood scored a fine goal out of the blue  after good work by Dara Roche to leave the score 1-4 to 1-3 in favour of Rahillys. At the other end, Ferguson should have done better after being fed by Tommy Walsh and five minutes later Barry John Keane shot straight at Colin Myers when he looked like goaling. Gavin O’Brien and Keane did point late on and at the break it was 1-7 to 1-4 for the winners.

Barry John and David Clifford exchanged pointed frees on the restart but then Rahillys struck for their second goal when Tommy Walsh controlled a high ball and pulled on it first time to the net. John Ferguson passed up another goal chance for Rahillys and at the other end two East Kerry players missed a chance of finishing the ball to the net in the 39th minute. A minute later the outstanding Tommy Walsh set up Gary O’Brien for Rahily’s third goal and leading by 3-9 to 0-5 there was no way back for East Kerry.  There were just four scores in the remaining time with David Moran, Jack Savage and Barry John Keane pointing for Rahillys and Jeff O’Donoghue getting a consolation point for East Kerry.

    Scorers:

Kerins O’Rahillys: Barry John Keane 0-6 (4 frees), Tommy Walsh, David Moran and Gavin O’Brien 1-1 each, Jack Savage 0-2, John Ferguson 0-1.

East Kerry: Jack Sherwood 1-0, Dara Roche 0-2 (0-1 free), Jeff O’Donoghue, Paudie Clifford, Ronan Buckley and Davis Clifford (Free) 0-1 each.

    South Kerry 1-13 Dingle 0-10

South Kerry pulled away in the third quarter of this lacklustre Garveys Superval Senior Football  Championship Round 3 game at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park this afternoon to claim a deserved place in the quarter finals against a Dingle side who were disappointing on the day .

The winners opened the scoring in the first attack through Breándán Kelliher but they were not to score for another twenty minutes . Bryan Sheehan equalised with a great long distance point in the 4th minute but that was his final act in the game as he limped off injured straight away. Still South Kerry made light of his absence hitting another five points without replywith Paul O’Donoghue and Ronan Hussey particularly effective up front. Barry O’Sullivan saw a great shot go just wide of the post for Dingle and Padraig O’Sullivan saved well from Paul Geaney but at the other end Ronan Hussey was on a 3 to 1 inside the Dingle defence but shot tamely wide when an offload would surely have brought a goal. In the last ten minutes of the half Paul Geaney tapped over three close in frees and the scoreboard looked healthier for Dingle at the break with South Kerry leading by just two points 6 to 4.

Paul Geaney and Dara O’Sullivan soon had the sides on level terms but with Killian Young, Brendan O’Sullivan and Ronan Hussey to the fore, South Kerry began to take a grip on the game and led by two at the three quarter stage 10 to 8. Graham O’Sullivan, just after he had pointed following a great pass from Killian Young, had his goal bound shot save at the expense of a 45 which Paul O’Donoghue converted and after Dara O’Sullivan replied, Ronan Hussey and Killian Young pointed to leave four points between the sides. Two minutes from time Paul O’Donoghue was hauled down in the square and Ronan Hussey gave Gavin Curran no chance from the penalty to copperfasten victory for the southern standard bearers.

Scorers: South Kerry: Ronan Hussey 1-5 (1-4 frees), Paul O’Donoghue 0-3 (2 frees), Ian Galvin 0-2, Graham O’Sullivan, Killian Young and Bryan Sheehan 0-1 each. Dingle: Paul Geaney 0-5 (4 frees), Dara O’Sullivan 0-2, Cathal Bambury, Breandán Kelliher, Mikey Geaney (free) and Cathal Bambury 0-1 each.

West Kerry 1-18 Killarney Legion 0-18

West Kerry came good in extra time to claim a Quarter final place and dismiss a Legion side who were shaping like winners for a lot of the game.

With Conor Keane outstanding, Legion got the better start and had three points on the board in the first four minutes with Keane supplying two of those. West Kerry settled and had four points on the trot with Dara Ó Sé getting a brace but the sides were on level terms on 5 points apiece at the end of the first quarter with Conor Keane doubling his tally of points. Tomás and Ogie Ó Sé added points for the West but Jamie O’Sullivan and James O’Donoghue with an effort that should have been a goal responded as the game opened up. Further points from play and a free by Conor Keane saw Legion retire at the break a point to the good, 9 points to 8 and West Kerry bemoaning the fact that they hit nine wides during the half.

