Castleisland Mart Junior Premier Football Championship Final
Piarsaigh na Dromoda 0-17
Firies 1-11 (AET)
Drmid Pearses were crowned Castleisland Mart Junior Premier football champions at a well attended JP O’Sullivan Park Killorglin this evening but they needed extra time to get the better of a Firies side who looked like they were going to hold on for victory in normal time. Firies had taken a slender 6 points to 5 lead to the interval but they the resumed a transformed side with Shane O’Donoghue pointing in the 32nd minute and a minute later Padraig de Brúin soloed through a static Dromid defence to fir the ball past Brian O’Leary for the only goal of the match. When Donnchadh O’Sullivan soloed up the wing and lofted over another point a minute later, Firies had built what looked like a winning platform being 1-8 to 0-5 clear. Jack Sherwood was playing out of his skin at their stage for the light blues and he was getting good support from Stephen Foley and Donnchadh O’Sulivan.
However the move of former Kerry Minor Graham O’Sullivan to the centre of the field was to pay rich dividends for the South Kerry side who took a hold on the game but could not turn an abundance of possession into scores. Thomas Curran had a shot from close range smothered by Con O’Mahony and then Billy O’Rourke saved well from Dilan O’Donoghuewith the result that Dromid had not added to their half time tally by the three quarter stage. Then however Aidan “Shine” and Chris Farley had two good points within a minute but when Denis “Shine” and Dilan O’Donoghue set up Graham O’Sullivan in the 52nd minute the latter’s shot crashed off the post with goal written all over it. The impressive O’Donoghue retired injured after that bout of play and it looked as though Dromid’s goose was cooked. However, the South Kerry side owned the ball at this stage and came forward in waves with the result that Firies were forced to foul on occasions and Thomas Curran picked off four pointed frees on the trot to tie the game 1-8 to 0-11 at the end of normal time. While it certainly hard luck on Firies not to hold out, it would have been rough justice on Dromid had they failed to send the game to extra time at least.
The domination by Dromid continued into extra time with Graham O’Sullivan picking off three points from play and Donnchadh O’Sullivan converting a free for Firies from 49 yards to leave Dromid 0-14 to 1-9 ahead at the break.
Graham O’Sullivan again and Eoin O’Leary extended Dromid’s lead on the resumption before Donnchadh O’Sullivan left just a goal between the sides once again however Thomas Curran had the last say with the insurance score from a free to spark wild scenes of excitement at the final whistle.
The opening half was a dour struggle with Dromid wasting a number of good scoring chances in the first quarter. Good points from Dilan O’Donoghue for Dromid and Jack Sherwood for Firies were the standout scores as the sides were locked on 3 points each after 15 minutes and these two players provided the highpoints of the second quarter with excellent scores as Firies showed a gradual improvement as the half progressed and when Sherwood kicked them into the lead just on the half time whistle they were full of confidence going to the dressing room. It was not to be however as Dromid took a stranglehold on the middle third of the field and though it took them a while to find the target there was no stopping them once they discovered their scoring touch.
After the game, county committee chairman Tim Murphy presented the Tom Keane Cup to winning captain Chris Farley and Graham O’Sullivan received the Castleisland Mart Man of the Match trophy from Denis Griffin of Castleisland Mart.
Scorers: Dromid Pearses: Thomas Curran 0-5 frees, Graham O’Sullivan 0-4, Chris Farley 0-3 (1 free), Dilan O’Donoghue 0-2, Aidan “Shine” O’Sullivan, Kevin Sheehan and Eoin O’Leary 0-1 each.
Firies: Donnchadh O’Sullivan 0-5 (4 frees), Padraig de Brúin 1-0, Jack Sherwood and William Courtney 0-2 each. Shane O’Donoghue 0-1.

Castleisland Mart Junior Premier Semi Final
Firies 3-12
Na Gaeil 0-18
This was quite an achievement by Firies who caused a major shock when defeating favourites Na Gaeil and qualifying for their first Junior Premier Championship final at a well attended Castleisland venue this afternoon.
Na Gaeil were fresh from their big victory last weekend when claiming the Senior League Division 3 title while Firies had finished a distant seven points off the promotion places in Division 4.
The winners also suffered a hammer blow when losing former Kerry panellist Jack Sherwood and wing forward Shane O’Donoghue to Black Cards inside the opening five minutes of play. By then however Sherwood had left his mark on the game when he weaved his way through the middle of the Na Gaeil defence to slam the ball past Timmy Culloty in the 2nd minute. Sherwood had no sooner returned to midfield than he got his marching orders to be replaced by Kerry minor Donnchadh O’Sullivan who went on to have a major influence on the game.
