    Knocknagoshel 1-13 Tuosist 0-13

This was far from a dead rubber game, as Knocknagoshel sought to lift themselves from the base of Division 5 and Tuosist facing Castlegregory in the semi final of the junior championship next weekend. It was the visitors who opened the scoring with a point from Mike Tim O'Sullivan. Knocknagoshel replied with a point from John O'Keeffe.  Colm Brosnan swapped points with Niall Barrett, before Tuosist pulled ahead with three points on the run, two
coming from Aaron Morris and a Colm Brosnan free.  Niall Barrett pulled back a point from a free for Knocknagoshel, but Tousist had three further points before half time, two coming from Michael Healy and one from Colm Brosnan, to leave the half time score at Knocknagoshel 0-03 Tuosist 0-08.

In the second half, Mike Tim once again opened the scoring with a point before Knocknagoshel started to eat into Tuosist's lead.  Niall Barrett had two frees for fouls on David Cahill and he followed it with a good effort from play.  Mike Tim replied with two points of his own, before Knocknagoshel's centre back cut through the centre to slot over a nice point.  Substitute

Steven O'Connell tapped over a point with his left and Conor Sheehan struck over a long range point to narrow the gap to two for Knocknagoshel.  The same player won the resulting kick out and found the lively David Cahill in space.  He rounded his man well and tucked the ball neatly in the bottom corner, to give the home side the lead for the first time.  Two Niall Barrett frees and a point from play extended the lead to four, before Flor O'Sullivan pointed for Tuosist to help lift the siege.  Colm Brosnan reduced the deficit to two, before Niall Barrett pointed for Knocknagoshel to ensure a home win on a score of 1-13 to 0-13.

    Moyvane 1-7 Cromane 1-13

Con Brosnan Park was the venue for the final round of the County football league, where Moyvane faced Cromane.  Kerry star, Donnacha Walsh, was the first to get his name of the score sheet, kicking a glorious point from play.  This was quicky followed by a point
from Moyvane’s nifty corner forward, Colin Enright.  There wasn’t much between the two teams in the opening 20 minutes.  Sean O'Sullivan popped over a point from play, again followed by a point from Colin Enright.  A tussle between full back, Shane Stack, and full forward Sean O'Sullivan, saw both receive yellow cards.  Aidan Keane, the winner of a free, secured another score for the home team, but a goal for Cromane’s Shane Ahern saw them edge advantage going in at half time, with a score of 0-05 to Moyvane, 1-08 to Cromane.

Darren Houlihan scored the two opening scores of the second half, one from play, the other a 45.  A long high ball in from Moyvane’s Brian Stack saw the back of the net, which gave Moyvane a great boost.  They fought hard right to the bitter end, but again Donnacha Walsh proved hard to defeat and he scored a further two points, with Mikey Houlihan getting his name on the scoresheet also.  Final score was Moyvane 1-07 Cromane 1-13.

    Asdee 0-10 Cordal 3-18

Having gone through the League unbeaten, Cordal were crowned Credit Union County League Division 5 champions at Stack Park, Ballybunion, on Sunday last, where they defeated the home side in a one-sided contest that was played at 13 a-side.  From goalkeeper Sean O Ciarbhain to number 13 Kieran Griffin, this was a total team performance, with 13 players along with substitutes getting on the scoreboard.  However, the name of Philip O Connor deserves special mention, scorer of 2-04, all in the opening half, and was without doubt the man of the match, giving the Asdee rearguard plenty headaches.  Inside the opening minute, both teams exchanged points with Philip O Connor and Eoin Kennedy on target.  However, this was as
good as it got for the home side, with Cordal completely dominating proceedings for the remainder of the game. Goals from Philip O Connor,(3mts) and T J O Connor, 6mts later saw the visitors lead 2-05 to 0-03 after the first quarter, as two pointed frees from Eoin Tydings, who was easily Asdee’s best performer and Mike Breen was Asdee’s only reply. James Kelly, the Asdee keeper, kept out a goal-bound shot with a tremendous save, before Philip O Connor got his second goal in the 20th minute, followed by some well taken points.  At the break, it was Cordal 3-09 Asdee 0-05.

The same trend continued during the second half, as Cordal were to use up their bench but, in fairness, eventhough always playing second fiddle, Asdee battled away but it was the visitors who were piling on the scores.  Sean Walsh, who came on as a substitute, kicked 3 very good points as Kieran O Donoghue, Kieran Enright and Philip Griffin added further minors.  Eoin
Tydings got 3 back for Asdee, but it was never going to make any difference to the final scoreline:  Asdee 0-10 Cordal 3-18.

After the game County Board Developement Officer, Eamon Whelan was on hand to present the Cordal captain, Philip O Connor with the winning shield amid great jubilation amongst the huge band of supporters that travelled to cheer on the champions of 2017.

    Cordal v Cromane – Division 5 SFL 19/08/2017

Cordal took on Cromane in their second last game of the Division Five County League. Both teams were determined to win with Cordal looking to continue their unbeaten record and Cromane needing the win to become the third team promoted to Division Four. The game was a clash between two hardy teams and by the final whistle both sides were level. Cordal had 1-12 to Cromane’s 0-15.

The first half saw an impressive opening for the Cromane side who clocked up two points whilst kicking another wide. Cordal came onto the scene with a point in the fourth minute. Cromane seemed to hold their own in the first quarter scoring four more points before Cordal had another successful attack with a point from Philip O'Connor in the 15th minute. The second quarter wasn't Cordal's best performance by any stretch of the imagination, two scores were added by Kieran O'Donoghue and Sean Walsh keeping Cordal from falling completely behind.

Half time put Cromane on top with a six point lead at 0-10 to Cordal's 0-04.

The Cordal Seniors took a much needed morale boost from management at half time and had a fiery opening into the second half. Cordal's Philip O'Connor and Kieran O'Donoghue were first to unleash Cordal's scoring offensive, both adding valuable points in the first three minutes. Cromane's Finbar Casey knocked the ball over the bar before Cordal proved they had a drive in them when Kieran O'Donoghue scored a goal from a penalty in the sixth minute. Kieran seemed to be on top form after this scoring two consecutive points thereafter. Cordal’s Eamonn John O'Donoghue would put his team in the lead adding two points to the tally but Cromane were like rain to Irish weather, they just couldn't leave Cordal behind. The referee blew the whistle to leave two well matched teams with two level well matched scores. Cordal were 1-12 to Cromane's 0-15. Cordal could have beat the Cromane team but wides proved costly in the final minutes. Nonetheless a draw proved a victory of sorts for both sides.

The Cordal team remain unbeaten in this season's County League. Should the boys beat Asdee in their final Division Five game, they will leave as Champions, a fitting exit to Division Five as we get promoted to Division Four.

    Cromane 1-10, Rathmore B 1-12

Rathmore B blew the promotion race to Division 4 wide open when they beat Cromane in Cromane by two points on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors got off to a great start leading by 1-3 to no score after just six minutes, Rathmore’s goal coming courtesy of Michael Anthony Kelliher who was the first the pounce when a point effort rebounded off the post. This early blitz left Cromane with a difficult task and they could never get close to Rathmore during the first period.

Paul Patrick O’Sullivan kicked Cromane's first score in the ninth minute before a long ball into the square was finished to the net by Seán O’Sullivan. This brought Cromane to within three (1-1 to 1-4) after 15 minutes but Rathmore were able to keep them at arm’s length for the rest of the half. Rathmore even had the luxury of a missed penalty when Michael Anthony’s blazed wide.

Further points from their impressive centre-back TJ Friel, midfielder John Hickey and corner-forward Cormac Cronin (who ended the day with 0-7 to his name) ensured that Rathmore led by 1-9 to 1-4 at the break.

In the second half Cromane started much the better and pointed through Mikey Houlihan within 20 seconds. Cromane managed to restrict Rathmore to just three points in the second period as the home side dominated possession. However, some wasteful shooting and over-elaboration meant that they could never really hurt their opponents on the scoreboard.

With 15 minutes left Rathmore still held that five-point half-time lead, ahead by 1-11 to 1-6.