Colm Ó Muirceartaigh and Tomás Ó Séput West Kerry in front on the restart but Keane equalised in the 40th minute at which stage the sides were level, 10 points apiece. The twin threat of Keane and O’Donoghue put Legion two clear but the game was turned on its head in the 51st minute when Eanna Ó Conchúir, Declan O’Sullivan combined to put Dara Ó Sé through for a goal the ball being well saved initially by Brian Kelly. Legion, with Jamie O’Sullivan kicking two good scores from long range fought back well to level the game and in the 30th minute O’Sullivan put Legion ahead only for Sean Micheál Ó Conchúir to equalise from a pressure free in the 64th minute to force extra time and  leave the score reading 1-13 for West Kerry to 0-16 for Legion.

The sides swapped two points apiece in the first period of extra time but West Kerry had by far the better of the final period with Dara Ó Sé (2) and James Crean pointing and Legion had one last chance when Denis Sheahan shot low and hard but just wide for a fruitless “45”.

Scorers: West Kerry: Dara Ó Sé 1-5 (0-1 free), Eánna Ó Conchúir, Sean Micheál Ó Conchúir (0-1 free), Tomás Ó Sé, Padraig Óg Ó Sé, James Crean (0-1 free) 0-2 each, Colm Ó Muirceartaigh, Declan O’Sullivan, PJ Mac Láimh 0-1 each. Killarney Legion: Conor Keane 0-8 (0-2 frees), James O’Donoghue  (0-3 frees) and Jamie O’Sullivan 0-4 each, Shaun Keane, Conor Culloty, 0-1 each.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Round 3

East Kerry edge a thriller in Round 3 of the Garvey's SFC

East Kerry 3-24  St Brendans 4-17

This thriller in Austin Stack Park was a throw back to an era not so long passed with neither a blanket defence nor a sweeper on view as two sides slogged it out on the scoreboard with East Kerry coming from 10 points down in the first half to rescue the game with a stunning goal in the 63rd minute to force extra time and then Minor starlet David Clifford made a cameo appearance in the second period of extra time to bag a goal from his one touch of the ball and effectively clinch victory for his side.

It was a victory that did not look possible for the Eastern side at periods during the first half dominated by St Brendans who were a goal up inside 30 seconds when Shane O’Connor netted. It should have been two a few moments later but Michael Griffin was just wide of the post. With Shane O'Connor, the Barrys Jack and Andrew and David O’Callaghan to the fore, St Brendans went on to lead by 1-4 to 0-5 by the 12th minute before O’Connor had his second major after a great passing move. Dara Roche had a shot taken off the line at the other end and Colin Myers saved brilliantly twice, first to deprive Shane O’Connor a hattrick and then Kevin Shanahan’s follow up. The goal St Brendans were threatening did come however when Ivan Parker cut in from the right in the 28th minute and two minutes later David O’Callaghan had the ball in the net for a fourth goal to leave 10 points between the sides. Jack Sherwood, who was to play a leading role in events as the game progressed,  added what seemed at the time to be two token points for East Kerry before the break to leave the interval score 4-6 to 0-10 in favour of St Brendans. The likes of Jeff O’Donoghue and Dara Roche had kept the scorebaoard ticking over for East Kerry in that half.

With Jack Sherwood and Dara Roche in fine form, East Kerry got down to business straight on the resumption and outscored their rivals by 6 points to 2 in the first 7 minutes of the half to reduce the deficit to 4 points but then St Brendans replied with 4 points on the trot, including 2 from Ivan Parker,  to double their lead by the three quarter stage; 4-12 to 0-16.

Roche and Kevin Shanahan swapped points before Jack Sherwood goaled in the 52nd minute to leave 5 between the sides 4-13 to 1-17.Brian O’Donoghue and Kieran Murphy narrowed the deficit to a goal with time running out and three minutes into injury time, a bout of patient passing by East Kerry that seemed to be going nowhere ended with a tremendous shot to the far corner from Fintan Coffey to tie the scores and send the game to extra time; 4-13 to 2-19.

The sides swapped points during the first period of extra time with St Brendans emerging a point to the good 4-16 to 2-21 and still looking the most likely to succeed.

The sides had swapped points once again as we headed into the final period and then Kerry Minor, David Clifford who had just been introduced goaled with his first touch to put East Kerry ahead for the first time and when Dara Roche and Anthony Kennedy followed with points the game had finally been decided.