O’Donoghue suffered a similar fate three minutes later but 1-2 to 0-1 ahead, these setbacks did not seem to have an effect on the Farranfore side.
Firies were dominating play but were not converting possession into scores until Donnchadh O’Sullivan had a good score in the 19th minute to put his side 1-3 to 0-2 ahead. At the other end, the Firies defence was superb but Na Gaeil did not help their cause by kicking 5 wides. Diarmuid Herlihy replied with a good point for Na Gaeil but Pat Brown and Colm O’Shea had equally good scores for Firies.
Andrew Barry was influential for Na Gaeil at this stage and they finished the half on top with good scores from Jack Barry and Mike Griffin but Donnchadh O’Sullivan replied with a fine score for the winners as play swung from end to end and before the break. Mike Griffin and Kerry minor, Niall Donohue swapped points to leave the half time score 1-7 to 0-6 for Firies after a very enjoyable first half that was littered with good scores.
Na Gaeil came out a far more determined outfit in the second half and had four points kicked within eight minutes with Diarmuid Herlihy getting two of those to level the game as the Tralee side dominated play.
However, just when it looked as if Na Gaeil were going to stamp their authority on the game, Firies struck for two lightening goals within a couple of minutes of each other. First Conal Murphy cut in from the left to shoot past Culloty and then the score of the game as Padraig de Brúin and Donnchadh O’Sullivan somehow worked their way out of a tight situation on the wing, played a one-two and O’Sullivan it was who planted the ball in the net to give Firies a 3-8 to 0-11 lead at the 41st minute.
Na Gaeil tried all they could in the next ten minutes as they went at the Firies defence time and again but while they did have 3 pointed frees from Darragh Carmody and another point from Jack Barry they could not get that elusive goal to ignite their fightback and Donnchadh O’Sullivan had also pointed superbly for Firies in between those scores.
O’Sullivan with a lovely pointed free from the wing had Firies leading by 3-11 to 0-15 with five to go and then the winners had a let off when Eoin O’Neill rattled the Firies cross bar with a tremendous shot and Darragh Carmody followed with two pointed frees in quick succession to reduce the margin to two points. William Courtney had a super breakaway score for Firies and when Donnchadh O’Sullivan repeated his earlier pointed free from the wing there was only going to be one winner.
Scorers:
Firies: Donnchadh O’Sullivan 1-5 (0-2 frees), Conal Murphy and Jack Sherwood 1-0, Colm O’Shea 0-2, Niall Donohue, Pat Browne, Padraig de Brúin 0-1 ech.
Na Gaeil: Darragh Carmody 0-10 frees, Diarmuid Herlighy 0-3, Jack Barry, Micheal Griffin and Eoin O’Neill 0-2 each, Seamie O’Neill 0-1.

Castleisland Mart Junior Premier Championship Semi Final
Dromid: 1-12
Skellig Rangers: 0-6
Dromid Pearses advanced to the Junior Premier Championship final following a nine point victory over Skellig Rangers at Con Keating Park in Cahersiveen on Saturday evening. Wind assisted and with Man of the Match. Graham O'Sullivan to the fore, Dromid were the better side in a very physical opening half after which they led by 6 points to 1 with Niall O’Shea and Grahan O’Sullivan grabbing a brace apiece and Brendan O’Sullivan getting the Portmagee side’s only score of the half.
Dromid continued to dominate on the restart with early points from Gearoid Jackie O’Sullivan and Chris Farley to one in reply from Martin O’Sullivan who had also rattled the crossbar in th e36th minute. Farley added another minor before Thomas Curran struck for a Dromid goal in the 46th minute to leave his side leading by 1-9 to 0-2.
Diarmuid Keating did pull a few points back for Skellig from frees but further points from Graham O’Sullivan and Chris Farley made sure of Dromid Pearses place in the final against Firies or Na Gaeil who play on the 30th September.

Junior Premier - Round 1
Na Gaeil 1-15
Beaufort 1-11
Na Gaeil played Beaufort in the first round of the Premier Junior Championship in Killeen on Bank Holiday Monday in what was a perfect day for football.