Cromane finished much the stronger, in part as Rathmore invited them on by playing some keep ball. Four late points from Darren Houlihan (two from 45s) brought Cromane to within two and despite seven minutes of injury time they could not find the goal that would have clinched an undeserving win.

Churchill ran out comfortable winners in their final league game of the year in near perfect conditions in Churchill on Saturday evening, thanks to an impressive second half display of football.

Churchill opened the scoring early in the first half with a well taken point from Michael O’Brien, followed quickly by an Ivan Parker free. Knocknagoshel replied with a free of their own from Niall Barrett and a fine score from distance from Barkley Rahilly. Parker and keeper Eoin O’Brien, with a 45, restored Churchill’s 2 point advantage. Barrett was picking up a lot of breaks for the visitors and added another point, but Churchill had the lion’s share of the possession and, after some wasteful shooting early on, began to work the scoreboard. Michael O’Brien added 4 more before the break and there were points too for Sean Donnellan and Ivan Parker. Knocknagoshel kept in touch with 2 more points from Rahilly and David Cahill and went in at the break trailing by 5 points, 0-10 to 0-05.

Churchill then scored 5 points without reply, including 2 from Pa McCarthy, but credit to Knocknagoshel they responded with a goal and a point, the goal coming from wing back Denis Roche, to again cut the margin to 5 points. However, after the goal Churchill began to dominate around the middle of the field through Matt Finnerty, Mitchel Holland and Sean Donnellan, and in a ten minute spell they scored 2-03 without reply to open up a 12 point lead an end the tie as a contest, with the goals coming from Michael O’Brien and JJ Prior. Pa McCarthy added a third goal for the hosts and points from O’Brien and Dara O’Shea near the end finished out the game with a scoreline of Churchill 3-21 ; Knocknagoshel 1-09.

During this half at a stage when Moyvane led by 7 points to 1 veteran Junior Murphy’s  goal for Valentia came after a skilful lay off to him by the Valentia full forward Steve Sheehan. However, Moyvane recovered and were leading by 11 points to 1-2 when Colin Enright had his goal for them. The game looked done and dusted as the aforementioned half time score of 1-11 to 1-4 came about.

Moyvane were leading by three points when a goal by Andy Quigley left the scores tied at 1-13 to 3-7. As the game reached the closing minutes Moyvane were leading by 1-17 to 3-10 when John Shanahan was put through by Anthony Sheehan to crash the ball to the net. Asdee 2-7 Churchill 1-14

In a pulsating encounter played at Walsh Park, Asdee, the visitors Churchill kept their hopes of promotion back on track with a hard earned win over Asdee, who in fact might rue the many scoring opportunities spurned especially in the first half, that may have given them
a win against all the odds.  However, Churchill who also squandered many scoring opportunities, but were able to get those vital scores when the fat was in the fire.  Asdee got off to a great start and by the 20th minute, points from John Doran, 3 and Michael Tydings had them deservidely ahead;  however Churchill hung in there and wing back J J Prior, who had a fantastic game, came up from his half back position to split the uprights a minute later.   Further points coming from Ivan Parker and Michael O Brien,(2) left the half time score four points all.

On resumption, it was Churchill who got the better start and after seven minutes went 1-6 to 0-5 ahead, points coming from Sean Dillon and Ivan Parker and a well taken goal from the very impressive Michael O’Brien, set up by Sean Dillon.  Michael Tydings was Asdee’s only reply with a point.  Churchill were now in the driving seat and it took a marvellous save by James Kelly in the Asdee’s goal to deprive Thomas Linnane of what looked a certain goal. Still, Asdee battled on and were rewarded at the end of the third quarter, when Keith McNamara sent a screamer to the roof of the Churchill net.  Sean Keane and Michael O Brien exchanged points, before Eoin Kennedy rounded the keeper to find the net and
level up the game at 2-7 for Asdee, Churchill 1-10.  Again, James Kelly came to his side’s rescue with a top drawer save a minute later.  Asdee did have a chance of going ahead with under seven minutes left for play, but an easy tap over free was off target.  This seemed to spur on Churchill and they added the match winning points from Eoghan O Brien, two 45s, Ivan Parker and centre back Cathal Rodgers.

    Ballylongford 2-8  Ballyduff 0-7

Ballylongford look set for promotion to Division 4 after they had seven points to spare over Ballyduff in the penultimate round of the County League.  The first half was a low key affair with both side guilty of some poor shooting, with Ballylongford amassing ten wides and at the changeover the sides were level at three points apiece.

The second half saw an improvement in the intensity and Jack Mulvihill opened the scoring with a point after a good run from midfield in the first minute.  Two minutes later, Ciaran O'Connor had the ball in the net from the penalty spot, after a foul on Tadhg McEllistrim, who had made another good run from his wing back position.  The game entered a period of inertia once again and it was the 13th minute before Ballyduff got on the scoreboard, with a point from Padraig Hussey and they could have closed the gap further when a powerful shot came off the crossbar two minutes later.  Ballylongford added their second goal in the 17th minute, when Sean Carmody made a good run from corner back and linked up with Jeremiah Tydings, who laid off to Ciaran O'Connor who made no mistake from close range.
Ballyduff responded with points from Michael Hussey, Sean Costello and team manager John Paul Leahy, to leave four points between the sides.  However, this was to be their last score, as Ballylongford went on to rattle off three quick points - Matt O'Connor who was excellent throughout set up Joe McCarthy for one of his two points, while Jason Deegan intercepted a pass and his goal-bound shot was tipped over the bar by Sean Brown,  bringing the game to a close.

Former Kerry stalwart, Seán O’Sullivan, opened the scoring for Cromane with a well-taken point after just nineteen seconds.  A Donagh McKivergan free in the seventh minute equalized matters and then, a minute later, the home side went ahead, when Danny Carroll latched on to a breaking ball to finish to the net from close in.  However, the visitors settled well and in the next 15 minutes had put over eight unanswered points, with Paul Patrick O’Sullivan and Mikey Houlihan unerring from play.  Stacks did have three late points to
leave the visitors ahead by 0-13 to 1-4 at half time.

A minute after the resumption, Stacks got through for their second goal, when Darren Bastible finished Danny Carroll’s cross to the net, but within a minute, Cromane’s corner forward, Lee Casey got his side’s only goal of the game.  Then the Mid Kerry boys went on   to score a further nine points to six for the Rock, to leave them with a comfortable nine points to spare at the end, so a very good game of open, attacking football with all but one
of Cromane’s 23 scores coming from play and nine of Stacks’ twelve scores coming from play.

Scorers:   Stacks:  Danny Carroll (1-2 – 2 frees), Donagh McKivergan (0-4 – one free), Darren Bastible (1-0), Michael Linnane (0-2), Cathal O’Reilly and Craig Corcoran (0-1 each).

Cromane:   Paul Patrick O’Sullivan (0-7), Mikey Houlihan (0-6), Lee Casey (1-1), Darren Houlihan (0-2 – one forty five), Seán O’Sullivan and Emmet Casey (0-2 each), Finbar Casey and Martin Sweeney (0-1 each).

    Cordal 1-13 Rathmore 0-13

Cordal took on the Rathmore B team on Sunday the 16th of July in Cordal's home grounds. Under blissful conditions, the Cordal team had a strong opening, clocking up three points in the first five minutes with one scored by Philip O'Connor and the other two by Brian Reidy. The first half continued with points to and fro between both teams.  It was Philip O'Connor's crucial goal on the 11th minute, that gave Cordal its edge against Rathmore for the duration of the half.   The final few minutes played out similarly to the opening of the first half. Cordal's Philip O'Connor, Brian Reidy and Kieran O'Donoghue each added points to Cordal's tally. Half time gave the Cordal side a six point lead at 1-07 to Rathmore’s 0-04.