Scorers: East Kerry: Jack Sherwood 1-5, Dara Roche 0-6 (0-3 frees), Jeff O’Donoghue 0-5 (0-1 45), Ronan Buckley 0-3, David Clifford and Fintan Coffey 1-0 each, Evan Cronin 0-2, Anthony Kennedy, Brian O’Donoghue, Kieran Murphy, 0-1 each. St Brendans: Shane O’Connor 2-3, Ivan Parker (0-1 free) and David O’Callaghan (0-1 free) 1-4 each, Kevin Shanahan 0-2, David Griffin, Michael Griffin, Brendan Poff, George Bastable, 0-1 each.

When Referee Michael Hennessy blew the full time whistle in Gallarus the scoreboard read, West Kerry 0-14 to 0-13 St. Kieran’s.

Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship Round 2A

Austin Stacks 4-13; Killarney Legion 3-6.

For the seventh time in eight seasons the Rock have qualified for the quarter final stage of the Co. Championship after a ten points victory played in an overcast but dry (despite the adverse weather forecast) Connolly Park on this Friday evening (26th May).

The home side got off to a terrific start, going 1-1 up inside the first minute. Kieran Donaghy won the throw-in, found Shane O’Callaghan who passed to Michael O’Donnell and he raced through and found the net after 22 seconds. Star then won the kick-out, found Shane Carroll, who put David Mannix through for a point. Legion then got to grips with the game and James O’Donoghue had  reduced that lead with two quick points. However Legion didn’t score again until James was on target from a free on the stroke of half time.

In between Stacks were totally dominant with a host of players performing individually and collectively. In that period they scored 1-6 without reply to leave them ten points ahead at the break (2-7 to 0-3). Points from five different players – David Mannix (2 – one from a free), Jack O’Shea, Michael O’Donnell (free), Wayne Guthrie and Shane O’Callaghan  and a super goal from Jack Morgan after a brilliant individual run in the 27th minute, left them in that position.

For the first eight minutes of the second half some superstitious people at the game felt they were in a time warp and had moved forward 24  hours to Wembley Stadium for the FA Cup Final. In that eight minutes four goals were scored and nothing else – two for each side. The Rock scored the first two (Greg Horan and Wayne Guthrie). This left them an astonishing 16 points clear at that stage. But Legion will always fight to the last and in the next four minutes got through themselves for two goals (Jamie O’Sullivan and Thomas Moriarty).

The rest of the game was also evenly contested with Stacks putting over six points and Legion adding 1-3, their third goal coming from a 51st minute penalty by James O’Donoghue.

Team: David Hennessy, Barry Walsh, Fearghal MacNamara, Ronan Shanahan, Pa McCarthy, Jack O’Shea (0-1), Jack Morgan (1-0), Shane Carroll, Wayne Guthrie (1-1), Denis McElligott(0-1), Greg Horan (1-1), Michael O’Donnell (1-1 – one free), David Mannix (0-7 – two frees), Kieran Donaghy, Shane O’Callaghan (Capt) (0-1).

Subs used: Fiachna Mangan for O’Donnell (525m), Seán Ryan for Guthrie (58m), Denis Costello for Mangan (62m).

Killarney Legion: Brian Kelly, Cathal Sheahan, Danny Sheahan, Chris Davies, Cian Gammell, Denis Sheahan, Jonathan Lyne, Shaun Keane, Billy McGuire, Rob Leen, Jamie O’Sullivan (1-0), Jack O’Neill, James O’Donoghue (1-5 – penalty goal; one free), Finbarr Murphy, Conor Culloty.

Subs used: Conor Keane (0-1) for Culloty (ht), Thomas Moriarty (1-0) for Murphy (ht), Seán McCarthy for Denis Sheahan (45m).

The win puts Stacks straight in to the quarter finals along with Dr. Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys and Rathmore who have already qualified. The other four quarter final teams will emerge from the winners of the four round 3 games which are due to be played the week after the Munster SF Final.

Legion will be in that round 3, together with St. Brendans, Feale Rangers and Dingle and all four will be drawn against either South Kerry, East Kerry, Kenmare Shamrock or West Kerry.

    Round 2A

    East Kerry 4-15

    Mid Kerry 1-11

They say goals win games and that was certainly the case  when East Kerry had a convincing win against Mid Kerry in Round 2B of the County Senior Championship on Sunday in Lewis road. Their goals came at opportune times in the game for East Kerry, who led 2-4 to 0-2 on 16th minute. Great vision of Paudie Clifford in passing the ball to his brother David who had positioned himself well to rattle the net for East Kerrys third goal on the stroke of half time. Mid Kerry had to line out without 2 of their Intercounty players (Darren O’ Sullivan and Peter Crowley) and had a number of wides, not helped by the strong and gusty wind.