It was the visitors who got off to the better start and scored three unanswered points through a pointed free from Niall O’Connor and two from play from midfielders Ronan Murphy and Shane O’Sullivan. Na Gaeil’s Jamie Lowham had their first point on 7 minutes followed by a point from Diarmaid Herlihy. Fergal Hallisey fired over a free for Beaufort followed by another point from Na Gaeil’s Diarmaid Herlihy to leave the score 0-03 to 0-04 in favour of Beaufort after 20 minutes. Shane O’Sullivan and Diarmaid Herlihy swapped points. Then Na Gaeil hit a purple patch and completely took over. Darragh Carmody and Seamie O’Neill scored a point each for Na Gaeil followed by a point from Stefan Okunbor and a pointed free from Darragh Carmody. The defining score came in the 24th minute when Jamie Lowham passed to Seamie O’Neill and he hit a rasper low and hard to the bottom right corner of the net to put Na Gaeil six ahead. The next three scores were for Na Gaeil when Diarmaid Herlihy fired over his 4th point of the afternoon followed by a Darragh Carmody pointed free and an Ian McCarthy point to leave Na Gaeil 9 points ahead at the whistle. Half time score: Na Gaeil 1-11; Beaufort 0-05.
Beaufort came out in the 2nd half with all guns blazing and soon whittled down Na Gaeil’s 9 point lead. Their corner forward Fergal Hallisey scored a point almost from the re-start and three minutes later Liam Carey burst through the Na Gaeil defence to score a great goal. Then Mike Breen and Liam Carey scored two more points for Beaufort to leave just a goal between the sides with 9 minutes gone in the 2nd half. But Na Gaeil steadied the ship and Darragh Carmody put over two pointed frees to stretch their lead to 5. Liam Carey pointed a free Beaufort on 13 minutes and then came the defining moment of the half when Beaufort were awarded a penalty for a foul on one of their forwards in the small square. Liam Carey stepped up and struck it low and hard to the right but it was brilliantly saved by Tadhg O’Neill in the Na Gaeil goal. Scores were hard to come by from there until the finish. Darragh Carmody pointed yet another free for Na Gaeil and Liam Carey and Na Gaeil’s Dan O’Connor exchanged points to leave the full time score; Na Gaeil1-15; Beaufort 1-10.
If Beaufort had scored the penalty things might have different but Na Gaeil held out for a good win.
Tadhg O’Neill had a great game between the posts for Na Gaeil. Eoin Doody and Andrew Barry played well in defence. Jack Barry and Stefan Okunbor held their own at midfield and up front Seamie O’Neill, Darragh Carmody, Jamie Lowham and Diarmaid Herlihy were effective.
For Beaufort Cormac O’Connor and Ger Hartnett were strong in defence. Ronan Murphy played well in midfield and up front Liam Carey and Padraig Doona showed well.

Ballymac 1-09
Fossa 3-12
Ballymac played host to Fossa in the first round of the Junior Premier Championship in what was sure to be an exciting game, and the mass of supporters that attended were not be disappointed.
Fossa’s Paudie Clifford began the scoring with a point resulting from a free given by Referee Paul Hayes , but Ballmacs number 10 Paudi McCarthy returned the score with an excellent point to level the game in the opening minutes. Moments later Ballymacs Aiden Breen delighted the supporters when he landed the ball in the back of the net to widen the score further . There followed by another point from Gene Griffin , but Fossa were quick to react and with the expertise of David Clifford on their side who scored two goals and with 4 more points in the first half Fossa led the way to half time .
Half time score Ballymac 1-06 Fossa 2-08
The second half began with Ballymacs Aiden Breen opening the scoring with a great point and Gene Griffin followed by trying to narrow the score difference but it wasn’t to go his way and the ball landed wide. Fossa’s David Clifford added to their own score with another 2 successive points, but Ballymac fought hard to close the score but a penalty awarded to Fossa in the closing stages of the game resulting in another goal taken by Paudi Clifford ended Ballmac’s dreams of victory. Gene Griffin managed to get the ball past the Fossa defence in the dying seconds to score a point but time was not on Ballmacs side and it wasn’t enough to keep the win at home. While it wasn’t to be Ballmac’s day they gave a great performance it what was bound to be a tough challenge following Ballymacs defeat of Fossa a few weeks ago in the County League.

Junior Premier - Round 1
Dromid Pearses 0-17
Renard 1-11
A large crowd together with good conditions made for an entertaining first round match in the Junior Premier Club Championship last Sunday afternoon in Páirc an Phiarsaigh. It was to be clever distribution of the ball, team-work and the mixture of youth and experience that helped the host side win out against neighbour’s Renard.