The second half kicked off in reverse to the first, this time it was Rathmore that opened the half by clocking up three points.  These points were scored by Mark Reen and Dean Fitzgerald.  Kieran O'Donoghue got a point in for Cordal in the seventh minute, before Rathmore kicked in two more.  The fourth quarter saw Cordal back on form and they managed to maintain a three point lead, whilst preventing Rathmore from scoring a goal. Both sides missed major scoring opportunities, but by the final whistle Cordal had

maintained their lead and finished three points ahead with 1-13 to 0-13

    Cromane 0-6, Ballylongford 2-9

Cromane lost out to table-toppers Ballylongford in this hard-fought Division 5 clash on Sunday in Cromane.  This was Ballylongford’s tenth win in a row in the Division.  Apart from the opening quarter, Cromane never really got going. They led by 0-3 to 0-2 after ten minutes with two Paudie McCarthy points from play and a free converted by Darren Houlihan.   Then Ballylongford got a grip on the game and struck for two goals in the

space of ten minutes.  First, Kenneth Foley bundled the ball over the line before wing-forward Jack Mulvihill struck for their second five minutes before the break.   By half time, Cromane had only managed to add another point to their tally (a fine outside of the boot effort by Liam Teahan) as Ballylongford tacked on three more, courtesy of Ciaran O’Connor, Joe McCarthy, and Jack Mulvihill,  to lead by 2-5 to 0-4 at the break.

Again, Cromane started the better team, but they lacked directness in their play and ran down too many cul-de-sacs. They lost possession numerous times and Ballylongford punished them on the break.  Points from Cromane’s Darren Houlihan (free) and Mikey Houlihan, from play, cut the gap to two goals (2-6 to 0-6) five minutes into the second

half, but the home side failed to hit the target after that, as they went looking for goals     too early.  Ballylongford composed themselves and further points from Mulvihill and

O’Connor sealed a convincing win to extend their unbeaten run in Division 5.

A highlight of Ballylongford's afternoon was the commanding defending of Stevie Deenihan and Jack Carmody, the thunderous runs from young Tadhg McEllistrim off half back and the lovely interplay between Ciaran O’Connor and Jack Mulvihill in the forward line.

    Churchill 4-15 Kilgarvan 0-11.

Both teams came into this match just outside the top three and looking to keep touch with the leaders in search of a promotion place.  Churchill started brightly with a point from Dara

O’Shea and could have been in for early goals, but for some fine defending from Michael O’Sullivan and Keith Harrington. After ten minutes, Churchill led by three points to one, but Kilgarvan took control of the game for the next ten minutes and registered five unanswered points, including three from full forward Patrick O’Shea.  Churchill regained a grip at midfield through Matt Finnerty and Thomas Lenihan and scored five of their own on the trot, with four from Ivan Parker and another for O’Shea. Kieran O’Sullivan temporarily

stopped the rot for the visitors with a point, when a goal might have been on.  However, Churchill fired over three more points before the break, through Pa McCarthy, Parker and Michael O’Brien to give the hosts a four point lead at halftime (0-11) to (0-07).

Churchill really killed off the game from the restart with 2-02 without reply to lead by 12 points, 2-13 to 0-07, the goals coming from Michael O’Brien straight from the throw in, and the second from Dara O’Shea.  Pa McCarthy, playing at centre forward for Churchill, was covering every blade of grass and linking play between defence and attack, until he had to go off injured. Kilgarvan’s cause was not helped when O’Sullivan received a red card and Churchill’s Ivan Parker grabbed two more goals before the end, to ensure Churchill ran out winners by 4-15 to 0-11.

For Kilgarvan, Patrick O’Shea looked dangerous in attack and Shane O’Sullivan defended resolutely.  As the score line suggests, Churchill were dominant throughout the field and Matt Finnerty, Thomas Lenihan, Pa McCarthy and Michael O’Brien really excelled.  However, with 2-08 from play, Ivan Parker gets the nod for man of the match.

    Knocknagoshel 2-5  Asdee 2-12

Both teams badly needed the two points on offer in this County League game, played at Walsh Park, Knocknagoshel as they languish in the lower reaches of Division 5 and it was the visitors who took the spoils after an entertaining hour of football. Eoin Tydings got Asdee off the mark with a well taken point in the opening minutes and followed it with a point from a
free in the sixth minute.  Knocknagoshel opened their account with a point from corner forward John O'Keeffe, but Eoin Tydings replied with a free almost immediately.  After a mix-up in the Knocknagoshel defence, Michael Tydings was on hand to poke the ball past the Knocknagoshel keeper Mike Casey, to stretch his side's lead.  However, Knocknagoshel surged up the field from the kick out and John O'Keeffe got on the end of the move to rattle
the Asdee net.  Eoin Kennedy had two points from play for Asdee either side of a Killian O'Connor free for the home team.  Sean Keane and John Doran both pointed from play for the visitors, who looked to be pulling clear, before David Cahill turned his marker and rifled a shot to the net for Knocknagoshel, to leave the half time score at 2-2 to 1-7 in favour of
    Asdee.

Asdee got the perfect start to the second half and, despite playing against the breeze, reeled off four unanswered points.  It took until the 17th minute of the half before Knocknagoshel replied with an excellent point from Conor Sheehan.  Asdee had a pointed free from Eoin Tydings, shortly before Michael Breen got inside the Knocknagoshel cover to score his side's second goal.  David O'Donoghue pointed a free for Knocknagoshel and Killian O'Connor scored his second point of the evening, slotting over from the left hand side, but the gap was too much to make up and Asdee ran out winners on a final score of 2-12 to       2-5.

    Asdee 0-12 Kilgarvan 1-17

Kilgarvan made the long trip to Walsh Park on Saturday evening last, a winning one, where they proved too much to handle for the home side.  The Kenmare District were full value
for their victory, as especially in the second half they ran the home side ragged, putting together some brilliant movement on the ball, along with kicking excellent points.  Only for the brilliance of the Asdee custodian, Conor Coughlan, the margin of victory could very well have been much bigger.  On the other hand, after a well contested opening half, Asdee
were off target with their shooting and certainly their discipline left a lot to be desired, giving away handy free,s which the Kilgarvan attack duly obliged.  The opening half saw both teams really up for it and in an action packed first 30 minutes, when the sides were level on no fewer than five times, it was end to end.  John Doran and Mike Breen had Asdee ahead by two points without reply by the fourth minute and Flor O Donoghue, Kilgarvan keeper, came to his sides rescue with a fine save.  John Mark Foley, who dictated play throughout   at midfield, got his side’s opening score and, along with Patrick O’Shea who finished the game with 1-5, levelled up the tie for the first time after 12 minutes.  It was nip and tuck from here in and points were exchanged by Eoin Kennedy, Eoin Tydings, Mike Breen and John Doran for Asdee, while John Mark Foley, Shane O Sullivan, Gearoid Fennessy, Kieran O’Sullivan and Patrick O’Shea for the visitors.  At the break, the sides were locked together at eight points apiece.

However, whoever thought we were in for more of the same in the second half were well and truly off the mark, as the visitors just ran riot and, with the very first attack inside the
opening minute, it was Patrick O’Shea who found the net.  In fairness to the home side, they tried hard to stay in the game but a much slicker Kilgarvan side, who had the legs on their opponents for the duration of this half and kicked some excellent scores with; Patrick O’Shea, Sean Godfrey, John Mark Foley and Richard O’Sullivan, with Eoin Tydings, John Doran and Matthey O’Hanlon replying for Asdee.  This was an excellent display that is all good in football skills from a youthful Kilgarvan side, who had many stars on their side.   John Mark Foley ruled midfield, Patrick O Shea, Gearoid Fennessy and Sean Godfrey in attack, while in a well drilled defence Tommy Healy, Shane O Sullivan and Flor O’Sullivan. For Asdee, Conor Coughlan, Eoin Kennedy, Eoin Tydings, Kieran Kelly and Con Carmody did well on this occasion.

Teams:   Asdee; Conor Coughlan, Con Carmody, Eoin O Carroll, Brian Coughlan, Sean Keane, Martin Collins, Jack Keane, Eoin Tydings 0-3, Kieran Kelly, Mike Breen 0-2, Eoin Kennedy      0-3, Michael Walsh, Michael Tydings 0-1, John Doran 0-3, Denny Dalton. Subs, Kieth McNamara for Michael Walsh, inj, Matthew O Hanlon 0-1 for Dinny Dalton.

    Ballylongford 4-10 Valentia 1-10

Ballylongford maintained their push for promotion with a convincing win over Valentia played at O'Rahilly Park on Saturday evening last.  Played in perfect conditions, it was Valentia who went into an early lead with two quick points from Paul O'Connor.
Ciaran O'Connor with a pointed free got Ballylongford off the mark in the fourth minute and by the sixth minute, the same player had them a point in front and it was a lead they would keep until the final whistle, as they began to come on top of their opponents.