Mid Kerry played a 2 man full forward line and didnt move the ball quickly enough to the forwards when playing with the wind, in the first half. East Kerry had dominance around the middle for much of the first half  with Jack Sherwood and Fintan Coffey playing very well. Mid Kerry put lots of players behind the ball in an attempt to stifle the very strong trheat from the East Kerry forwards.

Mid Kerry were first on the scoreboard with a point in the second minute by Gavan O Grady, provided with a great ball in by Pa Kilkenny. A brace of points for East Kerry (Jack Sherwood and Paudie Clifford) and a lovely Cathal Moriarty point for Mid Kerry, after a fast move upfield had the sides level on the tenth minute. However, an East Kerry purple patch in the next 6 minutes saw Jeff O’Donoghue rattle the net for the first of the East Kerry goals, on the 12th minute, in a move by involvng David Clifford and Shane Cronin. East Kerry continued to do well on the breaking ball and points from Stephen Foley and Dara Roche (from a great pass by Daniel O’Brien) extended the lead. Paudie Clifford picked out Dara Roche who gave the keeper no chance, and netted the ball for East Kerrys second goal  -2-04 to 0-02 sixteen minutes into the game. Mid Kerry were slowing down the ball and it was tit for tat. A Mike Breen point from play and Gavan O’Grady from placed ball was responded to by Jeff O’Donoghue with a lovely point from play. Pa Kilkenny won the ball in defence and cleared to Donnchadh Walsh who picked off a great point.

Mid Kerry were pressing forward and were denied scores by the woodwork and by a great save from East Kerry keeper Colin Myers.  As the half time break approached, Liam Carey pointed a free to see East Kerry lead 2-5 to 0-6. In the last move of the half, Paudie Clifford showed great vision to pick out David who  was well positioned on the edge of the square. In a piece of genius, David slotted the ball to the net for a great goal leaving the half time score East Kerry 3-5 Mid Kerry 0-6.

Mid Kerry needed to get off to a strong start in the second half and the side came out with renewed energy and drive and picked off 2 points within 4 minutes – both from the boot of Gavan O’Grady, the first a well worked point from play from a nice pass by Liam Carey, the second a converted free – 3-5 to 0-8. However, East Kerry held a six point lead from the third quarter. A Dara Roche point from play got the scoreboard moving again for East Kerry after a good spell by Mid Kerry. Jeff O’Donoghue added a second point immediately.

Mid Kerry continued their pressure,  working the ball upfield, from a short kick out, and after good work by Gavan O’Grady, John Tyther found the net - 3-7 to 1-8 in the 42nd minute, leaving 2 scores between the teams. The sides traded points, (Shane Cronin for East Kerry and Gavan O’Grady, Mid Kerry). Both teams introduced a number of substitutes. Two East Kerry points, Dara Roche free and Ronan Buckley from play increased the lead. The game was put beyond any doubt when David Clifford send a lovely ball to Dara Roche who rattled the net, for East Kerrys fourth goal, with 9 minutes of normal time remaining. East Kerry notched up a further 5 points, including great points from 45m free by Ronan Buckley to 2 for Mid Kerry, including a well taken point by Gary Sayers. Final Score: East Kerry 4-15 Mid Kerry 1-11.

East Kerry team: Colin Myers, Darren Brosnan, Stephen Foley,  DJ Murphy, Shane Cronin(0-1), Dan O’Donoghue, Daniel O’Brien, Fintan Coffey, Jack Sherwood (Capt) (0-1), Paudie Clifford (0-1),  Dara Moynihan, Ronan Buckley (0-4;2f 45m), David Clifford (1-0), Jeff O’ Donoghue (1-03), Dara Roche (2-03) Subs used: Padraig de Brún, Evan Cronin, Con O’Mahony, James Devane, Josh Flynn, Mike Mc Carthy

Mid Kerry team: Mike Moriarty (Capt), Pa Kilkenny, Ger Hartnett, Gavin Evans, David Roche, Mike Breen ((0-1), Jack Brosnan, Colin McGillicuddy, Ronan Murphy, Gary Sayers (0-1), Liam Carey (0-2f), John Tyther (1-0), Gavan O’Grady (0-5;3f), Donnchadh Walsh (0-1), Cathal Moriarty (0-1). Kerins O’Rahillys 2-13