While the Pearses had the favourites tag going into this match, Renard demonstrated that they were a determined outfit and that they could deliver strong performances throughout the field led by Mark Sugrue who was to score the only goal of the match in the first half. However, Piarsiagh na Dromoda led from the start with a point from play from Niall Ó Sé within one minute which gave them the lead. Points followed for the Pearses by way of frees and points from play, but Alan and Kevin Curran were marking Dromid’s forwards tightly and Mark Sugrue was doing well at mid-field and converting frees which kept them in the running. An excellent save from Brian Ó Laoire was to ensure that the visitors weren’t going to take the lead but a well taken goal by Sugrue did bring them right back in contention for the second quarter of the first half. However, stalwart Aodháin Ó Conchubhair was regularly on hand to pick up an amount of loose ball and put it to good use including scoring a point towards the end of the first half.
Half time score Dromid 0-10 Renard 1-05.
The surprise starting of Kerry’s Under 21’s captain Brian Sugrue was cause for concern as he made his mark on the game but Padraig J Ó Súiileabháin was the right man to limit the damage he could have done. Equally Graham Ó Súilleabháin marked Rob Wharton well and added two fine scores from play. If Cillian Young was to return, the general consensus was that Piarsiagh na Dromoda would have had to step up a gear but as it was the team did enough to add seven points in the second half to Renard’s six points. The final score was Piarsaigh na Dromoda 0-17 to Renard 1111.
The game was refereed by Peter Lyons.
The Dromid team and supporters can now look forward to Round 2 in this championship when they meet Fossa once again next weekend.

(after extra time)
Championship football returned to Listowel with a bang on Easter Saturday as Emmets and Annascaul provided spectators with a thrilling game of football that needed extra time to separate the sides.
The visitors opened the scoring in the opening minute through a well worked Emmett Kennedy score which was quickly cancelled out by Emmets captain Maurice Whelan. Listowel marksman Conor Cox put the home side in front from a placed ball effort two minutes later before the evergreen Genie Farrell set up Cathal Ferriter to level the game. Emmets were working well now and attacking from the wings with John Heaphy showing well on the left flank and bringing his half forwards into play. The West Kerry men were next to mark the scoreboard however as James Crean fired them into the lead with an excellent solo run on the quarter mark. The hosts responded well and managed to reel off the next three scores courtesy of David Sheehy, Darragh Leahy and full forward Noel Kennelly. Emmets were moving well now and were in total control all over the field as they penetrated the Annascaul defence at will. Shane Foley pointed off his right to keep them in touch before two points from Conor Cox and one each from Cormac Mulvihill and David Sheehy pushed the home side further in front. A late free from wing forward Jason Hickson kept Annascaul in touch as referee Padraig O'Sullivan called for the ball to bring the half to a close.
Halftime score: Emmets 0-09 Annascaul 0-05
Two points from Cox and Noel Kennelly stretched Listowel’s lead to six early in to the second half and it took wing back David Clifford to register the West Kerry men's next score with 22 minutes remaining. Emmets midfield pairing of Bryan Sweeney and Darragh Leahy were motoring well though and were picking out their inside forwards at ease which resulted in Annascaul giving away two scorable frees both of which were converted by Conor Cox. When substitute Sam Tarrant nailed a third consecutive Listowel free, the fat lady was approaching the microphone before James Crean kick-started the away side's revival with a brilliant solo effort. Alan Falvey was introduced and made an immediate impact with a well taken goal before Genie Farrell registered his first score of the game with just thirteen minutes remaining. The visitors found their second wind and attacked the home defence at will and when Aidan Crean drove home their second goal we knew we were in for a grandstand finish. Sam Tarrant and the industrious David Keane kept Emmets in front before Crean and Falvey levelled matters with time almost up. As the clock struck 33 minutes Conor Cox fisted over what looked like the winner but there was to be a twist to the tale when Aidan Crean pointed a last gasp free to send the game to Extra time.
Full-time score: Emmets 0-17 Annascaul 2-11
Extra time
Two pointed fees from Cox and Crean cancelled each other out early in to the first period of extra time before Cormac Mulvihill put the hosts in front with an inspirational score on 5 minutes after a great run from Emmets stalwart Brendan Guiney. Three minutes later Conor Cox got on to a Noel Kennelly pass to raise the green flag and ultimately this was curtains for Annascaul. Cathal Ferriter and Aidan Crean added two points in the second period, either side of a Cox point but it wasn't enough as Listowel ran out worthy winners on a scoreline of 1-21 to 2-14.
Full-time: Emmets 1-21 Annascaul 2-14