Thomas Doherty got the first of Ballylongford’s three first half goals, when he picked up a loose ball and drove a powerful shot to the top corner in the seventh minute.  Stephen Foley added goal number two with one of his many runs up field, when he launched a high ball into the goalmouth, which deceived goalkeeper, Fionan Falvey, and dropped into the net.
Ciaran O'Connor was on hand to tap in goal number three, after a good run by Jack Mulvihill in the 20th minute to put them nine points ahead.   Brendan O'Sullivan was moved to the verge of the square for Valentia and his presence paid off, when a breaking ball fell to Sean Shanahan which he toe poked to the net to reduce the deficit.  Paudie Moroney had to be at his best a minute later to keep out another goal bound shot from Paul O’Connor. Both sides swapped points to bring the half to a close.  Half time score:  Ballylongford 3-6  Valentia 1-7.

The pace of the second half dropped significantly, as did the scoring.  Ciaran O'Connor kicked over three pointed frees in the third quarter, with Anthony Sheehan replying with two for the visitors.  Paudie Moroney was the star player in the second half, with a string of
saves to deny Valentia, while Jack Mulvihill saw his efforts rewarded with a goal in the 26th minute, bringing the scoring to a close.

    Ballylongford 2-7 Rathmore B 0-12

Ballylongford got back to winning ways with a hard fought one point win over a fancied East Kerry side.  Played in near perfect conditions, with only a slight cross field breeze to

contend with, it was Ciaran O'Connor who got Ballylongford off to the perfect start with a goal in the first minute after a good attacking move.  The game ebbed and flowed for the next quarter, but it was Rathmore who were doing all the scoring and, by the 15th minute, they had gone two ahead with Denis McCarthy and Mark Reen providing the points.

Ballylongford had not raised a white flag at this stage and it was midfielder Joe McCarthy, playing outstanding football against much bigger opponents, who scored a pointed free in the 16th minute to narrow the gap.  The two McCarthys exchanged a further two points apiece to leave it level at half time.  Half Time Score:  Ballylongford 0-6 Rathmore B 0-6.

The second half began with Ciaran O;Connor fielding a high ball and kicking over a fine point, to put Ballylongford back in front, only to see it cancelled out two minutes later     with a Mark Reen pointed free.  The game continued at a frantic pace with quick restarts from both sides and matching each other point for point.  A goal at any stage would have

sealed it and Rathmore came close on a couple of occasions, but Paudie Moroney brought off some splendid saves and, at the twenty minute mark, the sides were level once again.

A goal was always going to be an important score in a close game and, in the 27th minute,   it came Ballylongford’s way, when Darren Murphy was fouled in the square and Ciaran O'Connor put away the resultant penalty to put them three ahead.  Rathmore were playing with 14 men for the final ten minutes, as Donnacha McCarthy was red carded for a striking offence, however they piled on the pressure and John O'Keefe and Denis McCarthy kicked over two points, but Ballylongford held out to record a fine victory.

    Cromane 1-9, Kilgarvan 0-10

Cromane had to dig deep to rescue a win against a fired-up Kilgarvan side in Cromane on Sunday afternoon.  Trailing by 0-6 to 0-9 with ten minutes left, the home side needed some inspiration to keep their promotion hopes alive.  It duly arrived, with midfielder Liam Walsh at the heart of it.  Firstly, Walsh curled over Cromane’s first point in over 30 minutes of football, to cut the gap to two.  He then proceeded to fetch the resultant kickout and set Sean O’Sullivan off on an amazing run, which ended in a swift pass across the goalmouth for Micheál Shaughnessy to fire to the net.  This put Cromane into a one-point lead (1-7 to 0-9) with seven minutes left.  It was helter-skelter from here on in, as both sides coughed up possession time and again.  Kilgarvan’s sheer will to get something from the game saw them level with a Connie Cremin point with two minutes left in normal time.  Impressive midfielder John Mark Foley then saw a point-blank range shot saved by Cromane goalkeeper Paudie McCarthy.  Cromane breathed a sigh of relief and responded with a length of the field move, setting up substitute Cian O’Keeffe for a point. However, there were still three minutes of injury time to be played and Kilgarvan had a chance to level proceedings, but Foley was wide from a 40 metre free.  Liam Walsh again won a vital kickout and another
fine inter-passing move led to Darren Houlihan cutting inside to kick the insurance score.
Cromane had started much the better and looked confident, as they stormed into a 0-4 to nil lead after eight minutes, with scores from Sean O’Sullivan (two fine efforts from play), a Darren Houlihan free, and another from play from Emmet Casey.  Kilgarvan slowly got a foothold in the game with Foley and Gearoid Fennessy at midfield giving their opponents plenty to think about.  By half-time, they had closed the gap to one with three Foley points (two frees) and one each from Connie Cremin and Jack O’Brien giving them a lift at the break, down 0-6 to 0-5.

They carried that form into the second half, as they kicked the next four points: two from play from the industrious Christopher Creedon and further efforts from Sean Godfrey and another Foley free.  In between these points, Cromane had chances and two efforts from Liam Walsh and Emmet Casey crashed off the Kilgarvan crossbar.  They weren’t adding any points though and this led to some over-elaboration at times.   Kilgarvan, too, had goal chances with Connie Cremin denied on the double in the Cromane goal with 15 minutes left.  With ten left, it was Kilgarvan who looked best placed to take the two points, but Walsh intervened and Shaughnessy’s goal was the key difference.

Paud Costello led by a point, with seven minutes left, in a quick break by Moyvane.  They were awarded a penalty, which was expertly converted by Aidan Keane.  They added three points to leave them ahead by five points at the final whistle:  Final score Moyvane 2-10 Ballyduff 0-11.

    Cordal 0-16 Knocknagoshal 0-5

Cordal played Knocknagoshal to claim their sixth win out of six in this year's Division Five County League.  The win was fitting as the Club unveiled the Tom Wrenn Memorial Stand with a plague in the memory of Tom Wrenn, Cordal GAA's former Chairman.  Cordal held   an eleven point lead upon the ref's final whistle with 0-16 to Knocknagoshal 0-05.

The first half kicked off with a Cordal point scored by T.J O'Connor.  This was followed by      a Knocknagoshal point scored by David O'Donoghue, before Cordal went on a scoring frenzy scoring eight points in a row.  The second quarter was more even with Knocknagoshal digging in their defence.  Both sides scored two points apiece.  Half time left Knocknagoshal down by nine points at 0-03 to Cordals 0-12.

The second half was more prosperous for Knocknagoshal - they heavily defended their goals and reduced Cordal’s successful points from twelve to four.  Knocknagoshal added two points to their own tally. A crucial moment came in the tenth minute, when Cordal goalie Sean Óg O'Ciardubháin saved a goal opportunity for Knocknagoshal.  Cordal only managed to add one final point in the fourth quarter, scored by Philip Griffin, due to Knocknagoshal’s

good defending.  Full time left Cordal on top at 0-16 to Knocknagoshal 0-05.

    Churchill 1-18 Rathmore “B” 1-9

In glorious sunshine, Churchill entertained Rathmore in Round 6 of the Co. League Division 5.  Rathmore  came into this game unbeaten in the league and looking to consolidate their push for promotion to Division 4.  Churchill started the brighter with three early points from Ivan Parker, Killian Fitzgerald and JJ Prior.  Michael Kelleher responded with a point for Rathmore, but Churchill took advantage of their early dominance to register the next 1-02, Fitzgerald with two more points and the goal from Ivan Parker, to give them a seven point lead mid-way through the half.  Mark Reen pointed for Rathmore and they almost got in

for a goal of their own, but Garret Walsh expertly blocked Cian Jenkins’ shot on goal. Rathmore were now starting to get some parity around mid-field and worked some nice scores, through Micheal Kelleher (3) and Denis McCarthy (2).  However, Churchill for their part, kept the scoreboard ticking over with scores from Michael O’Brien and Killian Fitzgerald and went in at the break ahead by 1-09 to 0-07.