    Dingle 3-9

In sunny but blustery Dingle the visitors Kerins O’Rahilly’s got the better of Dingle in Páirc an Ághasaigh in Round 2A of the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football Championship, Dingle 3-9 to 2-13 Kerins O’Rahilly’s.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s lost Tommy Walsh just a couple of minutes after the start of the game, but this seemed to drive the visitors on. Points from play from Barry John Keane, David Moran and Cian Sayers gave Kerins O’Rahilly’s a three point lead after 5 minutes. At this stage Kerins O’Rahilly’s were strolling through the heart of the Dingle defence and it wasn’t long till John Ferguson scored their first goal. Barry O’Sullivan kicked a point from play for Dingle but soon after Gearoid Savage hit the back of the Dingle net for Kerins O’Rahilly’s second goal. Barry John Keane kicked a point from a free kick for the Tralee side to leave the score after 15 minutes, Dingle 0-1 to 2-4 Kerins O’Rahilly’s.

Barry John Keane added another point from play for Kerins O’Rahilly’s but  Dingle responded with a Mikey Geaney point from a free kick off the ground and Paul Geaney fisted a point for Dingle shortly after. Then Mikey Geaney kicked a long ball into Conor Geaney, who passed to Paul Geaney who punched the ball to the Kerins O’Rahilly’s net for Dingle’s first goal and after Paul Geaney had another point from play and Mikey Geaney a point from a free kick, Dingle had reduced the gap to a goal. Then Conor Geaney received the ball and beat his man and blasted a shot to the Kerins O’Rahilly’s net for Dingle’s second goal. Barry John Keane put Kerins O’Rahilly’s one up with a point from a free kick before Mathew Flaherty levelled the game for Dingle with a point from play. Con Barrett kicked a point from play for Kerins O’Rahilly’s just before the break and when Referee Padraig O’Sullivan blew the halftime whistle the scoreboard read, Dingle 2-6 to Kerins O’Rahilly’s 2-7.

Kerins O’Rahilly’s started the second half like the first with  points from Barry John Keane, one from play and one from a free kick. Jack Savage kicked a point from play for Kerins O’Rahilly’s and Dingle keeper Gavin H Curran had to make a great save to deny them a third goal. The resulting 45 was converted by David Moran for Kerins O’Rahilly’s. Conor Geaney opened the scoring for Dingle with a point from play but Kerins O’Rahilly’s had points from play from Gearoid Savage and David Moran to put them six points clear. Then Dingle’s Mikey Geaney hit a powerful shot that hit the crossbar and a Kerins O’Rahilly’s defender fouled the ball on the rebound, penalty for Dingle. Kerins O’Rahilly’s keeper Gary Kissane saved brilliantly from Paul Geaney’s penalty kick but Geaney made no mistake when he gathered the rebound  and blasted to the Kerins O’Rahilly’s net for Dingle’s third goal. With 15 minutes gone in the second half the scoreboard read, Dingle 3-7 to 2-13 Kerins O’Rahilly’s.

Dingle went in search of much needed scores but some poor kicking and decision making meant they squandered a lot of opportunities. A Conor Geaney pointed free  left them two behind and shortly after Mathew Flaherty with a point from play left the minimum between the sides. Unfortunately for Dingle time ran out and when Referee Padraig O’Sullivan blew the fulltime whistle the scoreboard read, Dingle 3-9 to Kerins O’Rahilly’s 2-13.

So Kerins O’Rahilly’s progress to the Quarterfinals of the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football Championship and Dingle will now play in Round 3 of the Championship.

Credit to the home side they responded again and with eleven minutes left they led 1-13 to 2-09. Garvey's SuperValu Senior Football Championship - Round 2B

    South Kerry        2-17       Kilcummin 1-5

South Kerry had little difficulty in disposing of the Kilcumin challenge in this Senior Football Championship Round 2 game in Lewis Rd this afternoon. The winners led by six points having played against the wind in the first half, and in the second period, the Divisional side tacked on the scores at will.

South Kerry went on the attack from the throw in and had 1-3 on the board within the first nine minutes with Paul O’Donoghue setting up Niall O’Shea for the goal in the 9th minute. Philip Casey opened the scoring for Kilcummin but points from a beautifully judged “45” from Bryan Sheehan and another from Paul O’Donoghue were followed by a Kilcummin goal from Paul O’Riordan in the 21st minute after a good passing move and the club side could have had another shortly afterwards when the same player had his shot smothered by Padraig O’Sullivan. It was a costly miss as the ball made its way down field and Paul O’Donoghue set up Bryan Sheehan for South Kerry’s second goal.

Philip Casey and Kevin McCarthy pointed frees for Kilcummin either side of a Bryan Sheehan free for South Kerry and at the break the score was 2-6 to 1-3 for the winners.