Churchill’s influential Ivan Parker was substituted at half time through injury, but that didn’t stop their momentum, as they added the first four points of the second half, with three from Oisin O’Brien and a 45 from ‘keeper Eoghan O’Brien.  To Rathmore’s credit, they didn’t give up and got back into the game with 1-02 on the trot.  The goal came from the penalty

spot after Kelleher was pulled down in the area and he fired the resulting penalty into the bottom corner of the net.  Churchill were not to be denied though and they regained the advantage around the middle of the field and scored the last four points of the game, to run out winners by 1-18 to 1-09.*

Scorers:   Churchill: Ivan Parker 1-1, Killian Fitzgerald 0-6, Michael O’Brien 0-4,  Oisin O’Brien 0-3, Eoghan O’Brien, Sean Donnellan and Pa McCarthy 0-1 each.

Rathmore:  Michael Kelleher 1-4, Denis McCarthy 0-2, Michael O’Riordan, Mark Reen and Donnacha McCarthy 0-1 each.

    Cordal 5-18 Ballylongford 1-5

This top of the table clash never got off the ground, as the home side were much too sharp for an understrength visiting side, who had no answer to the power play of their opponents who dominated throughout and scoring at will. Brian Reidy hit 2-2 in the opening half
with further scores coming from Philip O’Connor 1-3, Philip Griffin 1-1, T J O Connor 0-3, with Ciaran O’Connor and Joe McCarthy on target for Ballylongford, leaving the half time score Cordal 4-9, Ballylongford 0-3.

On resumption, Ballylongford had an uphill battle with Padraig O’Neill giving them a little bit of a lifeline finding the net.  Ciaran O’Connor, Matt O’Connor and Jason Deegan added points, but Cordal answered with some fine scores of their own with Philip Griffin 0-4, Brian Reidy 1-3 (hat-trick hero), the goal from the penalty spot and T J O’Connor.  In fairness, Ballylongford didn’t have much luck in the scoring department, hitting the crossbar on a number of occasions as well as being guilty of poor shooting when it came to scores.

    Knocknagoshel 0-4   Moyvane 5-9

Knocknagoshel got another heavy defeat in this Division 5 clash, which took place at the earlier time of 5p.m. in Knocknagoshel on Saturday evening last.  Moyvane got off to the perfect start with a point from play in their first attack from their livewire corner forward Colin Enright.  Centre forward, Timmy Noonan, quickly added another point and followed it up with a goal inside the first five minutes of the game.  Playing with the aid of a lively breeze in the first half, Moyvane had a firm foothold in midfield, where Donal Leahy won the majority of kick outs in the air.  Knocknagoshel did get on the front foot on a number of occasions in the half, but were wasteful in possession near goal and missed some good chances, when presented with free kicks.  Meanwhile, Moyvane threatened with every
attack and had points from Eoin Stack, Martin Stack and Brian Stack, before Donal Leahy got on the end of a flowing move to rattle the net for their second goal.  They added two more goals through Brian Stack and Martin Stack to leave the half time score at 4-5 to 0-0 in favour of the visitors.

Knocknagoshel raised their game in the second half and, with the breeze to his back, Niall Barrett kicked a fine point from outside the 45metre line.  Conor Sheehan, who moved from full back to centre forward, added another point with his left leg, before Colin Enright struck for Moyvane’s fifth goal of the day.  Moyvane introduced their subs and Niall Mulvihill got his name on the board, when he tapped over, after cutting in from the left wing.  Aidan Keane added another from a free, before Niall Barrett kicked his second point of the half for the home team.  David O’Donoghue, who played well when moved to midfield for Knocknagoshel, kicked a fine long-range point after a solo run from inside his own half.  This was to be Knocknagoshel’s last score as Moyvane added a further two points from Colin
Enright and Martin Stack to leave the final score at 5-9 to 0-4 in favour of Moyvane. Knocknagoshel have had a tough run of results and face another difficult fixture away to Cordal next weekend. Injuries to key players haven't helped their cause and they are struggling to get scores on the board of late.

    Ballylongford 0-14 Tuosist 0-11

Ballylongford maintained their position at the top of Division 5 after a hard fought victory over Tuosist at O'Rahilly Park on Sunday.   Played in wet windy conditions, it was the visitors who hit the ground running and Dara Sugrue was unlucky to see his shot come off the post in the first minute of the game, after linking up with Flor O'Sullivan.  Ballylongford settled and buoyed with the aid of the wind.  Thomas Doherty opened the scoring with a fine point a minute later, and indeed the Ballylongford forwards went on to give an exhibition of long range point scoring, from Joe McCarthy, Liam McElligott and a massive point from Ciaran

O'Connor to leave them seven ahead at half time. Dara Sugrue got three pointed frees for Tuosist and was unlucky to see a second goal attempt come off the crossbar.                       Half Time Score:   Ballylongford 0-10, Tuosist 0-3.

Tuosist started brightly once again and, by the tenth minute, had the gap closed to two, with some equally good points from Dara Sugrue, Flor Sullivan and Thomas Harrington. Ciaran O'Connor did manage to pull one back for Ballylongford in the meantime.  At this stage, all money would be on Tuosist to run out easy winners, but they failed to raise a flag again until the 32nd minute.  This was mainly due to an increased effort by the Ballylongford defence, as James O'Connor and Darren Murphy were more influential in the full back line. While Matt O'Connor, Stephen Foley and Cian Barrett pushed forward at every opportunity. This in turn forced Tuosist back and they began to drop a few shots short and their wide tally also increased.   Matt O’Connor put Ballylongford further ahead after a good run from wing back position in the 14th minute and it was another fourteen minutes before Padraig O'Neill added another to put Ballylongford three ahead with time running out.  Tuosist needed scores and Peter O'Shea, who was excellent throughout, kicked over a fine point. Liam O'Shea and Ciaran O'Connor swapped points bringing an exciting encounter to a close.

    Referee:  Peter Curtin. Brosna.

Ballylongford Team:   Paudie Moroney, James O'Connor, Mike McEllistrim, Darren Murphy, Cian Barrett, Stephen Foley, Matt O'Connor 0-1, Joe McCarthy 0-4, Jack Mulvihill, PadraigO'Neill 0-1, Liam McElligott 0-2, Thomas Doherty 0-1, Seanie Kennelly, Michael Hollly, Ciaran O'Connor 0-5.   Subs:  Michael Lynch for Michael Holly, Jason Deegan for Ciaran O'Connor.

    Asdee 0-8 Moyvane 0-12.

Moyvane continued to hold the Indian sign over Asdee in recent competition and again on Saturday evening last in Round 5 of the Credit Union Co. League Division 5, that trend remained.  This was a good competitive encounter, once Asdee got moving after a rather poor opening twenty minutes and, in fairness, the four point winning margin by Moyvane was probably a fair result.  There were two Black Cards for Asdee: John Doran in injury time in the first half and Jack Keane with three minutes left for play, along with an injury to Paul O’Carroll at the end of the third quarter, as play was held up for a while, didn’t help the visitors cause.  Eoin Flaherty, Moyvane, received two yellows, getting his marching orders five minutes into the second half.

The game opened with the home team aided by a slight breeze and, for 24 minutes of this half, it looked as if Moyvane would just simply run away with the contest, as they controlled
matters in almost all areas of the field.  By the 21st minute they deservedly led by 0-8 to 0-1. Martin Stack listed at corner forward roamed outfield and kicked four excellent points, with one from a 45 metre free.  Colin Enright added three also from play, as Diarmuid Leahy and Joe Coulson held sway at midfield.  In fairness, Kieran Kelly did make a few runs, but each time the ball reached the Asdee attack, it was either blocked down or cleared to safety as the Moyvane rearguard were well up for the game.  However, the visitors although struggling finished the half in style and three points from Mike Breen (2) and Brian Coughlan gave them a lifeline.  In injury time, Paul O’ Carroll split the uprights to leave the half time score Moyvane 0-8, Asdee 0-5.

On resumption Asdee came out with all guns blazing and, after a number of wides, the deficit was cut to just two points when Mike Breen pointed after nine minutes.  Play swung from end to end as scores were hard to come by, with both defences on top.  Diarmuid Leahy and Colin Enright added points for Moyvane, while the impressive Sean Keane kicked  a fine point for the visitors as the margin was down to three points with four minutes remaining.  At this stage, with Asdee were coming more into attack, but when Moyvane won possession they played around to each other running down the clock.  However,
time allowed for Paul O’Carroll’s injury saw Moyvane kick further points, Colin Enright and Martin Stack, with Mike Breen finishing Asdee scoring.

Asdee: James Kelly, Con Carmody, Martin Collins, Conor Keane, Jack Keane, Sean Keane 0-1, Brian Coughlan 0-1, Kieran Kelly, John Doran, Mike Breen 0-4,(2f), Eoin Kennedy, Eoin Tydings 1f, Paul O Carroll 0-1, Michael Tydings, Michael Walsh.  Subs: Kieran McNamara for John Doran (bk), Matt O Hanlon for Jack Keane (bk), Conor Coughlan for Paul O’Carroll (inj.).

Moyvane:  Brendan Galvin, Michael Woods, Eoin O Flaherty, Jerry Clancy, John Finucane, Eoin Stack, D J Keane, Diarmuid Leahy 0-1, Joe Coulson, Shane Carmody, Timmy Noonan 0-1, Colin Enright 0-5, Martin Stack 0-5, (45 2f), Brian Stack, Aidan Keane. Sub: Niall Mulvihill for Shane Carmody.

    Ballyduff 0-11 Cordal 1-9.

Ballyduff senior footballers suffered defeat in Ballyduff on Saturday evening going down to Cordal by the narrowest of margins.   Cordal played with a strong breeze in the first half and led by three points at halftime.

Ballyduff came back strongly with the wind at their back and points from Mikey Boyle and Padraig Hussey made it a one point game.  In a rare attack, Cordal scored a goal. Ballyduff came back again and had what looked like a legitimate point waved wide by the referee, which would have drawn the game.   Final score Ballyduff 0-11 Cordal 1-9.

    Austin Stacks 2-8; Churchill 1-12

After a tight game all through, Churchill came away from Connolly Park on Saturday evening (10th June) with a one point win in this fifth round of the Co. League.  The sides were level on three points apiece at the end of the first quarter.  A 17th minute goal for Stacks by Theo Diggin gave the home side the lead for the first time in the game.  However, the visitors
battled back bit by bit and were back on level terms at half time (1-5 to 0-8) with some brilliant points by Cillian Fitzgerald, Liam O’Donnell and Michael O’Brien.

It was tit for tat also in the second half with a goal each for both sides, the number eight on both sides were the scorers – that veteran William Kirby for the Rock and Cillian Fitzgerald for Churchill. With twelve minutes remaining, the visitors were ahead by one point and despite some heroic efforts by both sides, those last twelve minutes yielded no more scores.

    Cromane 3-17, Valentia 1-10

The Cromane seniors produced a whirlwind start (leading by 2-4 to no score after ten minutes) to convincingly take the two Division 5 Co. League points in Cromane on Saturday afternoon.  After that start (and with the aid of a strong gale) Cromane always had their visitors ,Valentia, at arms’ length.  In truth, they never really looked in trouble over the hour.   Liam Walsh got the ball rolling with two early points, before his snapshot beat Anthony Sheehan in Valentia goals to put Cromane up 1-2 to no score after just four minutes.  Two Darren Houlihan placed balls, either side of a fine eighth minute goal from Sean O’Sullivan, left the home side ahead 2-4 to no score with 10 minutes gone.
Valentia (short a few regulars) battled back and points from Stephen Sheehan and Ger O’Shea seemed to have settled them, as they trailed 2-5 to 0-2 after 15 minutes.

However, Cromane had an excellent second quarter kicking 1-8 without reply. Their third goal of the half came from Mikey Houlihan in the 16th minute and then their forwards really started to gel.  Seán O’Sullivan rolled back the years to kick five excellent scores, while Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Finbar Casey, and Micheál Shaughnessy also split the posts with fine efforts.  A late first half free from Ger O’Shea left Cromane in cruise control, as they led by 3-13 to 0-3 at the break.

It was always going to take a Herculean effort from Valentia in the second half to get back into the game and they didn’t want for effort. Two quick Andy Quigley points (one a free) and a fine point from Ger O’Shea had them trailing by 3-14 to 0-6 with 20 minutes left.
Cromane steadied the ship and started playing some short passing, running football into the strong wind. This paid dividends with three points in a row from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Sean O’Sullivan (who kicked 1-6 from play overall), and a Darren Houlihan free (Cromane’s last score) to restore their 19-point lead.  The Cromane backs were touch-tight throughout and never really looked like conceding a goal, that is until Valentia were awarded a late penalty for a foul on full forward Stephen Sheehan. Sheehan, himself, dusted himself down
to nicely knock the spot kick into the net. This made it 3-17 to 1-7 and three further points from Quigley, O’Shea, and Paul O’Sullivan ended the scoring with Cromane comfortable winners at 3-17 to 1-10.

    Scorers - Cromane: S O’Sullivan 1-6, L Walsh 1-2, D Houlihan 0-4 (0-2f, 0-1 ‘45’), M Houlihan 1-0, PP O'Sullivan 0-3 (0-1 free), F Casey 0-1, M Shaughnessy 0-1.

    Churchill 0-13,   Ballylongford 0-14

Ballylongford travelled to Churchill looking to maintain their 100% record in the Co. League on Sunday afternoon, while the hosts were hoping to build on their recent good form,
which saw them record two wins on the bounce and put them right back into the promotion race.  In the end, Ballylongford ran out winners by a single point, but Churchill will be left to ponder what might have been, after some wayward shooting and ill-disciplined tackling cost them dearly in a game that they dominated for long periods.

Joe McCarthy opened the scoring for the visitors with a well struck free, but this was quickly cancelled out by Ivan Parker, after good build up play from Garret Walsh.  Ballylongford scored three of the next four points, all from placed balls, with two for Ciaran O’Connor and one more for McCarthy.  In between, Paul Lenihan added one to keep the hosts in touch, with Garret Walsh again playing provider. The game was being played at a frantic pace and both teams had goal chances within seconds of each other.  Firstly, Churchill’s Cathal Rodgers broke through the centre and his rasping shot was expertly saved by Paudie Moloney.  From the resulting clearance, Ballylongford broke straight up the field and worked a 2 v 1 situation, but Eoghan O’Brien got down well to deny Thomas Doherty with his legs.  Rodgers almost broke through on goal again soon after, but a fine tackle by Matt
O’Connor prevented the scoring opportunity.  Churchill added three more points before the break, the pick of them an effort from distance from Parker and two from Killian Fitzgerald, but Ballylongford registered another O’Connor free, just before halftime to leave the sides level at five points each.

*Fitzgerald put the hosts ahead on the restart, but O’Connor replied with two from play to put Ballylongford back in front.  Churchill introduced Peadar Stack and he equalised with his first touch, following a break out of defence by Mitchell Holland.  Cathal Rodgers added two in quick succession, the second one sweetly struck with the right, after selling a dummy with his left.  At this stage, Churchill were enjoying the lion’s share of possession, but a mounting wide count would ultimately cost them.  Joe McCarthy (2) and Ciaran O’Connor added three scores to take the lead, but a Parker free levelled the tie again.  Ballylongford started to break even around the middle of the park coming into the closing stages and the teams exchanged two points each, the pick of them a long range effort from Ballylongford’s
wing back Matt O’Conno,r that levelled the scores again at 12 points apiece.  In a game where neither team could open a significant lead on the other, the visitors opened a decisive two point lead approaching the final minute.  An O’Connor free was followed by a nice score from Liam McElligott, after he won a high ball into the box. Killian Fitzgerald tried to break through for the hosts in search of the goal that was needed, however he was pulled down 21 metres out. The resulting free was to be the last kick of the game, but
Fitzgerald blazed narrowly over with all the Ballylongford team between him and the goal.

In the end, Ballylongford maintain their unbeaten start to the season and are looking good to secure promotion back to Division 4.  Churchill will have to regroup and will look to get their season back on track, when they make the short journey to Austin Stacks next weekend.