Noel Duggan opened the scoring for Kilcummin on the restart but South Kerry reeled off five points in as many minutes in reply before Shane McSweeney had Kilcummin’s fifth – and as it transpired, last point – in the 10th minute of the half. The losers did have plenty of possession but could not transfer that possession into scores despite a number of chances, and South Kerry added on six further points with Kerry custodian also bringing off a fine save from Paul O’Donoghue to deny the St Marys man a goal in the 47th minute.

So South Kerry advance to Round 3 where they will come up against a Round 2A losing team while Kilcummin make their exit from the competition after successive defeats to St Brendans and South Kerry.

Scorers: South Kerry: 1-4 (4 frees), Niall O’Shea 1-3 ,Barry O’Dwyer, Paul O’Donoghue  and Daniel Daly 0-3 each, Dilan O’Donoghue 0-1. Kilcummin: Paul O’Riordan 1-0, Philip Casey 0-2 (1fr), Kevin McCarthy, Noel Duggan and Shane McSweeney 0-1 each.

West Kerry 0-12 to 1-13 Feale Rangers

Played in sunny but windy Gallarus on Sunday afternoon it was the visitors who went home happy after an opening win in the Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry Senior Football Championship on a score of West Kerry 0-12 to 1-13 Feale Rangers.

Feale Rangers were first to score after Anthony Maher made a run through the heart of the West Kerry defence and when he offloaded the ball to Padraig Quille, Quille fired to the West Kerry net giving keeper Tomás Mac an tSaoir no chance. West Kerry were rattled and considering that they were playing with the aid of the gale it was not the start that they envisaged.

West Kerry responded with points from play for Donnacha Higgins and Jason Hickson but Anthony Maher kicked a point from play for Feale Rangers shortly after. Points from Declan O’Sullivan, Dara Ó Sé, Seán Micheál Ó Conchuir and Dara Ó Sé again gave West Kerry a two point lead but Feale Rangers responded with points from Padraig Quille and a Conor Cox free to level the game. Two more points from Jason Hickson and Dara Ó Sé put West Kerry two up again but a Conor Cox pointed free for Feale Rangers just before the break left them only one behind. When Referee Seán Joy blew the half time whistle the scoreboard read, West Kerry 0-8 to Feale Rangers 1-4

Conor Cox opened the scoring for Feale Rangers with a point from play to level the game but Cian Ó Murchú scored a point from play for West Kerry to restore their lead. Bryan Sweeney levelled the game for Feale Rangers with a point from play and David Foran put them one ahead with another  point from play. Seán Micheál Ó Conchuir levelled the game for West Kerry with a point from a free kick but a Conor Cox pointed free and a Padraig Quille point from play restored Feale Rangers lead with about 15 minutes left to play.

Conor Cox kicked two points from play to extend Feale Rangers lead to four points and a  Dara Ó Sé point from play for West Kerry was quickly cancelled out with another Conor Cox point from a free kick for Feale Rangers and with 5 minutes left to play Feale Rangers were a goal and a point to the good. Seán Micheál Ó Conchuir kicked a point from a free kick for West Kerry to leave them a goal behind. West Kerry went in search of that vital goal but the Feale Rangers defence stood firm and when the ball broke down field it was Conor Cox with a point from play that sealed victory for Feale Rangers.

When Referee Seán Joy blew the full time whistle the scoreboard read, West Kerry 0-12 to Feale Rangers 1-13.

Rathmore edged out East Kerry in a fast moving, exciting game in Round 1 of the Garveys SuperValu County Senior Football Championship, played in Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday evening. East Kerry started the stronger and had 0-3 on the board within 4 minutes. Dara Roche pointed in the opening minute and followed with a second point from play in the second minute. Mark Reen opened Rathmore’s account with a pointed free on the the 6th minute. East Kerry replied with 2 points from placed balls, Dara Roche and Paudie Clifford on target to leave them 0-5 to 0-1 ahead with 15 minutes played.

A Rathmore goal levelled the game on the 28th minute. A short kick out by East Kerry and a mix-up in their defence was capitalised on by  George O’Keeffe who snuck in for a well taken goal 0-8 to 1-5. On the restart, the game continued at pace. The sides traded points, Rathmores Shane Ryan pointed  a free and Padraig de Brún a point from play. East Kerry pressed forward only to be denied scores by a strong Rathmore defence.  Two substitutions for East Kerry, Dara Moynihan and Jeff O’Donoghue, brought fresh impetus to the attack and East Kerry continued to press forward. The divisional side were in poor luck when a rasper of a shot came off the cross bar. With Jack Sherwood and Liam Kearney doing well at mid field East Kerry’s Jeff O’Donoghue and Dara Moynihan set up an attack and  Dara Roche  rattled the Rathmore net with a shot, low to the corner on the 42nd minute, despite the attentions of 3 Rathmore defenders. Jeff O’Donoghue extended the East Kerry lead with a point from play – 1-10 to 1-07 going into the last quarter.

Rathmore introduced Aidan O’Mahony, who steadied the ship and shortly after Rathmore capitalised on a turn over ball with a Shane Ryan point from play.  Despite a number of attacks, with both defences strong, neither side scored in the next 5 minutes. Both sides made a number of substitutions as Rathmore brough on Conor Jenkins while East Kerry brought on Fintan Coffey and David Clifford. The game turned in Rathmores favour for the next 8 minutes. Paul Murphy made a surging run forward and won a free, which Shane Ryan put over the bar, reducing the gap to the minimum. George  O’Keeffe levelled the game, 1-10 a piece, with a great point from distance with eight minutes of normal time remaining, setting up a exciting finale to the game.

Rathmore now dominated matters. Brian Friel came on for Rathmore and Shane Ryan put the Rathbeg side ahead with a point from play. After a penetrating run forward, Mike Joe Kelliher fisted the ball over the bar to extend the Rathmore lead. With the clock ticking down, East Kerry brought on Michael O’Donoghue and Con O’Mahony. With a minute remaining, East Kerry sent the ball into the edge of the square, and a last minute reprieve looked on the cards. David Clifford rose high and, despite being surrounded by a number of defenders, sent a fisted the ball goalwards, only to be denied by the upright. The experienceof the Rathmore side showed as they played down the clock, to progress to the round 2A on a final scoreline of Rathmore 1-12 East Kerry 1-10.

Killarney Legion 0-15 Kenmare Shamrocks 1-12

Both sets of supporters of these two sides certainly got their nerves well and truly tested in this tense and absorbing 1st.rd.game played in Derreen on Sunday afternoon. The football may not have been of the highest standard at times but the closeness of the encounter and the seesaw nature of the scoring made it compulsive viewing. If the Legion were to overturn their club championship defeat to the same opposition then they would have to limit Stephen O’Brien and Sean O’Shea's influence and this they did with Chris Davies doing a fine man marking job on O’Brien and Darragh Doherty holding up his end. One problem though was the concession of frees which led to O’Shea notching 6 from dead ball chances. Legion captain Danny Sheahan had a tremendous game on Paul O’Connor and overall the Legion backs did well. The Kenmare defence also stood out  in which Dara Crowley and Sean O Sullivan were no less effective and this was the springboard for much of their attacks.

The first half was especially tense as reflected by the halftime score which saw the Legion go in ahead by 4pts.to 3. What could have been a critical moment for the Legion was the awarding of a penalty just on the stroke of halftime as Jamie O’Sullivan smartly turned Dara O’Shea and was hauled down just as he was about to shoot. Up stepped James O’Donoghue but his low shot was turned away one handed by Kieran Fitzgibbon in the Kenmare goal. Crucially the same player brought off another timely stop midway through the second half when Tom Moriarty bore down on goal but again was denied by the keeper.

The second period was far more fluid as both sides went for it and the scoring rate increased as a consequence. While O’Shea was Kenmare's scorer in chief Jamie O’Sullivan was his equal as he hit 4 minors and became more and more of a problem for the Shamrocks. James O’Donoghue also made a telling contribution as he bagged 5 pts.for his side. As the clocked ticked into Injury time it looked like the Legion had nicked it as Finbar Murphy cooly slooted over after good work by O’Donoghue but in a last gasp sally O’Shea levelled from 40m. to send the game to extra time.

Kenmare sprung from the traps at the very start of extra time as sub Kevin Price struck for a goal after 40 seconds and it could have been a fatal blow for the home side but keeping their cool they gradually chipped away at the deficit and points from Cian Gammell, Jonathan Lyne and Conor Keane levelled matters to live to fight another day.

On the positive side the Legion created goal chances, they had a sound defence, and in adversity kept cool and were rewarded for that. The replay on Sunday next in Kenmare will  no doubt be another tense and tight affair as these two sides continue their trilogy.