Churchill:  Eoghan O’Brien, Alan McElliggott, Mitchell Holland, Des McCarthy, JJ Prior, Shane Crowley, Austin Clifford, Killian Fitzgerald (0-4 1free), Garret Walsh, Paul Lenihan (0-1), Cathal Rodgers (0-3), Sean Donnellan, Dara O’Shea, Pa McCarthy, Ivan Parker (0-4 1free). Subs:  Peadar Stack (0-1) for Donnellan, Tommy McCarthy for Walsh.

Ballylongford:   Paudie Moroney, Darren Murphy, Michael McEllistrim, Kenneth Tydings, Cian Barrett, Stephen Foley, Matt O’Connor (0-1), Jack Mulvihill, Joe McCarthy (0-4, 2 frees), Padraig O'Neill, Liam McElligott (0-1), Thomas Doherty, Sean Kennelly, Kenneth Foley, Ciaran O’Connor (0-8 5frees).

    Knocknagoshel 1-4 Austin Stacks 1-11

The home side went into this game with a depleted outfit and it was to prove too much to gain a result against an experienced Austin Stacks side.  Knocknagoshel did get off to the brighter start with a long ball into the penalty area, resulting in the award of a penalty, which David O'Donoghue duly dispatched to the net. Theo Diggins got the visitors off the mark with a well taken point in the fourth minute and this was followed by two points
from play from the lively Dale Counihan, to level matters by the twelfth minute.  John Dennis was handling a lot of ball in the middle third for Stacks and he converted a free in  the fourteenth minute, to put his side ahead for the first time.  Austin Stacks were starting to run at the Knocknagoshel defence and created an overlap, which resulted in a goal for
Andrew Moynihan in the fifteenth minute.  This was followed by a point from Dale Counihan and three consecutive points by the excellent John Dennis.  After a foul on John O'Keeffe, Niall Barrett lofted over a point from the resultant free to leave the half time score at 1-1 to 1-8 in favour of the visiting team.

With the wind to their backs, Knocknagoshel matched their opponents in the second half and had the opening score with a well taken point from David O'Donoghue.  Niall Walsh closed the gap to five points, with a point from the right hand side in the 41st minute.  Dale Counihan continued to be the fulcrum of the Stacks attack and he pointed in the 47th minute.  Knocknagoshel defended stoutly through Gary Downey, Denis Collins and Conor

Sheehan and were rewarded on the counter attack, when Conor Sheehan slotted over a well taken point from the left hand side.  Dale Counihan pointed a free, after a late tackle on Danny Carroll and Andrew Morrissey of Radio Kerry fame got his name on the scoresheet with the last kick of the game, to leave the final score at 1-11 to 1-4 in favour of Austin Stacks.  Knocknagoshel are likely to struggle for the next few matches, until some of their injured players and those doing their leaving cert return to action.  Meanwhile, Austin Stacks will take encouragement from the result and will be looking to build on the result over the coming week's matches.

    Asdee 0-11 Rathmore “B” 3-12.

Even though a ten point win might suggest that the East Kerrymen had it all their own way, but nothing could be further from the truth, as they had to battle hard against a dogged Asdee side before securing victory at Walsh Park on Saturday evening last.  However, on saying that, Rathmore were full value for their victory as their sheer strength and pace along with their goal-scoring power was always a problem for the home side, whereas Asdee were always struggling to put scores on the board and kicked a total of 12 wides over the hour. The game got off to a blistering start as play ebbed and flowed until the sixth minute when
John Hickey, the Rathmore midfielder, kicked a fine point.  Four minutes later, the impressive Paul O’Carroll had the sides level.  Then we had drama at both ends; firstly it took a super save by James Kelly in the home goals to deprive what looked like a certain Rathmore goal and not to be outdone, the Rathmore custodian Kenneth O Keeffe did likewise, but when the ball spilled, Mike Breen put his effort over.  Then in the 15th minute, a high delivery into the Asdee goalmouth, saw the ball go into the net off a defender.   Points were exchanged as the game changed from end to end and, in the 29th minute, only a point separated the sides, Rathmore 1-5 Asdee 0-7.  However, the pacy Rathmore men were always that little step ahead and, in the 30th minute, full forward John O’Keeffe struck for a well taken goal.  John Hickey closed the first half scoring at Rathmore 2-6 Asdee 0-7.

On the change over, the home side got stuck in and, after kicking two terrible wides, full back Martin Collins came up field to split the uprights, followed by another by Paul O’Carroll with four minutes gone, cutting the deficit down to just three points.  Then after seven minutes, corner forward Mark T Reen put the East Kerrymen back in the driving seat, when he nipped in for goal number three.  Kieran Kelly and Paul O’Carroll and substitute Denis McCarthy and Tadhg O Mahony exchanged points leaving it 3-8 to 0-11 after 24 minutes.
At this stage, Rathmore used up their bench as in fairness they were always a step ahead, as we approached the final minutes of the game.  Both substitutes, Denis McCarthy and Donal Moynihan, along with John O’Keeffe without reply closed the scoring, so after another victory Rathmore keep their promotion hopes very much alive.

Teams:  Asdee:   James Kelly, Con Carmody, Martin Collins 0-1, Brian Coughlan, Sean Keane, Michael Tydings, Conor Keane, John Doran, Kieran Kelly 0-2, Mike Breen 0-1, Eoin Kennedy,

    Cromane 1-12, Tuosist 0-14

Cromane and Tuosist played out an exciting game in Cromane on Saturday evening with the hosts squeaking through in the end by a point.  The game was played in glorious conditions and the visitors made a glorious start up 0-3 to 0-0 after ten minutes, the highlight being a fine effort from midfielder Peter O’Shea.  Cromane settled courtesy of a fortuitous goal that had its origins in a stray kick-out, which was finished to the net by impressive wing-forward

Darren Houlihan, giving Cromane a one-point lead 14 minutes in: 1-1 to 0-4.  It was a lead that they would never relinquish.   Tuosist managed to pull level four times. but could never get their noses in front.   Cromane ended the first half on top with fine points from Liam Walsh (2), Finbar Casey, and a lovely strike from Matt Colborne. Two frees from Mike Tim O’Sullivan and an injury-time effort from Marcus McNally left Cromane ahead 1-6 to 0-7 at the break.

Mikey Houlihan kicked a great point three minutes into the second half to give Cromane a three-point lead, but then Tuosist enjoyed their own, and Mike Tim O’Sullivan’s purple patch.  The Tuosist corner forward, who ended the day with 0-6 to his name, hit three points in as many minutes to level matters after 37 minutes: 1-7 to 0-10.  Tuosist had their chances, but couldn’t edge ahead.  Cromane countered again with Darren Houlihan and Paul Patrick O’Sullivan added two more points from placed balls. Tuosist weren’t easily shaken off, though, and another Mike Tim O’Sullivan point followed by a punched effort from Flór O’Sullivan had it all-square again: 1-9 to 0-12.  Cromane, to their credit, upped the ante again with Liam Walsh dominating at midfield.  Converted frees from Paul Patrick O’Sullivan and Darren Houlihan and a fine snapshot from substitute Cian O’Keeffe pushed them out

to another three-point lead with five left, 1-12 to 0-12.

It was all helter-skelter towards the end, as Tuosist pushed hard to get something out of the game, but they could only muster two points from play, courtesy of Flor O’Sullivan and Daragh Sugrue to end up one adrift of their hosts, 1-12 to 0-14.

Full forward John Paul Leahy used the wind to good effect when kicking over two long range frees in the eleventh and twelfth minute.

David O'Donoghue reduced the deficit for Knocknagoshel with a point from play in the twentieth minute. David Goulding was a constant threat for Ballyduff and kicked a sweet point from play in the twenty fifth minute. In the second half Knocknagoshel opened the scoring with Niall Barrett kicking a point from play. Thirteen minutes into the game Valentia corner back Ger Jack O'Sullivan made a vital clearance off the Valentia goal line. John Shanahan opened the scoring for Valentia four minutes into the second half with a point form play. Tuosist had wides from Colm Brosnan on the thirty seventh and thirty eighth minute before Flor O'Sullivan struck for Tuosist's second goal on thirty nine minutes. John Shanahan and Ger O'Shea added two further points for Valentia on forty and forty one minutes and two minutes later Paul O'Connor raised the green flag for the travelling side. A minute later, Andy Quigley converted a free to leave just three points between the sides, Tuosist's Liam O'Shea replied with a fine point from play on the forty sixth minute. Special mention to long serving Valentia supporter Mary O'Sullivan who made the long journey to Lauragh to support her beloved Young Islanders.