    Dingle 3-16         Kenmare District 2-4

Dingle had little difficulty in defeating Kenmare District – last year’s beaten county finalists but this year playing without the Kenmare club – at Templenoe on Saturday evening. The District side were also missing some key players through injury and exams including county players Tadhg Morley and Adrian Spillane, along with John Mark Foley and Darragh Siochru.

Kenmare District  were first off the mark with a goal from Killian Spillane in the 6th minute soon followed by a point from the same player but after Conor Geaney opened the visitor’s account, Paul Geaney found the net to give Dingle a 1-3 to 1-1 lead by the 20th minute. Michael and Paul Geaney added further points but Pat Spillane struck for the homeside’s second goal in the 25th minute and at the break it was 1-5 to 2-1 for the clubside.

Conor Geaney again opened the scoring for Dingle on the resumption and Matthew Flaherty added another before a goal from Conor Geaney and a Michael Geaney point had the visitors 2-8 to 2-1 ahead at the 38th minute. Killian Spillane pointed in the 41st minute for his side’s first score of the second half but then Paul Geaney struck for his second goal to put Dingle 3-10 to 2-2 ahead at the three quarter stage. With the three Geaneys in superb form Dingle added on the points to eventually win by a fifteen points margin

St Brendans advanced to Round 2 winners group of the Garvey's SFC with a three points victory over Kilcummin at Blennerville on Saturday evening. It was tit for tat in the opening stages before a high delivery by Ivan Parker was punched to the net by Diarmuid Herlighy to put Brendans 1-4 to 0-5 in the lead. Soon after Eoghan O’Brien saved at point blank range to deny Kilcummin’s Donal Maher a goal and at the break it was 1-5 to 0-7 for the home-side who were now turning to play with the wind.

With Kevin McCarthy on target for the visitors the sides were level on three occasions at the early stages of the second half before Ivan Parker got St Brendans second goal to put his side 2-9 to 0-10 ahead. With Ivan Parker, Jack Barry and Brandon Barrett to the fore, St Brendans went on to lead by 8 points with five minutes on the clock before Matt Keane finished to the net to give Kilcummin a lifeline. The visitors did get a dsecond goal but Daniel Moynihan’s effort was a case of too little too late to affect the result.

    St. Kierans 1-13 (aet)

Level at the end of normal time (0-14 to 1-11) both sides could still not be separated at the end of extra time in this first round of the Garveys Supervalu Co. Senior Football Championship played in Connolly Park on this Saturday evening (13th May).

Kierans got off to a blistering start and were 1-3 to no score ahead after 12 minutes. Their first score came after just 25 seconds when centre-back, Eamon Kiely raced up field and put over. Thomas Hickey then added two more (the first of which could have been a goal). But the goal did come in the 8th minute when good work by Daniel Murphy and Thomas again was finished to the net by Vinney Horan.

Vinney’s name-sake, Greg opened the home side’s account in the 12th minute, followed a minute later by a David Mannix free. But Kierans pressed on from there, scoring five more points without reply (two Philip O’Connor frees and one each from play by Thomas Hickey, James Walsh and Daniel Murphy) to leave them nine points ahead after 20 minutes. Two more Stacks’ points followed in the 22nd and 26th minutes, with Michael O’Donnell on target from play and another David Mannix free, before James Walsh got the last score of the half, courtesy of a 28th free, to leave his side ahead at half time by eight points (1-9 to 0-4).

Kieran Donaghy, who didn’t start as a result of a niggling injury picked up in the game against Strand Road two weeks ago, was introduced at the start of the second half and he made a major impact for the rest of the game.  During the first 21 minutes of the second half Stacks had wiped out Kierans 8 points half time lead while holding the opposition scoreless as well during this period – David Mannix (4 pts – two from frees), Jack Morgan, Michael O’Donnell, Greg Horan and Shane O’Callaghan scoring Stacks eight points. Kierans cause was not helped when their influential corner forward, Thomas Hickey had to retire with an injury just four minutes after the resumption. The visitors first score on this half came in the 55th minute from another James Walsh free, to be followed within seconds by one from play by Adam Barry.

But Stacks responded with two late points from David Mannix (one from a free) to send the game to extra time.

Kierans shaded the opening half of extra time, scoring two points from play by substitutes Mike McCarthy and Tom McGoldrick while Stacks only contribution came from another David Mannix free, to leave Kierans ahead by one (1-13 to 0-15) at the extra time interval.

Thirty eight seconds after the resumption David Mannix pointed another free, following a foul on Kieran Donaghy to level the game for the third and, as it turned out, final time. Understandably with both sides tiring, that was the only score of that second half and the sides must meet again, probably next weekend, to decide the outcome.