    Ballylongford 3-10

    Asdee 3-4

Ballylongford collected the points in this local derby with seven points to spare after an entertaining game played in brilliant sunshine at O'Rahilly Park Ballylongford.

In the early exchanges both defenses were on top and blotted out any attacks that came their way and when the opportunities did arrive they were squandered with some wayward shooting. Joe McCarthy eventually got Ballylongford off the mark and he had two on the board before Mike Breen got Asdee's opening score with a well taken goal in the 15th minute.

Ballylongford pushed up again looking to get back on terms and Darren Murphy found the net three minutes later to put Bally back in front. Cian Barrett and Seanie Kennelly added a point apiece while John Doran and substitute Kieran Kelly replied for Asdee. Eoin Kennedy was unlucky when his shot for goal came off the crossbar just before half time.

Half Time score: Ballylongford 1-4 Asdee 1-2

The third quarter belonged to Ballylongford as they raced into a twelve point lead, two early points from Ciaran O'Connor and Seanie Kennelly was quickly followed by goal from the penalty spot from Ciaran O'Connor after a leg block on Kenneth Foley. Padraig O'Neill and Ciaran O'Connor added a further two points before Kenneth Foley struck for goal number three as he was quickest to react to a ball coming off the crossbar in the 13th minute.

Asdee needed goals at this stage to get back in the game and Darragh Keane got one back after a great individual effort in the 22nd minute to add to Eoin Tydings earlier pointed free.

Ciaran O'Connor got a point for Ballylongford to steady the ship but this was quickly followed by a goal for Asdee from Michael Tydings in the 27th minute. Two more points were exchanged before Referee Ian Liston brought proceedings to a close.

Ballylongford: Paudie Moroney, James O'Connor, Michael McElistrim, Cian Barrett, Matt Connor, Steven Foley, Padraig O'Neill, Joe McCarthy, Jack Mulvihill, Mike Holly, Thomas Doherty,  Seanie Kennelly, Kenneth Foley, Ciaran O'Connor. Asdee 1-9 Ballyduff 0-5.

Ballyduff pitch was in perfect order, despite the recent atrocious weather conditions for the meeting of these two great North Kerry rivals in Round 1 of the Credit Union Co. Football League, Division 5, which also doubled up for a McCarthys Insurance Brokers League Division 2 tie.   In fairness to both sides who were very much understrength and this especially applied to the home team, but they served up a good honest encounter that
eventually say the visitors gain their first Co. League points.  In the opening half, Asdee played with the aid of a strong breeze but it disappeared completely after about ten minutes of the throw in.  Eoin Tydings inside 20 seconds and Paul O Carroll on six minutes
kicked early points, taking advantage of the wind.  John Paul Leahy and David Goulding put Ballyduff on the scoresheet, only for John Doran and Eoin Tydings to have Asdee ahead 0-4 to 0-2 after 14 minutes.  At this stage, both sides were guilty of some poor shooting as play swung from end to end.  However, Ballyduff were dealt a huge blow when Mike Breen struck for an opportunist goal in the 21st minute.  With time almost up, Evan Doyle cut the deficit with a good point and at half time it was Asdee 1-4 Ballyduff 0-3.

On resumption, play became very ragged with some poor passages of play and some of the passing left a lot to be desired.  However, in fairness, both teams were giving their all with both sides enjoying their fair share of possession, but when it mattered most Asdee were that little more clinical.  Even though Ballyduff could only muster two points in that second half coming in the 4th minute and 25th minute from Eddie Joy, (f), and David Goulding, they couldn’t be faulted for effort.  Points from Darragh Keane (3), Eoin Tydings (f) and Mike Breen killed off the game, but you can never write of Ballyduff, no matter who they have on duty and they had good performers in Evan Doyle, David Goulding, Sean Costello and to a lesser extent Eddie Joy.   For Asdee:  Martin Collins, Michael Tydings and Conor Keane excelled in defence; at midfield we struggled while in attack Eoin Tydings and Mike Breen
    shone.

Teams; Asdee:  James Kelly, Con Carmody, Martin Collins, Brian Coughlan, Conor Keane, Michael Tydings, Sean Keane, Darragh Keane, 2pts, John Doran, 2pts, Mike Breen, 1-1. Ballylongford 1-11 Kilgarvan 0-5
Ballylongford collected another two points in this Co. league game played at O'Rahilly Park Ballylongford on Sunday last.  In a rather dour first hal,f Ballylongford were three points to the good at the break with Padraig O'Neill getting their opening score in the second minute with Ciaran O'Connor (2), Joe McCarthy , Eoin O'Connor and Kenneth Foley providing the rest.  Kilgarvan after a slow start got more into the game with Padraig O'Shea and Connie Cremin getting on the scoreboard.  Half Time Score:  Ballylongford 0-6 Kilgarvan 0-3.

The second half was a more open affair with Eoin O'Connor for Ballylongford putting more daylight between the sides with a well taken goal midway through the half.  Kilgarvan only managed a point in the second half, but were unlucky when two goal attempts were kept out, firstly by a good save from Paudie Moroney and the crossbar coming to the rescue on the second occasion.

Cromane made it two wins in a row in Division 5, with a stirring second half fightback at home to Knocknagoshel on a windy Sunday afternoon.  The stiff breeze favoured the visitors in the first half and they were decamped in the Cromane half for the first quarter.  A feature of the half was the long-range kicking of Knocknagoshel midfielder, Michael Walsh, who kicked three excellent scores.  They led by 0-2 to no score after ten minutes and had stretched their lead to 0-5 to 0-2, courtesy of Walsh's third after 20 minutes.  Two Paul Patrick O'Sullivan frees hauled Cromane back to within one, 0-5 to 0-4, after 27 minutes. However, then the away side opened up their biggest lead of the game courtesy of a fine goal from Niall Barrett just before half time.  This pushed his side out to a 1-6 to 0-5 lead

    at the interval.

Cromane restarted well, using the breeze wisely, and kicked three points (Paul Patrick O'Sullivan (free), Micheál Shaughnessy, and Lee Carey) within three minutes of the restart to narrow the gap to one, 1-6 to 0-8.  Knocknagoshel's John O'Keeffe gave his side some respite kicking their only score of the half to push them two ahead, 1-7 to 0-8.  With the game in the balance, Cromane needed some inspiration: step forward Mikey Houlihan who kicked three points in five minutes, including two mighty lofted efforts from 40m out to put Cromane ahead, 0-11 to 1-7 with ten minutes left.  Cromane finished strong and points from Paul Patrick O'Sullivan (two) and Finbar Casey sealed a four-point win.

On a misty day, this game played at O’Connor Park in Valentia resulted in the Islanders winning their first Co. League game since their first round win over Moyvane last year in Div. 4.   It brought its own sense of euphoria.  The half time score stood at 2-7 to 0-6.
Valentia’s scores came from Jim Lynch(1point), Steve Sheehan (1 goal), Paul O’Connor         (1-2), Andy Quigley(0-3,1 a free), John Shanahan(0-1).  Churchill scorers:  Ivan Parker(0-4,     3 from frees). Pa. McCarthy (0-1).

The second half saw the visitors off to a stronger start and copper fastened it with five points without reply. The points came from Cathal Rogers, Ivan Parker, Cillian Fitzgerald and Micheál O’Brien(2 frees).  However, the Young Islanders dusted themselves down with a vital recovery and a breathing space point from Junior Murphy, to be added to by a very well taken point by Ger ’The Plumber’ O’Shea.  Valentia’s Andy Quigley was fouled, resulting in a penalty, which he expertly dispatched to the net.  The score now stood at 3-10 to 0-13 in Valentia’s favour and then Valentia’s John Shanahan scored 1-2 to give a final result of     4-12 to 0-13 to the home side.   The Young Islanders, very much struggling for numbers these days will be happy with a gallant performance and a badly needed win.
